He was always world class and still is. His so called ‘toxicity’ was down to the fact he knew he was in his prime and he was racing with pretty poor cars. He’s got the best out of the car pretty much every season he’s raced. I hope Alpine make a car in 2022 worthy of his talents

All this talk of toxicity...just see how much Lewis moans whenever he has a bad car/bad weekend when in truth such weekends have been very rare for mercedes. Now imagine having to put up a season/seasons like that and Alonso had several such ones. Even in 2012, he dragged a car that had no right to be in title mix on outright pace with a chance to win the championship. Frustration of some kind is only understandable here.

Why is everyone surprised with Alonso's recent form? The guy is a racing genius. Granted he parted ways with F1 but he was not sitting at home idle. He was participating in other races and the great man is a World Endurance Champion and holds two-thirds of both triple crowns of racing. If he has the car that performs like Mercedes, Red Bull or maybe even the third best car, he can win World Championships any given year.

He's an absolute old driver. Next week he'll be 40. Do you know how many drivers have been champions in F1 in the last 50 seasons aged 40 or above? None. Do you know how many drivers have even won a race in the 40's. Only one. Nigel Mansell in Australia 1994. Nobody else. Do you know how many F1 drivers in their 40's even finished on the podium in their 40's these last 50 seasons? Only five. Let's just say that the statistics the last 50 seasons in F1 are going to be awfully hard to disprove. They just speak very clear. At any rate they're way more valid than the highly subjective opinion of the fans. I wouldn't say they're driven by a rational assessment. "Just imagine him in car that matches the performance of frontrunners.." He'd be sitting in a top car if he was as good as his fans claim he is. Schumacher made a comeback in his 40's and only managed a single podium finish in three seasons. His team mate Nico Rosberg beat him all three seasons and even won a race (China 2012). If Schumacher couldn't beat his age - in a team which was built around him as they signed him for top money - what makes you think Alonso can do it?

Fernando's 2 year career outside of F1 was way more impressive than most top tier professional drivers outside of F1 have achieved. I don't think he's toxic at all. Absolutely. At leMans, Alonso's superb night driving whittled down the gap built from a previous penalty that Buemi incurred. His stunning win at Daytona was just amazing and in terrible weather too. He was a cut above the field with drivers much more experienced than him at endurance racing but Alonso put on a masterclass. Equally amazing was his 13th overall result at Dakar in his first go. Dakar is 12 grueling days of rally and Alonso not only survived what could have been a rally-ending accident that also ended the rallies of other drivers (his car rolled off a massive dune) but at one point he beat the winner Carlos Sainz Sr. in one stage.

Alonso did indeed threaten Ron Dennis with going to the FIA if the team kept pushing against him (this was after all the Hungary mess). So you are right in that sense. In my book, all the protagonists of the 2007 season in McLaren behaved like absolute assholes: Alonso, Hamilton, and Dennis (and other secondary characters too, like Pedro de la Rosa, BTW). With Kimi, I think it's interesting because looking at his career it almost seems like he stopped really trying after he won his title, with the exception of his short stint at Lotus. Of course, F1 regulations and the changes in cars have definitely gone against his driving style as well but I don't think that accounts for everything. Alonso though, he has been able to adapt and overcome the changes and his only real trouble has always been his lack of a real winning car. I would argue that he's only had three seasons in his entire career where he had a car capable of winning the title, those being 2005, 2006 and 2007, two of which he won and one of which was admittedly his worst season for a variety of reasons (and even so he only missed it by a point).

One of the problem he has this year is his pace on his first stint. It is hard for him to manage his tires, so, from lap 4 to his pit, he has a bad race pace, idk if it's him or the Alpine, but, just after that, his pace starts to improve and at the end he is a monster. I remember some races such as Portimao were he was 10s behind Ocon with 10 laps left and he ended less than 1s from Ocon

It's Alpine, have you seen his racing line and how good he is on exiting corners compared to the competition, his qualifying needs more work but I'm guessing it might be BC he still has to learn or relearn some tracks and also probably with the newer cars there might be some places that you can get better grip with in qualifying that Alonso doesn't know about And honestly I find his tire performance very random

Despite his age he has proven to have great consistency and ability to maintain his speed throughout his career and in the right car he can easily challenge Max and Lewis and for evidence, just look at 2012 in that dog of a Ferrari

Alonso was the one of the few drivers who challenged the current world champion of his time. He has been both challenger and defender. He would love to win a third title then retire. His helmet trades with the younger drivers is trademark Alonso. He is probably the only F1 driver who put up a kart school to train the next generation F1 drivers. That is already a legacy no other driver on the grid could lay claim to. He is a fierce competitor yet races clean and fair that he does not have any penalty points on his super license. The young drivers could still learn a trick or two from him when it comes to race starts. It is still entertaining to watch him mix it up with the young ones.

@@ammarshaare1253 F1 are bringing ground effect back as well, that doesnt mean that its equaly unsafe as in the 80s, because f1 has become a lot safer in general. Im sure the rulemakers can come up with some rules to prevent the verstappen thing happening again. Besides, the benneton F1 team were subject to an investigation by the FIA after that crash, and it turned out that the refueling rig had 'misteriously' lost its filter(the filter slowed down refueling times) and this was deemed the cause of the incident. F1 teams have become a lot more professional and put a much greater focus on safety over performance now, and i doubt any team today would be shameless enough to cheat like that. I think bringing back refueling will make F1 a lot more fun as it will widen the strategy options and the cars can become lighter, smaller, and faster, which is in everyone's interests.

I love Alonso, he was my favorite driver when I started watching F1. But the issue is, he’s too good to be signed up as a No 2. The top teams prefer to have a defacto 1/2 driver, so he won’t be able to get the second seat in those teams. Then, because of his age, he won’t get the number 1 seat he deserves, because the big teams are looking for long term contracts for lead drivers. So he’s stuck in a gray zone where he’s too good and also too old to be signed by the teams that can deliver championship caliber cars.
