I'd like to thank my lawyer, LolO, for springing me from ban prison. I maintain my innocence because my point was misconstrued. Listen to the ACLU, folks. Assert your rights to the police but when they decide that they don't give a fuck about your rights, then your rights go from being something that protects you to something that gets you restitution in the courts after the fact. As for the essay thing, I had never seen ban appeals before and thought I was writing something that would be read off-stream, so my intent was to explain the situation. For posterity, I shall do so here: My comment that initially set Hasan off was me saying "some people in chat are acting like if a guy makes one mistake then he deserves whatever the cops do to him" (I am paraphrasing.) Hasan seized on the word "mistake" to imply that the ATF guy wasn't acting completely within his rights. That wasn't what I meant, and my attempts to clarify didn't improve the situation. Here's a philosophical question: a man points a gun at you and says "get on the floor or I will shoot you." You tell him "it is illegal for you to shoot me, I do not have to comply with your order." If he ignores your rebuttal and might very well shoot you if you don't get on the floor, what do you do? Once the police decide that they are not going to abide by your rights, you are now potentially in a "comply or die" situation. My opinion is that it is a mistake to choose the "or die" option unless complying is somehow worse. The ATF guy didn't comply because he thought he was above local PD--and in a normal situation where the police are abiding by the rules and jurisdiction, he is. But when they don't give a fuck about his ID? He's made his objections known, and it's time to comply. Let the courts sort it out and give him a big payday from the taxpayer.
