EQ was the best MMO ever made. It's sad that 0.000001% of modern gamers have ever played it.

It's not how quickly they can come up with new ones. Rest assured they have loads of ways to cash in on our nostalgia already thought up. No, it's how quickly they can shove these new monetization methods down our throats without triggering the gag reflex, so to speak. It's been rather slow so far but this perk system is something else. At first I thought the perk system was a bonus for paying customers, as an incentive to keep spending and encourage others to join in the fun, but learning more about it I found it was just a cash grab on top of the loot they're already hauling in from this 22 year old gem. If they want to give existing players more and let paying customers choose a perk each month, that's one thing, but saying 'give us money and we'll make the game easier'? Yeah, game's dead to me.

I Wish they (Daybreak) had simply adopted the old model of monthly subscription and left it at that. They could still get cash infusions by releasing expansions, too. Unfortunately, they decided they wanted the best of both worlds by charging people to play (no, it's not truly free once you realize that caping AAs at 250 basically neuters the game) AND charging micro-transactions. The free game is only going to turn away new players who will get a sour taste thanks to artificially weak characters that can only progress quickly by having high-level players babysit them. Those who stick with it were going to anyway. They are probably just people who played 20 years ago and are looking for nostalgia. In other words, if Daybreak would just give people access to everything for the monthly payment, I'd be fine with that, but Daybreak is proving that they are greedy and not interested in Everquest as an important MMORPG.

I think it's part of the changing climate of the mmo space. The idea of a cash shop + subscription has always rubbed me the wrong way but I also understand the reality of how subscription costs have stagnated. I 100% agree wirh you on some of the eq f2p restrictions. They're pretty harsh but you can get a lot of game for free, it just so happens that that part of the game is barren (talking lower levels) meaning it's a very hollow experience. Thank you so much for your comment!

I don't think it's appropriate to call Everquest a juggernaught of the mmo community anymore. Having played recently around 70% of the population is not actual players but people using mq2 to bot their 6+man squads, this includes "map hack" by the way. It's funny because in the guild I was in it was clearly stated that the guild did not "condone or support" using MQ2 even though more than half the guild consisted of bots. People were 24/7 afk while lvling to 120 effortlessly and even the guild leader did it. The design of the recent expansions is just a copy paste from the previous one with changed names of stuff. Almost every npc and area is just reused assets.

You're not wrong if you're looking st everquest currently though it does still have an active player base and is one of very few games releasing an expansion every single year but the imprint the game has had on the genre over two decades is hard to ignore. It has influenced other mmos both positively and negatively and honestly it doesn't show much sign of slowing down. I'd even hazard a guess that eq2 would be closed down before eq but even that sequel continues to pump out expansions. The quality may sometimes be mixed but the quantity is pretty awe inspiring when you compare eqs longevity to how many mmos have been launched and died since eq first launched back in 1999.

At least it's not like EQ2 where they put items that double your DPS in loot crates... End up spending $2,000 on loot boxes to be accepted into endgame raids, it's sad tbh. I was shocked to see every EQ2 server with low pops, vs EQ having some medium pop servers last month when I checked, but it shouldn't be a surprise seeing as they're only catering to whales nowadays. EQ is next if we know daybreak. I have 0 faith in them... Miss the old SOE days, right before we had to worry about station cash. I heard Amazon injected some money into daybreak to get some say in the EQ name, but AGS has their own issues... Pantheon is the only thing that'll more than likely bring back the old EQ2 kunark days for me.

They are running a business. With a declining (dying...literally) subscriber base. I look at it more supporting a business that provides a service I highly value. I would pay more in sub fees, but the perks have a nice bonus. You have a point - but I think EQ sees that sub fees are fairly low for most games and cannot compete in that area - therefore the perk route.
@Redbeardflynn
@Redbeardflynn 2 жыл бұрын
Fair points! The stagnation of the sub fed for as long as it's been likely hurts mmos across the genre but I have to believe that's also because research has shown people won't pay more than $15 per month for an mmo or else you'd have multiple games charging. Recent release have also seemed to shy away from the sub model so it'll be interesting to see long term how all this works out. Thank you so much for watching and thank you for leaving a comment! Considering the actual cost of actually living has exploded since the 14.99 sub fee was implemented, I'd have to say any toes in the increase water is concerning for me. Also, the sub fee has always been difficult for me to rationalize to myself. This is only compounded by my monthly sub fees for Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime, etc...I know for a fact my exceptionally hot wife isn't going to let me drop the ball on those cause my "videogame" sub is going up lol. 💪😈🤙

That's kind of what I was thinking, too, it's almost like an optional sub price increase instead of making it mandatory. I have to imagine they did plenty of market research before coming to the conclusion to not make it across the board. I can totally see the sub fee argument, for me it's always come down to hours of entertainment and MMOs have always provided more than any other subscription outside perhaps a music subscription or for me, Audible. It does feel like we're drowning in monthly payments a bit, but it's not just MMOs anymore, it's games as a service, streaming, apps...etc etc. Haha and congratulations to you and your marriage! Appreciate the videos on EQ! As far as this new perk system, it sounds like what Black Desert Online does. You RENT bag space and loot bonuses. You buy the game and play for 2 weeks. At two weeks your rented bag space + boosted loot % ends. At this point your bag is entirely 1/3 red (exceeds capacity) and your individual town storage is also 1/3 red (exceeds capacity). They itemize the game with thousands of variations of items but only give you a couple dozen bag spots. When we reached two weeks and found this out, we were so agitated we rage quit. I have been playing EQ off and on since 2001. Got my wife to start playing in 2014. We play for a month or two and quit for the year every year. In any case, if its perks or game dies, we would choose the perks and game living on. People spend more then tier 3 perks in one visit to Starbucks. Thank you again for your EQ videos. Your druid portals section of the POP video had me laughing as a former Halfling Druid main.

For me, farming plat takes way more time than working a job for an equivalent amount to buy a krono or pay the subscription fee. EQ is full of people in their 40s and 50s that can afford the "convenience fees" anyway. More problematic is that the new owners of the EQ IP might decide that revenues need to increase, and the new "perks" system might be a reaction by daybreak to something like that.
@Redbeardflynn
@Redbeardflynn 3 жыл бұрын
Another friend of mine pointed that out that it's tied to new ownership and concerns over this being the tip of the iceberg which could lead to aggressive overmonetization to get money back. I completely agree. I can't devote 8-10 hours a day to playing an MMO like I used to so I absolutely love that I can spend a few bucks to buy Krono to buy things in game that I wouldn't have the time to farm for especially since the gameplay in EQ is so dependant on your gear. It was a night and day experience for me when I came back after a 20 year break. I had such crap gear back then that ultimately I ended up leaving the game because I couldn't keep up with my guild. When I came back and invested $100 into the game and twinked my character out from the get go, the game was 100x more fun.

SWTOR - Star Wars The Old Republic, an MMO published by EA and created by Bioware. Think of it as a story-focused gem if it had been single player, and a decent game multiplayer. ESO - Elder Scrolls Online, one of those MMOs that started out rough but has really begun to shine and is one of the top MMOs out there today. It has action-oriented combat, a good personal story, and a very fair monetization model.

I don't have any particular issue with these types of monetization. The bags and clickies they sell in the station store - some of which are cash-only - have far more of an impact. What does drive me away from EQ is the negative game experiences of content that rewards bad player behavior, or bugged out progression raids that don't flag characters properly, followed up with lack of support interventions to restore the progression to the player. DPG has made a fair effort to alleviate some of the first item (re-scripted Coldain ring quests), but they need to address their support philosophy on raids. Hopefully, their community liaising will drive them in this direction.

As far as a sub model. I am okay with paying a monthly fee if the game has content worthy of it. We spend 5, 10, 15 bucks on bullcrap everyday. I value game time or entertainment by how many hours I would do such activity. For an example going to the movie theatre is expensive. Spending 20-30$ for 2 1/2 hours of entertainment. Pretty expensive. 15 bucks a month for 10-20 hours of game time a week, pretty cheap way to entertain myself. As far as adding more ways to monetize the game. I'm okay with that so long as its not breaking core mechanics. I value the journey, not the destination so leveling 5% slower than other people using a perk is not a deal breaker for me. I feel like people don't like paying for stuff. Take taxes for example. Everyone wants a nice smooth road to drive on w/sidewalks and lights at night but no one wants to pay taxes to build said road. Maybe a bad analogy but my two cents. You want something to happen it has to be financially viable. People want EQ to live on, they have to do things to make it financially viable.

@@Redbeardflynn im hoping it will be Pantheon. I like ESO but there are a lot of mechanics in that game. I like the amount of content and mechanics in eq2, not too much or too little, just about right for jumping in and doing something without it becoming a second career.

@@donaldc3884 I'm really hoping it will be pantheon, too. I hope they can find the right balance. I agree on eso, it's a solid game but lots of stuff going on. Always a fun game to hop in and probably one of the more fair monetization models I've seen

How does one get on Everquest online? Is it called that?
@Redbeardflynn
@Redbeardflynn 3 жыл бұрын
Just "Everquest" and you can play the game by making an account here: www.everquest.com/home and downloading the game there, too. You can experience the "live" game which means the version of the game that is up-to-date with all expansions for free. Thank you for leaving a comment!

Raid currency doesn't start until VoA, TLP population fairly low by that expansion, and far less competitive.

My thoughts are this. If this was a brand new game with everyone starting from scratch then yeah maybe it would be concerning and bordering on P2W at the very least. However we are taking EQ here. As much as I love the game, it is pretty much dead at this point, has been for a while unfortunately. Most people playing now are playing for the nostalgia and/or playing because there aren't any really good MMOs available to play.

I am willing to pay a grand total of 0$ to play an MMO, they all end as pay to win cashgrabs no matter if they're free to play, buy to play or subscription.

Could that be said of all games that have a "live service" model? Battlefield, Destiny, Fortnite, MMOs, GTA...etc etc. I don't think MMOs stand out as being particularly egregious in this but it all circles back to what we, the playerbase, are willing to pay for. Thank you so much for watching and for leaving a comment!

@@Redbeardflynn Yeah, and I have played precisely zero of those games, I mostly play almost exclusively either highly moddable games (Minecraft, Terraria, Skyrim, Stellaris et cetera) and/or indie games. I refuse on principal to pay money to play a game with mircotransactions in it (especially if those microtransactions happen to be gambling too), full stop.

Depending on your point of view, a subscription fee is also pay to win, since without it, you are severely limited or can't play. It can be compared to boxing an alt or a programable repeating keyboard. Some consider it cheating. For me, I didn't want carpal tunnel syndrome so I used a programmable keyboard. Some would call me a cheater. It all depends on your personal boundaries/morals/point-of-view. It would be like calling a person in a race a cheater for having a better shoe that costs more.

I think when subscription fee was required to even access the game that wouldn't be the case but now with it f2p ? You have a very good point. Eq has restricted items and mercs and such behind the sub now and in the past.
