Got into a HUGE argument with a friend a good 5 or 6 years ago about this game, which I was absolutely stoked for. Freaking stoked. But they weren't getting a dime from me, and my friend thought I was the worst person ever for not supporting them. I had to explain to him: look man, this is simple economics. This is either an investment, or a donation. If it's a donation, then there's no further discussion. You donate without an expectation of return, and to someone in need. In this case, there are more worthy and needful people and causes. Therefore, donation is out. So it's an investment. And as an investment, then it might be one of the worst investments of all time. That's why they had to crowdfund it instead of doing the normal thing entrepreneurs do... you know, go to banks to get loans, pitch concepts and products to prospective buyers/investors and then deliver your concept/project and reward your investor's faith with a decent rate of return. So we know why they didn't do the traditional route right? Of course. There has been no return. Any investor would be in several tens of millions of dollars more than half a decade later with no prospective return on the horizon. And the prospect is even WORSE for a crowdfunding investor -- or 'backer' as it were. Not only did you give your hard earned money, but you have no stock, ownership, market share, or any other form of reciprocation for your invested capital, whether that be ten dollars or ten thousand. You literally gain the supposition of digital media with no monetary value whatsoever. So as I said, worst investment ever. Economics 101.

My own prediction: Star Citizen will be transfered to a different company and be a rather insignificant game in its genre by the time it comes out as its more defining design features/ambitions not-yet-done will be cut, and what remains is a game that would have wowed in 2012...just not so much in 2022. And it will probably be overshadowed by a game the world doesn't even know about yet, though may or may not already be in development *cough* ;) *cough* A not insignificant number of original backers will have had so many life changes that the game no longer has any place in their life because they're no longer in college, have had kids and started families, have different careers, or straight up died having long since written off their pledges as a bad investment. @@M3A7 Sorry what? That's wrong. Cyberpunk was announced in 2013. Yeah, sure, the concept probably vaguely existed two years before when Star Citizen started development, but you're kind of leaving out a massively fucking critical detail. CD Projekt Red developed and released The Witcher 3 in 2015. They released Blood & Wine, capable of being a game on its own, in 2016. That's not to mention Hearts of Stone. Cyberpunk didn't enter into legitimate, serious development until after Witcher 3 was out. Those development cycles aren't comparable and you're taking the piss if you think they are.

I bought-in to Star Citizen in either 2020 or 2021, joined a Discord, and tried the game. I ended up refunding it, blocking the person I met, and leaving their Discord server. It is, hands down, the worst feeling I've ever experienced insofar as being burned by a game, and I've bought into games that were abandoned and shut down by the devs in Early Access. There's this disturbing level of copium and wishful thinking mixed with a strange elitism surrounding Star Citizen. I was told that I just needed to keep trying, that it's in alpha so they just need time to iron-out all the issues. "People don't understand what a true alpha is". I understand that if you're gonna sell your game it should be stable. As a baseline. You get your systems stable, then you add more. It's like modding. You don't add 250 mods off the Nexus without testing a single one and expect everything to work perfectly. Ignoring all the performance issues I experienced, as if my 5600XT was integrated graphics, I got into my first ship. I climbed a ladder and killed my "friend" through collision. He was pissed off and told me I needed to learn the game. No. The game is garbage. I then fell through the ship and into the space station. The game is a failed-project walking simulator, not a space-sim. It feels like a AAA backed bottom of the barrel asset flip you get for under $1 on Steam. Ah, and when I first woke up in the game I got to the elevator and there was no elevator. Apparently this "happens" when there is an event. The servers simply cannot handle the strain. Then why the fuck is there an event? I was told it was "stress testing". There's this really bad-aftertaste experience of learning that the fans you meet aren't capable of being objective about the game and its development. Or that you, as a consumer, who was promised a "fun" experience gets told you just aren't rich enough to play their amazing space sim that will never release. Games have been developed, lived, and died on the development cycle of SC. And many more will do so. Save yourself the headache, avoid this game.

Star citizen isnt a " feature creep " its exactly what most have pledge for at least a vast majority of backers who submited design ideas and request in the first year of the after the original kickstarter , also the kickstarter wasnt Ultra specifics on what the mechancics of the game would be , all that was announced was it was going to be a first person highly details game with Sq42 campaign and Star citizen Persistant Univers ... thats said 2013 was pre production stuff fleshing out the very basics of the game , hirering peoples etc.. And asking backers on the website and original kickstarter backer what they truely wanted CIG to deliver ... peoples ask for boarding , Fps combat , for planetery exploration etc.. and these things were suposed to be added later on with DLC updates and stuff ... but CR hire many Ex crytek guys who convince him that it was better to flesh out all the tech requires instead of trying to do things the wrong way and then compleatly have to redo everything and change the game dramastically ... So they choose the aproach of building it the best way possible instead of trying to put it out fast and ruin the reputation of the game ... So since then they made Insane progress , they build insane amount of assets , mechanics , Ships , and remeber that all of this is reusable and is done the right way ... they build procedural and modular system with all the pieces they create with many variations to flesh out the world ... they created biome , planets , moons , asteroids , asteroids base , No loading screen seamless advanture when your in the actual PU and that on the fidelity level of Crysis 3 and more ... etc..etc..etc.. The list of all the things they have done is way to huge to even describe it and put a shadow over any other games ... the thing is that they cannot release it Now because there is still way much more to be done and its not a bad thing ... next years they will probably end up in Beta and SQ42 as chance to be released wich does not require the same network support that the PU require wich does not only hit network but also performance of the clients ... Star marine or arena comander run 10 time better than the PU and a single player version of the PU would allow you to run it at more than 60fps easy and even better with Nvidia drivers optimisation etc.. The reality is those " hit piece " agains star citizen are laughable and done by either ignorant or impacient peoples ..... Star citizen as you call it " feature creep " is the game i pledge for and is the game i want to be deliver ... I dont wish SC will have a launch like Nomansky with 1/10 of the features peoples were expecting ... NMS is totally procedurally generated wich help a lot in the amount of work require to deliver it . while SC is handcrafted with procedural tech to complement the artist work wich is very different ... well

@PurushNahiMahaPurush3 жыл бұрын
What's even worse is that the whole "they had to make their own engine from scratch" applies even for CDPR since they admitted that the tech they had for Witcher 3 had to be heavily modified since CP2077 has so many mechanics and features that were not supported by Red Engine. SC is just extremely poorly managed. By the time it actually comes out, their tech and engine will be outdated and their game will be mediocre.

To be fair: "Shootermode" was a goal all along. They wanted a "first person universe" where you could switch from piloting a ship to actually running around in the bigger ones. Which is pretty cool. *The* *real* *cardinal* *sin* *of* *Star* *Citizen, was* *the* *addition* *of* *procedural* *planets*. This is when things really blew out of proportion. As long as it was a pure space game, their goals were somewhat within reason. Space itself is barely a texture and requires almost no dev time at all. Which allows you to focus on ships and some nifty gimmicks alongside them (like being able to leave your seat and walk around). Like in most space games, "planets" would only feature as a couple levels separated from space by a loading screen. Easy peasy. However, with the addition of planets, they now have to deal with* Filling them with content. Which, despite what everyone will tell you about the wonders "procedural technology" is far, far from easy. Especially if you don't want it to become soulcrushingly repetitive.* This includes whole new planetary levels, building types, AI behavior, mechanics (like the train system) etc etc. * Figuring out planetary physics, day night cycles, biomes- Ground Vehicles (and assorted gameplay and physics)* Biomes (believable simulating hundreds of alien worlds)*- Accurate distances in space. Remember how I told you space was easy? Well it is unless you decide to put in realistically sized fucking planets for some reason. Essentially, for the past 2 years(!) they have sunk most of their development time into bringing us a couple of barren moons. And the saddest part of it that even despite the monumental effort they are putting into this (and arguably some interesting results) the end result will very likely *still* be soulcrushingly boring. Who on earth wants to ride an ingame train for 20minutes just so he can have a procedural city rather than the regular handcrafted level every other game has? And this isn't even beginning to mention the actual hub worlds, like Terra or Earth, will hundreds of thousands of cities. Hell will freeze over twice before they can even begin to hope to craft this. Even with procedural tech. Edit: KZbin screws with formatting. Sorry
@jordanward-allen40195 жыл бұрын
Dont think you understand how the cities work. They aren't procedural, the planet landscapes are. Hurston is entirely handcrafted.
@MrInkblots5 жыл бұрын
Then it would take even longer. He's referencing ArcCorp though, which is a procedurally generated city-planet. What will they do with Earth, procedurally generate every town and city on Earth, or handcraft each one? Sure, they will likely make it you can only visit designated areas on Earth, but that won't apply to most planets and moons if it doesnt apply to ArcCorp or Hurston. Making the locations will probably take at least two years in and of itself.
@jordanward-allen40195 жыл бұрын
I dont understand either of your points. You name something that is time consuming but a necessity to complete a functional game. I dont think it's surprising that the first planet they are making is a polluted planet with only 1 major city, to get a feel for how the game will be, show the art style, begin building the necessary features but without having to create a planet wide city. What is wrong with the game completed with all it's major features and developed relatively smaller planets/spacestations/moons then after release work on the BIG planets?
@MrInkblots5 жыл бұрын
ArcCorp is already done by the way, which is a planet wide city. Not sure if I got that across. There wouldn't be anything wrong with starting with a smaller galaxy, but CIG seems to intend to release SC with all planets, moons, and space stations featured in the Star Map completed and explorable. How long is that supposed to take?
@Fulgrim885 жыл бұрын
"Hurston is entirely handcrafted" That's factually wrong. Hurston, like Arccorp, is mostly procedually generated, with a select few areas that you can enter. If you think that all those buildings are functional and enterable, it is you who does not understand their development process (or basic math, for that matter) Handcrafting a city the size of Houston would take *years* and go well beyond the scope of AAA games like GTA V (and even they model only a handful of interiors). And that's just one city. On one planet. Eventually they want to bring us planets like Terra and earth, which in real life have THOUSANDS of cities and tens of thousands of villages. They already talk about no fly zones as a means to shepherd you away from the 95% of the city that is just a texture, and the more populated planets become the more they will have to rely on that, because filling it with content (even procedurally) will take a lifetime.

I in fact, DO know a decent amount about game development, at least, on an independent level. And 3 years ago I had no concerns whatsoever about Star Citizen, but in it's current state I have to ask, what are they doing? Too much time is spent trying to keep backers 'happy' with stupid things, not enough goes into core feature set. And I'm not talking bugs, or graphical glitches. Hah. No. That's what you fix in BETA (remember Beta? The thing 'early access' has conditioned people to somehow start calling 'Alpha' instead, where 'Beta' is now really just a release candidate with a few of the loose ends not quite tied up properly?) What I mean is, where are the core systems? OK, so it's not like none of them exist, but you NEED these systems to work before you can create content around them. There's no point building a mining ship if the programming and game logic for mining is missing. If you build one anyway, you're going to have to rebuild it when you finalise the systems. This issue is all over the place. Why are there dozens of flyable ships, yet every single one of them is missing supposed internal systems/gameplay features/whatever. You have to build your features first! The core features! Content and UI is the LOWEST priority stuff, yet that's most of what they've apparently done. In order, you have to establish roughly this to make a game work. (assuming a multiplayer online mmo-like thing as star citizen has become that is) Some very basic features have multiple layers that you can implement in stages (for instance being able to handle keyboard input at all is more fundamental that supporting key rebinding.) Granted, in a modern context some of these you get from using a pre-existing game engine. (though if you start needing to heavily customise that engine...) 1. Core engine - OS/hardware interfacing, memory management, file handling, graphics routines, input handling. 2. Peripheral engine features - Sound, networking. Advanced resource management features, scripting support... 2a (for mmo type games) Server side infrastructure and support programs. 3. Fundamental game logic and core systems. (eg being able to move ships and characters around, interacting with things, etc. - how extensive this needs to be depends on what the game needs to be able to do). Some of this may require construction of test content, but generally that test content is extremely rough and unpolished - it exists to test how the systems should work and IF they work, not to impress anyone. 4. Extended logic, minor systems, minigames, basic UI behaviour etc. 5. Content; Ships, locations, environments, missions, extended UI, etc. 6. Bugfixing, performance optimisation. (yes. Really this is the VERY last part, and for good reason.) Now, you can start partially implementing 5 as you go, but the more you do so without locking down 3 (and 4 if the specific content in any way depends on or interacts with the features yet to be implemented), the more you end up doing redundant work that has to be redone. And redone again. And again, and again... Why? Because it's built on top of something undefined, and thus you don't know what the missing pieces are going to look like, because they don't exist yet! Thus, inevitably, you end up having to rebuild things constantly to get them to work as intended... Same with fixing bugs prematurely if they are part of incomplete systems; Unless they literally break the code, or would create a mess down the line, fixing them when the system they're part of is not even fully implemented doesn't do much. It may fix itself. You may (or more likely will) introduce a dozen different other problems that come and go as the system changes... Problem I see with star Citizen is it does WAAAY too much of 5 and 6, (especially 5), and nowhere near enough of the earlier stuff. And unsurprisingly they keep having to redo stuff they already did because of it. Because of course they do, because the didn't design it right the first time. (how could they when they didn't know what they needed it to be, because they hadn't got a reliable definition of what that was?) So... Yeah... I'm not holding my breath, honestly.
@angryvaginasfromspace77186 жыл бұрын
Dude, thanks for your esse. You have layed up some basics and summed up my thoughts simultaniously. Like really, WTF? How can you fix bugs when you DONT HAVE A FUCKING GAME TO BEGIN WITH. Content like ships is not as bad, as they are mostly models/concepts, it can be integrated in a way, even if the engine changes internally. But polishing a gam.... a thing, that is really a few unfinished modules with laughable content density just scattered all over the place... fucking why?
@Geolas886 жыл бұрын
There are so many ships with not all of their features intact, because as you have noted yourself, people are getting impatient and they wanted to allow the players to play something, or at least some part of what they played for. If they would have done it the way you suggested, which is the right way, with a kickstarter project where the development is public, the screeching would be even louder because I can assure you, there would be nothing to play by now, as the development of major systems is still not finished. Im confident that it will work out in the end, and the release schedule has already gotten much faster.

@KuraIthys6 жыл бұрын
That's indeed what I thought 3 years ago.. If they had been doing this the way this is SUPPOSED to be done, the complaints would've been even louder. The problem is, what they've done in an effort to keep people happy slows down development and actually makes it less likely they'll get the job done. Plus, it means a lot of redundant effort, having to implement and re-implement partial features constantly. Will they get it done? Maybe. But what they've been doing really is way off target from what they SHOULD have been doing. And it's hurting them, almost certainly. Probably not as much as it might appear at the surface (because you can't for instance get your 3d modellers to do programming, thus if you're paying them they may as well do something - but really you probably shouldn't have hired so many of them so early on. ) We'll see how well they untangle this mess they've made for themselves... But it IS a mess, that much is certain.

I also worked in the game industry and you are being real. I may have a small issue with the tone but the issues in the video and as you are discussing are real. In my opinion if the rail jack update for warframe comes out successfully and delivers on its hype then warframe will essentially shit all over starcitizen as not only can you fly a battleship in space you can also use a space jetpack to kill enemy droneships, fight off invading enemies inside of your own shop, manage ship energy, and have a space pirate battle while also being able to build your ship through farming resources with your clan for free.

Not sure why mention warframe right now cause we don't have railjack YET and it won't be on the same scale as start citizen / elite dangerous game would be. I remember a developer who said, "No one understands games development. One minute, you've spent two years on a project only for it to get canned: then the next, you finish a game that was only in development for two months. It's both maddening and stressful."
@Rickbearcat6 жыл бұрын
In the case of Star Citizen, I think we are clearly dealing with the former statement. Which is why people in the community who side with Star Citizen use it so much on those who protest the length of development on the game. For such a long video to have not included this statement (as a knock to SC) is either incompetence or was deliberately left out of the narrative.
@reeven17216 жыл бұрын
@ianmaluk1 But that's what actual developers (programmers, artists, producers, directors, community managers, etc) mean when they say "You don't understand games development": software R&D is not a goddamn assembly line. The muggles just don't get that. No project to implement novel design or tech ever goes according to plan. Ever. Things you had planned a certain amount of time/resources to do are actually harder because of unforeseen roadblocks, so you need to get additional funds or cut scope elsewhere. Or the client/community/executives asks for an additional "really important" feature (or you yourself suggest it), so you get additional funds or cut scope elsewhere. Or something you had planned to be difficult turns out to be done in half the time, so you add scope elsewhere or set aside contingency money. Or there's human drama so you need to divert executive and/or marketing time to manage it. And so on. Managing a large scale project can be like steering a car down hill with nothing but a hand brake. Muggles don't get that. At the end they're happy they got the product they wanted and they have no idea what happened in the black box that made it. The unique thing about Star Citizen is that we get to peer inside the black box, and the guts are ugly. Welcome to software development. It's both maddening and stressful. I do it for a living. I wouldn't trade it for the world, but hell am I glad I get two weeks vacation next week.
@b.heaven92346 жыл бұрын
Reeven - I can't speak for a games development perspective, but I can speak on a software development one. In terms of project management, Star Citizen isn't looking too great. While we can all appreciate the features being added, Feature / scope creep is a legitimate problem of this game. Many bad projects I saw come from people injecting more ideas they want to see in the game to the point that they're missing out on key deadlines. Project managers are there to draw the line when it comes to feasible releases. It is good that they have scheduled alpha releases throughout the years, but to some people (among them disgruntled backers) it's going a bit too slow for their liking. In the end, how much more money and time do they need? Is ~190 million more than enough? Or does it barely scratch the surface? How about the 4 year development? They can't really tell that they "should take as much time and money as they need to deliver the best game possible" if backers slowly lose interest and their money pool stop growing. When that time comes, they will have no choice but to cut scope because the "getting additional funds" option would no longer be available.

Backer project started in 2012. 16,000 x 10 = 160,000 backer deaths even with a 2022 Star Citizen release. Of course these numbers are skewed because the 2.2 million backers didn't ALL jump on during 2012, but you get the idea. Which is why I estimated ~100,000 deaths might be more reasonable.

This game is a really good case study for everyone who whines about how devs are put in crunch time or that games aren't going balls to the wall creatively. We can see both ends of the extremes. SC is where there are no restrictions, therefore everything is restricted because nothing is finished. On the other end everything is... sometimes finished, but it's boring, flat, the same-old thing from generations before. There seem to be so few studios that can actually strike a balance between creative freedom and authority restricting that freedom for the betterment of the whole game. SC is so focused on making sure that if your character could take a dump that you could basically SMELL that shit that they forgot to make something basic such as walking not killing you out of nowhere.

Merc Enum agreed. Even now they still aren’t ironed out their core gameplay, or even added things that the game needs to actually function with a core gameplay loop. Instead all I ever hear is about how they added ten new feature-complete ships and vehicles and added another city to the game. Meanwhile elevators don’t work properly, collision is still buggy (which is a cornerstone of a game even functioning), mission systems are still half broken, and the only system they have out of the dozens they said they were gonna have isn’t even finished yet. Yet new vehicles and cosmetics keep releasing all on-time.

Oh nono! error about Star Marine: The game mode that's currently available is NOT the version made by Illphonic (the sonic boom people) CIG gave up trying to port that build, threw EVERYTHING they did into the garbage (levels, code, models, mechanic concepts) and just hastily threw their own build together from the ground up. This was because they had failed to keep Illphonic up to date on CIG's own in house engine modifications, so Illphonic wound up basing everything they did on wildly different, outdated specifications, which again, was something that CIG were supposed to have kept them up to date on. Understandable oversight but try try not to throw so much shade on the sonic boom people because after all, they've shipped a triple-A title, and buggy as it was, that alone is literally 100% more games than CIG. kudos on the video regardless.

The Star Marine bit was indeed a massive error in judgment. They commissioned an outside team to work on a module when they had comparatively small amount in backing, assuming they had peaked around 6-7 million in backing. They however made a deal, and no matter what that deal had to be kept. What they received was at that point so incompatible it was less work to reverse engineer it and push in the mechanics developed by the other team, than try to port it successfully, and even then it was a horrendously buggy mess that ran at 30FPS at most on a beast of a machine. The mechanics you see, such as bleedout et.c. are by the Illphonic team; the mechanical function of star marine is their work, even if the code isn't.
