If the fish that evolved into humans crawled onto land, another one could have crawled into subterranean caves full of lichen, heat, etc - And anything 14k feet below the surface would have avoided most (maybe all) of the extinction events that have reset life on the surface, giving them far more time to develop. We wouldn't see much of them for the same reason we don't spend much time in the Mariana Trench.
