How can you call that building a failure? It’s absolutely gorgeous, it was built using some of the most modern materials and techniques in construction today. The only thing is the floor plates are a bit small, big deal, just look at this thing, it’s absolutely incredible! They keep saying that at night time only half the lights are on, nobody seems to realize that the top half of the building is a hotel, which is why most of the lights aren’t turned on. People really should get to know the facts before they comment! Duh!!! They even built a skyscraper totally Surrounded by a curtain wall of glass to regulate the temperatures, and to save money and energy. This building is way ahead of its time, and floor plates aside, I absolutely love this building. Granted I’m in Toronto, and I have never seen it before, but I don’t need to see it in person to know what an outstanding structure it truly is. My only concern, is that they’ve built so much real estate and such a small part of land, that will easily be overcome if ocean level rise continues at its current rate. If it does, practically all of Shanghai will be underwater and all those beautiful new buildings will be destroyed. If I had to give only one negative comment, it would be just that, they should’ve built it on higher ground, because sooner or later, Shanghai will literally be under water.

By this metric you can add the Empire State building in NY to the list of 'failed' buildings. Five years after it opened the building was so empty they didn't bother running elevator service above floor 45 (a couple of exceptions including the observation deck that made as much money as the rented floors did in the early years). For years the building was dubbed the 'Empty State' building. So compared to the Empire State, the Shanghai Tower is a major success in its early years. Would this video have been made if the upper floors (the ones to be a hotel) had been illuminated at night? That's certainly what they did with the Empire State building to give the illusion of occupancy.
@dry55554 жыл бұрын
Yeah but you forget to mention it opened in 1931 during the Great Depression which lasted until WW2. So of course occupancy was going to be low. If it had opened for five years during the 1920s occupancy would have no doubt been 90% which was normal at the time. Your comparison with the Shanghai Tower, regardless of what happens to ST, is specious.
@mikeatyouttube4 жыл бұрын
@@dry5555 That mostly my point. Neither building is a failed building. I put failed in quotes because video's authors defined failed by this specious metric. They call it failed and then go on to explain *why* many of the floors are unoccupied (for a hotel). Nobody would call the Empire State a failed building now. The financiers took a hit after construction because of the depression but then everyone did. In fact, why produce a video like this at all? Why not show off the amazing technology designed in to the structure? Well, actually there is a point, a propaganda point : this video is produced by CTGN - arm of the government - and their policy has changed to discourage any more tall buildings. This video, in a small way, might just be part of their bidding. But KZbin is banned in China so who is the audience? Us?
@dry55554 жыл бұрын
@@mikeatyouttube Ok, I understand and agree with what you're saying. You can't call a building a failure unless you use reasonable and objective metrics. In addition, I think you're saying that this is a propaganda video (agreed) supporting the Shanghai Tower as a matter of pride but since it's for the international audience they don't want to over do it as they are trying to discourage more tall buildings. Is this correct?
@mikeatyouttube4 жыл бұрын
@@dry5555 It's odd, isn't it. It's sort of anti-propaganda. You would have thought they would put a positive spin on it like 'the lower floors are occupied and soon there will be a fantastic hotel opening on the upper floors' - something like that. Of course, the video could still be for a domestic audience too, broadcast on an indigenous streaming service. I think I'll stop thinking about motives because we'll never know for sure.
@dontlaughtoomuch113 жыл бұрын
@@mikeatyouttube A building with an occupancy rate of 35% (at best!!!) can objectively be seen as a failure... The main reason why big buildings in the centre of Shanghai are no longer attractiving as many businesses as they used to has to do with the outward trend of people and companies relocating to the outskirts of the city to cut down on housing costs, rent cost, energy costs etc. etc. Shanghai by all standards is expensive as hell!! Not a single Shanghainese will tell you otherwise. So this vanity project has been a really good lesson for China. Don't try to compete with cities like NY where sky scrapers are common, do your own thing and only build in the lines of usefulness and obviously competitiveness and what generates revenue. Population density outside of Shanghai is far bigger than in Shanghai for a good reason, the Chinese government is trying to push people from "overpolluting" the cities, so people only go there for work. ( We have seen the failure of bad city planning or better said INEXISTANT and more importantly inefficient city planning, like Dhaka, Lagos, Jakarta, Mumbai, LA, Manilla etc etc.) Being stuck in traffic costs the economy billions...

To be honest, this video is straw-manning the B1M's video. This video makes it seem as if the B1M was calling the design/architecture of the building a failure which is not true. The B1M mentions all the same points this video mentions on the design including the air dynamics, ecosystems and so on. From 1:00 until 4:40 this video speaks about the design and architecture of the building which the B1M wasn't talking about and many of the points made here were also brought up in the B1M video! Also, from 4:50 onward, the video talks about the top floors being a hotel making the B1M appear ignorant, but the B1M mentions that in their video. From 5:10 this video address the occupancy rate and then uses an out of context clip from the B1M talking about half the tower not lighting up. But this isn't the reason the B1M gives for its low occupancy rate. The B1M talks about the occupancy rate being due to fire safety concerns and high lease prices midst a fall in office demand in the area. This video takes B1M video clips out of context making it look as if the B1M was making an argument that they were not making. I think the B1M would agree that the building is well designed and built and that the chief architects did a great job building a building that met the requirements of the owners. That wasn't the B1M's argument. From my understanding, the B1M was bringing into question the owners decision to build a building that, at the time of completion, failed to meet the demand of the market and therefore failed to be the symbolic structure it was designed to be and how it struggled to attract international tenants and how it was plagued with so many challenges. That was the B1Ms argument, none of which is addressed by this video at all. I am not saying that the B1M's argument is right or wrong but what I am saying that taking B1M's video out of context and straw-manning an argument that they didn't make is wrong regardless of whether the building failed or not.

This “fail” idea due to occupancy rate is ridiculous. The Empire State Building in New York, built in 1930 did not reach a profitable occupancy rate until the early 1950’s but no one considers it a failed building because it took more than 20 years to become profitable. On the contrary, it was held up as an example of a successful mega-project for decades. Anyone who thinks that a mega-project must make its return on investment inside 5 years is unrealistic. It seems to me that this building is very successful in terms efficiency and habitibility, and an occupancy rate of 70% at this early stage is very good.

@@kzm5956 so what? China is not looking to be "respected "by the west in any way, they have another vision. The west feels superior and because of that is falling and getting stuck without innovation nor improvement. Also, China is pushing forward for environmental protection in a much faster way than any western superpower during their industrialization period, do some research before accusing). In addition, China invented the civil service system to administer the government. It developed into a rigorous examination system whereby those who pass local exam would take provincial exams, then the passers would take national exams. The exams would be given in government compounds where takers would be isolated in cubicles to ensure impartiality, and the exams might take days to complete. Those who passed local exams usually became teachers, and those who passed higher level exams would be assigned to posts in the government. Compared to other countries’ haphazard, poke-in-the-dark appointment of officials, the Chinese system was impartial, meritocratic, and offered equal opportunity to all. It was an upward mobility route for poor families who had smart children. It encouraged scholarship, learning, analysis of historical and cultural affairs, and thinking. It fosters scholarship as the route to a better life in China and other Confucian cultures today. England copied this Chinese civil service examination system in 18th century, then other Western nations copied it into their governments. In US, while politicians are elected to and out of office periodically, the government machinery is seamlessly administered by federal, state and local civil service personnel. To get a job in civil service, applicants have to pass clearly defined exams to demonstrate relevant competency. Grab some books, to understand the present we have to look back the past.
