this is a suite made up of single or double rooms. sometimes suites have kitchens, but other times there's a shared kitchen for the building or floor, etc.

Does the shared space have a lock? i.e. can other people from the rest of the building just walk into that space, or can you keep it private to you and your room mate?

yes! the common room is reserved exclusively to the students residing in that suite as there is a main door separating it from the hallway. hope that answers your question!
