Harvesting Peat in Ireland

S G Curry Ltd harvesting peat in Co. Westmeath Ireland. Peat was harvested using a fleet of New Holland and Fendt tractors and a Liebherr bulldozer during June 2018.

Great wetland habitat is recreated when the all peat is harvested and the land re-floods, just look at the surrounding bog land. Provided they don't take every last drop, the land is re-flooded and the moss is allowed to regrow those bogs will be cut again in a few generations. It is sustainable if not over done. Peat is one of the best horticultural compost makers and soil conditioners for healthy vegetables, they also make compressed peat plant pots that avoids the use of plastic. It is also a fuel of course. It can be destructively distilled, the gas used to run power plants and the carbonized remains used in active charcoal filters and the like. Or as charcoal used to cook or make steel. The Irish have a good future income if they look after these peat beds, instead of permanently draining them and turning them into fields. Nice to see in my opinion.

Rusty Nailer Yes of course its possible. But the problem is still the high amount of time it takes. You see farming land is worth a lot of money and you could generate a lot if money during the incredible long time it takes to form peat (peat takes around one year to get 1mm thicker)...thats 100 years for 10cm peat 100 years of farming income vs a 10cm layer of peat Or you could grow a forest which also generates more money Its better to harvest the peat and then use the land for other things...

You are right of course. Hopefully remaining peat bogs will be protected from this, over harvest. The political will to sustainably harvest the sea, forests and bogs is there, just business greed and stupidity to drive back or dissuade. Not all business is greedy or stupid in fact quite the opposite I must say. Ideally the politicians should go for the Elephant in the sustainable room, global over population of us humans. We need to slow down, all of us. Then, maybe we can be truly sustainable, like the stone age people we will become again if we don't...

Around 12 metres, or 36 feet. Peat is transported in trains or buskers to a factory where it is pressed into brick-like briquettes.

They stopped cuttign bricks about 50 years ago. this is milled peat most likely for gardening products, as Bord na mona mine the energy peat and they dont have Fendts.

This could be for gardening products, Mark, but the Bord still actively produces briquettes. You are correct, the Bord does not use Fendts, but S.G Curry is a private enterprise based in Coole, so the peat could be for use in any number of products.

Lois Gustafson ithere is two different beds of peat one the most coming is called a raised bed it can be 4-12 meters deep. This would be very sustainable because you get more peat without destroying a hole bog land !!

I don't understand what's going on here. Is this peat that green house's would use for growing plants? Also, if you drain the water, won't the organic matter start decomposing? What happens when the peat is all gone, then what? Why not just farm it?, longer use of the land wouldn't it?

Basically it can be used to grow plants and be used in power plants to produce electricity about 40% of Ireland's energy. Draining it to make it start decomposing is done on purpose so it can be burned and used for plants. This is an example of something called a blanket bog it goes down about 1.2 metres and once they reached a certain point they are forced to stop cutting by law and let it replenish over thousands of years. ( look up how bog lands are formed for further understanding ). The land once cut can and is now starting to be the home of new forests with native Irish trees being planted. Because the companies operating on the land have to stop cutting the land and let it replenish. They have to allow the land to become moist again by filling in the ditches resulting in the land becoming very very soft and too easy it sink in, and the grass quality isn't all that great so most reframe from using it for farming. As you see in the video although the land is dry they still need the duals on the tractor to prevent a possibility of sinking to be mostly eliminated. Once wet you can see if you look up pictures and videos tractors just sink. From where I know they do do farming on the land but mainly used for livestock and when cutting for silage it completely destroys the ground. Like cutting maize almost. Yes the government have stopped a number of people cutting turf from there plots. They usually use the excuse of habitat protection. However, an all out ban has not taken place yet as it would be to controversial when the vast majority of our electricity comes from peat production. When the government eventually find a realistic replacement and companies like bnm are stopped then us turf cutters will have our shit

@@joetyrrell3091 thats the funnyest explanation i have seen in a while. hehe. peat is mainly plants-trees-animals that have laid in a svamp a long time.. and becouse of little-no oxygen they dont roth and turn in to PEAT.. its simular to what happend when you make SILAGE OUT OF HAY IN A CLOSED BUNKER-SILO IF you left the silage closed say 100+ years, instead of feeding it to animals first year, it also would turn in to peat.

PEAT is mostly dead plants-trees and animals-fish deposited in a watery swamp area over thousands of years,, and becouse of little to no oxygen it turn in to peat.. instad of rotten to useless dirt. if it had continued to lay there thousands more years and cowerd with other materials it would turn further in to brown COAL ORE black coal depending on the mixture.. harvested as PEAT it can be dryed and used as fuel for ovens ore transport it to another farm where you need more TOP SOIL IN YOUR FIELDS. Peat is like consentrated compost..
