There are probably 10K+ problems vids regarding the troubles of this hobby, and 10K+ answers vids too... But more likely, only 50 or so real answers for those problems... There is so much misinformation out there (even from so called Guru's like Father Fish), that will either make a small difference, or none at all... I take in as much info about the problem at hand and then just as much (if not more) regarding how to deal with it... I even ask my LFS (30+years in the business) to then give me more advice... Only then do I take steps to correct what may be happening, once I weigh up the pro's and con's of the advice I've been given. Your vids and channels are some of the best that I have watched, with great advice (some that has helped me in times of need)... I thank you for that and hope that you continue to keep it real, and balance your opinions on your findings as you have always done.

The "new tank mania" is wild. I get that it's helpful for the algorithm to constantly be putting out a new tank build, but I don't think it's super healthy for the hobby to be so consumed with having a fish room with chronically new tanks. I would love to see more content about long term aquarium keeping, and building a system that you understand in stead of attacking every problem as stand-alone phenomenon that needs a chemical treatment.

Bringing my hobby onto KZbin (and Facebook but mostly KZbin) was probably the best thing I’ve ever done for my hobby or I’d probably still be stuck in the beginner phase. I learned so much, whether it was watching people like John or Jason or Joey, or from people commenting on my videos giving me advice. I was still in the beginner phase when I started (my old videos of my old setups from 10-12 years ago make cringe lol). I’ve never really put too much effort into becoming a big channel. I mainly just showcase what I have, as well as documenting the evolution of my hobby as I’ve gone from beginner to “somewhat” experienced over the last 12 years. I really do miss some of the OG fishtubers that stopped posting or got out of the hobby but I’m glad John is still here !

John and Lisa, you got me back into the hobby. I had too many tanks, too, when my landlord surprised me by not renewing my lease. It would have cost me too much money to have to move the aquariums alone, so I put everything up for grabs on FB and Craig's List. Now I am ready for a second and third tank from Lisa's guppies and shrimp!

A point John made hit me right in the nostalgia bone! The cardinal sin is real. Now, my example comes from before I realized KZbin was more than funny videos and music, but this happened to me as well. I wanted a silver arowana so I googled "How big do arowana get?". The first article I read said they get 24 inches. That's what I wanted to hear. That's what I ran with. It wasn't until after I discovered KZbin as a source of information years later that I found out Silver Arowana can get nearly twice that size. Multiple opinions and Multiple perspectives are really a must if you're going to do your due diligence.

If it wasn't for the fishtubers I probably would never have gotten started in the hobby. The video format and various personalities made learning feel a lot better than staring at a wall of text. I am certain that both of your channels have prevented me from making silly mistakes. 3-4 months of "research" and I feel pretty equipped to handle whatever my aquarium can throw at me. I'm just waiting to get my first slice of humbe pie 😂
@bobegbert5 ай бұрын
IMHO Humble pie either has or will happen to everyone. Info like John and Jason's help reduce the chance or at least prepare you to handle it. As an example, I love cichlids. I started with south Americans. I knew that I also wanted Mbunas and peacocks. I learned, thankfully before buying the fish, that none of the 3 species would live together in peace. So, I have 3 tanks of healthy cichlids instead of one tank of fish killing each other. I didn't do it all at once but before I bought another species, I had a tank cycled and ready.

If anything KZbin is where the best people are, you guys and both your partners in addition to the good things you provide. If anything TikTok is creating divides, stealing content through water marks on videos and lastly burning out the presenter/contributor by making them reach so far the hand lands on the wallet and full circle to the mouth in a moment of “oh my….”. True story happened to me! I left for seeing hateful content and comments being pushed as ok and I cannot align myself with 500+ animals with a social media platform that would happily see me fail and my pets suffer. The only thing that really bothers me is poor husbandry. Obviously that's also somewhat subjective but let's be honest- an oscar in a 29g is never going to be okay. @andrewwhittaker29085 ай бұрын
I agree 100%. I think any form of negativity or verbalization of hurtful opinions towards others is DEFINITELY an enormous negative. Alot of modern day keyboard warriors out there. Negativity towards each other benefits no one, it doesn't change minds or teach anyone. First thing it does is trigger defensive responses and shuts down the flow of information. Facebook groups are a prime example of this.

I miss the days of books and magazines a little. I know they still exist but I think the quality, consistency and new releases of written media have been reduced. 18:00 like you said. You have to beware of people who make videos of setting something up, and not showing the results. Things may look great for a few hours, a few days, maybe weeks, then fall apart into a disaster. This applies to Aquariums, anything alive and building/repairing things. Those types of videos just chase views, not education or possibly unintentionally.

I think it depends on how you do it. ex: Dan of Dan's Fish has a format that is verty effective - especially because it's his business. He starts with his customer service goal, and the status relative to that, then new fish he has in stock, and the giveaway (not necessary but fun), and the rest of his podcast is answering questions from his listeners. well done and professional. Others out there just spend an hour basically talking about themselves and that gets boring, or their perspective is so narrow that it gets old very quickly. You guys do a back-and-forth, which is a good discussion of whatever topic you are on. just my 2 cents

Agree completely that as a content consumer we bear the responsibility of applying the information judiciously and not as an absolute truth. Good show doing exactly that!

Maybe I'm just interpreting the statement a little differently than you, but honestly, I truly do not care if a video I share gets 47 views or 47,000 views. I mean, I WOULD be lying if I said I didn't get a kick out of it when a few of the videos I have released did well (for me), but I'm not constantly looking at my analytics. In fact, I think I can honestly say that I've probably taken the time to look at them MAYBE 3 or 4 times since creating my channel. The truth is, I know this will never be a source of income for me in any real sense. I video with my phone. I do not edit. I post about things not fish related, and I don't post on a set schedule. If the people who do chase numbers are to be believed, all those things are things KZbin analytics absolutely HATES... and I'm fine with that. Will I try to do better as I go? Sure. I'll probably get some editing software someday. I'll probably buy a camera and a mic someday, too. I may never post on a schedule, but heck, I might even try that, just to see how it goes. What I know for sure though is, if this ever stops being fun, I'll be gone like a fast un the wind. If there's one thing I've learned over the last few years, it's that life is short and tomorrow isn't promised to anyone, so make the best of the time you've got and don't have any regrets.

This has been very insightful. I have a super, super small channel that's all over the map because I have a million hobbies, and I want to share them all. I've been having a huge problem trying to niche down to cater to what youtube says my audience wants; this has been what I needed to hear to just keep going so long as I enjoy what I'm doing. I will just keep sharing what brings me joy and inspiration and hope it can do the same for others. You both have been so helpful to me in learning more about aquariums, specifically the species spotlight style videos and I think you for that. Jason I've listened to your recorded lectures before as well which certainly lends to your credibility, but your channels (both) speak for themselves. I'd guess that the "older generation" (such as myself who is inching up on 40, and above) favors the long format videos where as the younger generation fancies the short format. It makes me wonder what the future of KZbin will look like (and I certainly hope it doesn't ever push long format to the wayside!)

Video Age: honestly I appreciate when creators remaie videos. Maybe the information is the same, maybe not, but: * You have more experience now, sonthe information is more likely to be correct and current. We learn new things all the time in this industry. * Old content is very hard to search, and rarely comes up. * Newer content tends to have a higher production level. So... Personally? Yeah, do, remake old content whether you have something new to add or not.

In reply to Jason's last question, "has KZbin helped". I live in a town of 2800 people. I know one person that I consider knowledgeable enough to give good advice that doesn't or work in or own a pet store. They are helpful but their knowledge is spread among fish, dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and anything that people keep as pets. Sure there are a few locals with a small tank of guppies or goldfish. I have 4 tanks in my living room, the smallest is 55 gallon and they range up to 125 gallon. (I also have 3 floor jacks in my basement to support them). Of course, I use youtube for a lot of my info. I'm really into cichlids and I can't even buy them within an hour drive with the occasional exception of the local pet store taking in one or two and trading them for store credit, then they call me, knowing that I'll probably by them for 3 times the cash that they gave in store credit. Thank you, guys.

Let me retract a small piece of what I said. The local pet store does sell angelfish which I have learned from you guys is a type of cichlid. They also keep blood parrots, which I have 2 in my south American tank. As for Mbunas well over an hour drive. Peacocks about 2 hours.

BTW, If I knew about KZbin back then I would have known when the Aratus grew up and changed colors, he would kill everything in the tank. Anyway, now up to 4 tanks, 2-10's, 40b and back with mbuna, and a new 40l with Tanganyikans. Jason, you should peruse more videos on tanganyikan cichlids. The recent one was a good taste. The video might be found on a spectrum somewhere where it is mostly education with a bit of entertainment or mostly entertaining with a bit of education. Isn't the fish industry a big part of the blame here ? They show pictures of 20 saltwater fish on the box of a 3 gallon tank box ! What does the young child think when he buys these tanks ? You and others should start shaming these tank company of their sales only technique.

If KZbin ruined the hobby then I wouldn't be watching this. So it can't be that bad? But it would be safe to say that there is just flat out a lot of bad and confusing information out there and could pose a problem if you don't know how to filter through it. Now with that said a lot can be learned from KZbin also and there is some valuable information on KZbin. If not for KZbin I would of never heard anything either one of you ever had to say regarding this hobby. So there is some value there, just a matter of how you look at it I guess.

KZbin helped me get more involved in the aquarium hobby. I've been keeping fish for around 45 years. About 20 years ago I did downgrade and took down all of my inside aquariums and just kept my 8600 gallon koi pond due to lack of time to maintain and doing house projects, but I pretty much completed all I wanted to do. I went back to my YT history to see what started this all back up again. I did watch a few of what John calls "The Florida Boys" videos for entertainment, but those did plant a seed in my mind about getting another fish tank for inside. I don't know if I searched or was suggested by YT but my first "real" video was KGTropicals "YES you CAN By These Top 10 Fish at PETSMART or PETCO!!". Then I watched several more KGTropical videos trying to see what has changed in 20 years. Then my first video from Jason's PrimeTimeAquatics was "75 Gallon Aquarium Pros and Cons: So Many Options!" and I geeked and nerded out with his science/teaching videos. Aug 8th 2022 was when I went to my LFS and got a 65 gallon since it fit the spot I had for a tank....now I have 6 main tanks and 4 quarantine/hospital tanks inside ranging from 10 gallon to 250 gallon. So yes KZbin is helpful, just not to my wallet :)

I despise short. Even more so the notifications. I think it’s a new vid and it’s just stupid shorts
