That's how I used to operate the can of worms for years. I now put wood shavings in the liquid collect area and use these wood shavings as bedding when starting a new tier . The worms that find themselves in the wood shavings are happy enough and I have never had any problems. The worms start to produce castings in the shavings and it's nice and moist to use in the next tier

New here. I have been raising worms for a couple years now. Where I garden using the Back To Eden method, raising rabbits and using their manure and using the worm castings, my soil is amazing. Thanks for sharing. Many blessings.

I use a old fridge which I start with in the spring using half finished mulch and worms that I collect over time. I also add kitchen waste which they love. I sift the castings out a couple times in the season and when the cold weather comes I let the worms go back into the ground.

Lovely video ,harvesting is fun , sometimes the casting area has eggs in there , you can start another small worm farm when the little eggs hatch . I use buckets and now have 7 started worm farms from when I harvest , each time I creat another worm farm with eggs and castings , easy peazy , 👍

i have a bin that i have on my back porch. i have it filled with worms and compost! i always get mold so i have the worms breaking it down to use as soil! i like to mix potting mix in whenever i get some of it depending on what is in it

Great tutorial! Thank you! I have a couple of questions: 1) How long does it usually take for the casting tray (bottom) to be full? 2) Does it attract a lot of mice and roaches? 3) how often do you “feed” the top bin with your food scraps? 4)are there some types of food that the worms don’t like? I’ve heard no onions or citrus, is that right? Any or all questions answered will be so appreciated! Thanks!

@@aliyagalim 1 depends on how good your ecosystem is and how many worms there are and what species you use 2 are roaches really a problem outside??? mice yeah but you can be smart and keep em out or trap em 3 depends on how large your population is, the more worms the more they eat-logical no? don't forget to make sure it's an aerobic party in there, use brown material for euhm ventilation, i do about 50/50 green kitchen stuff/brown dry leaves small dry branches dry grass etc.. (avoid layering like leaves or grass, mix it up a bit, gently) 4 it's said to much koffie grinds is a bit to acidic but i doubt a pot a day would be bad.. no meat no butter etc!! onion scraps are ok, citrus maybe cut it up in a few pieces and don't throw in to much.. i noticed they like anything as long as it's varied enough, nuts shells (walnut) they like to use as a place for orgies and laying eggs or do they give live birth?? :p haha

Hey thank you!! ❤️ Ok, i am back with some more info. Worms indeed don't like onions, because of smell. What i found. So you can put them out under direct sun, to dry and get 'burn'. Such opinions are better. Another thing about egg shells, they can't get calcium directly from shells, but if you burn them in a fire wood pit, they turn to ashes that is better for integration + the ashes of wood is also good. Live and learn 😍😂🚽

@@aliyagalim did you know you can multiply the good aerobic bacteria by a few million in just a day? the worm compost which is full cycle, black soft and not to moist, without any leftovers or decomposing material or worms, sift it through medium sieve, put about 2-3 hands full in a sock in a bucket of water, suspend it above an aquarium air pump which is at the bottom, ad a few teaspoons (not to much!! stick to the recipe) of molasses from sugar cane is the best, it's the by product of sugar production and it's the food for the process as it's the elements the organisms need to multiply.. the idea is to let the pump aerate through the sock and the compost.. compost-tea can be used to boost the immune system of plants by spraying it on the whole plants.. don't over do it, a few times per growing season is fine.. some people do the nettle soup for nitrogen but i wouldn't recommend this as it's an anaerobic process=not good for the soil quality and the mycelium (mushrooms).. 🙏🌱🍄😎

The bottom layer you can just hose it out to get all the castings out and use the liquid as you've shown.

Hi Cathi! Ah yes, I absolutely love the worm farm ☺️ Had it for a few years and it’s going strong! We have been getting a lot of wind yes! It’s a really windy time of the year. Will probably start getting the spring storms here soon. Hope it calms down 😔

yes, they should be. just try and keep them in a shady area until its time to get the castings, then leave them in the sun for about 10 minutes first.

Hi Wendy. I like to keep the tap open to allow a little more air in and let the system naturally empty when needed. This is usually because sometimes I can't get to it for a few days if I'm busy. But if you're emptying it every day or so, then it should be fine to keep it closed. Just don't want to make sure it goes anaerobic :)

Thank you! I do put a little citrus in the worm farms occasionally and seems to break down fine. At the end of the video in the 'in ground' pots I was adding some bush lemons that weren't good to eat which also break down well :) Thanks for watching!

Washing it away is a real waste. All of that is awesome for the garden. And the liquid can be diluted and used as a spray for leaf feeding. Castings also boosted the plants ability to ward of pest and disease. And it doesn't hurt the watershed. Its time released and wont burn your plants either.

There is an easier way to harvest. If you drill holes at bottom of bin and place it on top of bin ready to harvest, worms will move to this bin prepared with bedding and food
