Thanks for the shout out Patrick. I started a worm bin from my compost as well, and showed it off at an outdoor festival. Started with 30 composting worms in a 5 gallon bucket and counted them about a year later and there was over 600 worms. Both bins are looking good. 😁🪱

Hey Patrick and Autumn. If y'all are feeling a bit too empty nest-y, consider making a video (or playlist 😅) with K4 to elementary school-aged kids in mind. A few friends and fellow church members and I were talking about what we'd be gardening this spring. I mentioned I had castings because of my worm tower within earshot of 3-6 year old boy's. And suddenly, the Tonka trucks weren't important anymore. I forgot to S-P-E-L-L around them 😂

😂🤣😂 That is hilarious!! We raised three boys and we learned early on to check their pockets when they came inside...no telling what living creatures we would find in there!! I filmed a video with two of my nieces and it was pure chaos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3jPd2yIjJJ9i7c I love viewing the world through the eyes of children!! I learned from the best!! I was super surprised to only have 6 worms in that section! I haven't had a camera go out on me yet...but it was total user error...the footage showed it was me and not the Executive Producer that turned it off😂🤣😂Although that was not my first thought when it happened...it was a little bit of a case of shoot the messenger when she told me it was not on!! Thanks so much for watching AV!!🪱🪱🪱

Well I learned from you ❤😊 Last night I added a paper & cardboard mix and little worm chow to my catch tote under my worm bin tote. To many worm to retrieve and a few smaller that I just could not reach. So after watch how you rotate & filler the lower bins with paper in preparation of becoming the next bin well hopefully this will allow them to return to main tote 🙏 thanks for 💡 😊

Count those worms! 😂 I wonder if the number goes down as the worms get bigger. Those are some big red wigglers! You have me thinking of restarting a small bin just to see how big they can grow. I notice bigger ones in our leaf composting which is interesting. The ones in our worm compost bins stay a bit small.
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 20 күн бұрын
😂🤣😂I'll be honest, after seeing those beautiful worms I kinda did want to count them!! It would be interesting to experiment with what makes compost worms chunky or skinny??!? I know the food has a lot to do with it, but I think moisture levels, feeding intervals etc. probably all factor in. I bet your leaf compost makes great worm castings when they eat it!! Thanks so much for stopping by Ann!!🪱🪱🪱

My worms eventually munch through the pine needles, Patrick. According to worm science research, pine needles make a really good bedding material for worm growth and reproduction. I know they take longer to turn into castings, but the worms like them! ~ Sandra
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 20 күн бұрын
Thanks for looking that up Sandra!! What the researchers hadn't factored in was my lack of patience and the awkward nature of the needles being manipulated and lifted in this very small diameter worm bin😂🤣😂 I ended up dumping that stuff in my regular compost so not all is lost! I have a bunch of blueberry bushes and we usually rake up the pine needles and mulch the blueberry bushes with the needles...but my lawn mower picks them up as well and that is the majority of my compost pile. I will try to be more patient in my worm bins with pine needles in the future!! Thanks so much for watching & for all your support!!🪱🪱🪱

@ it’s been cold this week (and snowy) but the heating pad is keeping the worms warm enough to be active and happy - we checked tonight and it was around 74 at the bottom of the tray right under the heating pad. The compostable vegetable bag that we got from the grocery store is breaking down from the moisture within the bin but doesn’t have any appeal for the worms. Our other experiment was half an avocado with the flesh in it, and they have been enjoying that since mid December. And a whole banana that I let get a little too brown - that was their entire food for 2 weeks - and they went through that pretty quickly. We have been running the top tray of the tower for about 4 months now and should be rotating our trays in a few weeks - we really want them to clean out some more cardboard shreds - but I don’t think we will be doing a worm count.
@Vermicompost

That's fantastic the heating pad is working so well!! That is interesting the worms don't care for the bag, I was hoping they would. That's excellent you'll be doing a rotation soon!! Every rotation after the first one should go like clockwork every 60 days. In my latest video I gave my VermiHut it's last feeding before rotation but I think I added way too much shredded cardboard...I usually like to skip cardboard or at least go with less for the last feedings before rotation...I just had bulking up the tray on my mind!!

Wow that's fantastic that you're little worm bin was free from the workshop! I'm going to check out workshops near me for sure! My 5 gallon worm bucket experiment went so well that I just picked up a 32 gallon garbage can so I could expand. :) So now I have 2 large tote worm bins, 1 five gallon worm bucket, and the early stages of the 32 gallon trash can.... I think I might be addicted to vermicomposting! 😂😂😂

Definitely look into a vermicomposting workshop...you could probably teach it but hey, free worms and a new free worm bin!! They don't have the workshop every month but they have it several times a year in my county!! A 32 gallon garbage can worm bin would be epic!! I need Autumn to get on board with that!! As an non-recovering worm bin addict I can certify that you are indeed addicted...and that is perfectly OK!!!😂🤣😂 Thanks so much for stopping by to watch Lisa!!🪱🪱🪱

The mites are good right? Keep reading conflicting information, but I am hoping the info that "they are helpers" is the correct info
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 19 күн бұрын
Mites in a worm bin are a good thing...99.9% of the time!! They help to shred and break down the food for the microbes and worms. Mites also help take care of dead worms and recycle them back into the ecosystem of the bin. All my bins have mites in them. There are types of mites that kill worms but you do not have them and neither do other worm farmers. The 0.01% where mites might not be a good thing is if you see a huge rapid increase in them. This can mean a swing in pH or moisture that is detrimental to the worms and is almost always caused by over feeding. So a rapidly increasing mite population is the canary in the coal mine of worm farming. The remedy is to feed less and add more bedding. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching Sarah!!🪱🪱🪱

I am continually amazed at how productive your traveling worm bin is. The castings from my bins weigh around 6.5 pounds/gal, so you got about 3/4 gal from that tiny little bin, YAY. Don't worry too much about jumping worms in your Chinese bucket bin, they get significantly larger than any other worm, here is a link to a video I shot a few years ago, quality sucks but there is some value to, it kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4CtgqxrhJ10pJYsi=1Cus-UH-Bs24ty3Q One other thing I have learned about the JW's, some cocoons may not hatch out for several years, just do not use those castings in any plants you may give away. Excellent videos like this shows, anyone can raise worms. Stay Well my friend!!!!

1:04 But we thank you for the Timelapse of it all. That one just cruised around the bowl like an Indy car🙏😂. 3:59 have you found that the smaller the bin the easier it is to get gross faster? With aquariums, typically the larger it is the easier it is to control water parameters. I’ve never done a micro bin like these. 7:50 FATTIES 🪱🪱🪱😂. Good stuff as always guys. 🤿🤙

I'm so glad you enjoy the time lapses!! You can really see their movements when it's sped up!! I find worm bins to be a lot like fish aquariums...salt water aquariums in particular (we have a 35 gallon fresh and a 40 gallon breeder and 29 Gallon Bio cube saltwater tanks) The smaller the bin, the quicker parameters can get out of wack. This bin really cycled with mites and pot worms for the first year or so...now the eco system is very balanced and nothing is dominate except the worms! I've also noticed the worms getting chunkier!! Thanks so much for all your support Mike!!🪱🪱🪱
