I had a chance to tour the Lockheed Martin F-35 factory and meet with 3 of the top experts in the world. The factory is incredible, there are over 200 F-35's being built simultaneously. Give it a watch and let me know what you want to see next in the comments.

Awesome video, man! Most favorite thing i learned from this is that part about the Lockheed engineers using 80486 microprocessor for F-22's!! Freakin 486's and created a legend like the F-22! Thats just insane. Thank you, Hasard!

@@johnpeasant7859 Oh I think I could've phrased my sentence better, I meant for the purpose of design formulation, simulation and such developmental aspects. Not using them in the jet. @@johnpeasant7859 True. the F22 has/had a 700 mips processor. That's quite good back then. They had plans to update to 2000 mips. (but the CPU and chip set is long out of production). On the other hand? Your wally mart budget smart phone for less then a $100? Well, even the lower 4 core snap dragon running at 1.4ghz? it has 4 of them. So, cheap $80 smartphone = 5700 mips F22: 700 So that smart phone has about 8 times the mo-jo (processing) as the F22. (the f22 actually about maybe a first gen Pentium - the next chip sets that came after the 486. But, yes, computer power today has come a very long way. The F35 uses the Power-pc chip set from IBM. It is the same architecture used by the Lawrence Livermore labs when they run computer simulations of nuclear bomb explosions'. It also the same chip sets used by IBM for their Artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Needless to say, the F35 does not lack computer power (or better said - will not!!!). They are rolling out a new CPU next year for all F35's. It will increase memory, and also increase processing by a whopping 25 times (times - not %!!!!).

I love how the engineer is an immigrant from Cuba. I recently saw on a video how a Vietnamese immigrant felt a duty to the USA for letting her and her family immigrate here. She’s now a top-notch scientist who develops some of the most technologically advanced bombs in the world. She was instrumental in developing a bomb that went after Osama Bin Laden in the caves of Afghanistan. I wish that my grandparents were still alive so that I can thank them for immigrating to the USA. It wasn’t an easy transition, but all their kids, and their kids, and so forth, are all so fortunate because of the sacrifices that they made for better lives.

The F-35 has multiple back up flight control systems. Theres no way all of them can fail without catastrophic damage to the jet in which case youd already be going for the handle anyways. If the engine fails its like every other single engine aircraft engine out procedure ever. Best glide speed, best place to land, checklist.

Well, the same as any modern air craft. They all use computers - and the F16 had computers between the pilot and control surfaces. So, I can't say there really much difference here. The main difference is as they noted. The F35 can manage airframe stress in real time. This results in some VERY weird and counter intuitive control surface movement. For example, the pilot can be pulling up hard on the stick. The wings thus want to bend up-wards. So the computer looks around and says, hum, how can I bend the wings back down? So it in fact turns the trailing surfaces (elevators on wings) in the OPPOSITE direction! (the control surfaces are now pointing up-wards - trying to bend the wing back down!!! - as a result, airframe loads are lower, and you don't bend the wings. The overall wing is producing lots of lift but you need a invisible hand to press DOWN on the wings to reduce bending loads - and that what the F35 does (and so does the f22 - but the F35 more advanced in that area). This is a VERY counter intuitive operation. A long time f22 test pilot explains how this works - and it is a REAL EYE opener as to how flight control software now manages airframe stress. Video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGGZaZmboZKKb6s

The GAU-22/A is a 4 barrel version of the GAU-12/U. One of the most high quality and most reliable guns ever put in a aircraft. Each barrel has it own breach. So there is not one breach that each barrel turns in line with, but each barrel has it own. They they last longer, work better and distribute the firing heat and loads over each barrel. The AC-130U "Spooky" flying gun ship uses the same gun barrels. barrels - (GAU-12) a 5 barrel version of the 4 barrel version used in the F35. The Harrier also uses this Gun. And the Marine Corps LAV-AD air-defense vehicle also uses the same barrels. It is for all puns intended? Bulletproof. The GAU-22/A is lighter and has a reduced rate of fire of 3,300 rounds per minute And the technical specs (accuracy) in mumbo jumbo rating? (from Wikipedia). *_maintains the same, high accuracy of 5 milliradians, 80% circle of the GAU-12 and A-10's GAU-8_* So the gun is 100% on the money. The reported accuracy of the F35 is NOT the gun issue. The issue is that when you fire the gun, it imparts forces on the F35. (twists the aircraft due to the forces like when you fire any gun - the so called recoil). This torque issue was addressed with software (the flight control surfaces have to move and counter the gun forces to keep the gun on target). So, the issue was NEVER a poor quality gun - the gun is noted for being one of the best ever made in terms of quality, reliability and accuracy. The other issue? They have to align it correctly. From Lockheed: *_In the F-35A integral gun, we have implemented software updates and installed a field gun alignment aid to ensure proper gun barrel position. We tested this in December and the results were improved accuracy."_* So this is not a high priority item - guns seldom used. However, the issue was NEVER the gun, it was ensuring the alignment was correct in the first place, and that of adding software to adjust to the changes in forces in the jet that can reduce accuracy. >>afterburner damaging the rear? Old issue - addressed 10 years ago in 2011!!! *_Vice Adm. Mat Winter, who leads the F-35 program on behalf of the Pentagon, told Defense News that the department has taken steps to mitigate the problem with an improved spray-on coating, but added that the government will not completely fix it - instead accepting additional risk_* That coating is a new ceramic based paint that can withstand the higher temperatures. And, NOTE very careful this statement: *_Winter noted that the issue was documented while the jet was flying at the very edge of its flight envelope. He also said the phenomenon only occurred once for both the B and C models, despite numerous attempts to replicate the conditions that caused the problem_* Read above again: *_He also said the phenomenon ONLY OCCURED ONCE for both the B and C models, despite NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS to replicate the conditions that caused the problem_* So, it is NOT a wide spread problem. And NOTE ALSO they NEVER saw the issue with the F35 “A” model. So, no, this is not a big deal, or issue. And note that story and information is 10 YEARS old!!! - from 2011. So, no this is not an issue or problem with the F35. And this: *_Greg Ulmer, Lockheed Martin’s F-35 program head, said there have been no cases of this problem occurring in the operational fleet and that incidents have been limited to the “highest extremes of flight testing conditions that are unlikely replicated in operational scenarios.”_* And Winter goes on to state this: *_The new coating, which was introduced in Lot 8, allows the jet to withstand hotter temperatures caused by the afterburner, the documents stated. Winter characterized the material as able to withstand “what we call the thermal shock wave,”_* So, you talking about an issue that cropped up 10 years ago, and has LONG been dealt with. All of the last multiple sets of LOT production numbers have these changes.

Couple of questions: why the F22 is the only major twin-engine fighter jet made in the US and why the F35 is only a single engine? Also, about a year or so ago, my country of Bulgaria purchased 4, I think, F16 Block 70 jets and prepaid them in advance and we have about 3-4 years until their arrival. There was quite a lot of backlash about how the deal was structured. Is this a normal procedure in your opinion for countries that purchase US jets for the first time or our government was just hoping to buy themselves US support? Still, well done on the awesome channel and I hope my country will be able to buy F35s one day too.
@Albertkallal
@Albertkallal 3 жыл бұрын
Twin engines are used for power. They are not used for reasons of having two engines = more reliability. In Gulf war, we saw the best up-times and MOST work (sorties) done by the single engine F16. So if you fly 50 jets, do you want to maintain 100 engines? but then again, if one engine does not give enough power, then you install two engines. The F35 engine is the most powerful engine EVER put in a fighter jet - but it only has one of them!! However, even with one engine, it has more power and EVEN a better power to weight (thrust to weight) rating then the F16, or in fact even compared to the Rafale (which has two engines). the power to weight ratings are thus this: (higher number = better) Fuel Rafale F35 F16 18250 0.8038 0.8776 0.7729 15000 0.8707 0.9399 0.8447 12000 0.9431 1.0058 0.9239 10362 0.9880 1.0459 0.9737 9125 1.0249 1.0784 1.0151 7500 1.0777 1.1242 0.9239 7000 1.0950 1.1391 1.0950 5000 1.1704 1.2028 1.1826 3500 1.2341 1.2555 1.2581 2500 1.2806 1.2932 1.3141 700 1.3737 1.3672 1.4284 Note how with 12,000 lbs of fuel, the F16 and the Rafale do NOT have enough power to fly straight up, but the F35 does. You have to burn the fuel down to 3500 lbs in the F16 to match the T/W of the F35. The Rafale has to burn its fuel tanks down to near bone dry (700 lbs) to match the power and T/W rating of the F35. >why the F22 is the only major twin-engine fighter jet made in the US The new F15ex model, = duel engine. The new Super F18's = duel engine. Now the F15 is not really a new jet, but the Super F18's is MOST certainly a whole brand new airframe - and it is duel engine. Typhoon: Duel engine Rafale: duel engine. So you are correct that MOST of the higher end fighter jets are duel engine. The F35 is one exception to this rule, but it keeps the cost down, keeps the maintains down, gets better fuel economy, and as the above chart shows, it produces as good (in fact better) power to weight performance then the F16, and in fact the Rafale. I not run the above numbers for the Super F18's, but they now have a LOT more power then the older F18's.

@@dimitarmargaritov Well, a ban from 31 years ago does not really apply in todays world. I mean, back then, you could not export a computer with more then 486 power. Back then, even simple spools of fiber optic cables were banned for export. I mean, they never exported the F22 since they stopped production way too soon. So how can you sell something that you not making? (you can't). And the air force did not even get 200 f22's - once again, how do you sell something when the air force can't spare any copies? Some silly 30+ year ago law in a time when many things from computers, to simple rolls of fiber optic cables were banned is LONG AGO history. The F35 has far more technology, a lower RCS, and far better technology. I mean a $100 smart phone has about EIGHT TIMES the computer processing in a F22. But, had f22 production continued, then say simple things like selling computers, rolls of cable, or the F22 would have been sold to other nations. Times have LONG changed since that old law - and the USA was not willing to export stealth jets. Today they are. The F22 was never exported since they stopped building them, and they had no copies to spare. You can't sell something you not making. the F35 is vastly superior to the F22. The only area that the F22 does better is it has a higher performance envelope. But that extra performance will not help the f22 to increase kills in the battle theater, or enable the f22 to engage and take on a F35. It just that the F22 missed too many technologies. The really unfortunate missing feature in the F22 was lack of IRST. They are looking for ways to add this to the F22, but without such systems, the F22 is really handicapped, and thus really has few if any means to passive track enemy jets.

so i wonder how many extra electronic components the government will buy to stop from needing to take components from one airframe to make another fly in a few years. spares.. and how repairable will the modules be.. are they going to be made like new automotive electronic controls and NOT REPAIRABLE must replace with NEW.. but if new are not available ... what do they do in the future..

It been a problem for a long time. I mean, do you think the CPU and chip sets for a older F16, or even f22 can be had with ease? A good number of those systems were built 40 years ago. So, it not a new problem. At least with the F35? They moved more of the systems to a open software architecture. This means you can for example swap out the CPU system - much like you can with a PC. So, for example, the f22 has quite a old and low power CPU. It is rated at 700 mips. (about that of a first gen Pentium processor). They had plans to upgrade to 2000 mips processor, but the chip sets used are long out of production. To get an idea of 700 mips? Well, you low cost smartphone has about 5600 mips (low end Android phone). The higher end phones are significantly more. So, that $80 smart phone has a whopping EIGHT times the processing power of the F22. The F35? Well, they are swapping out the CPU's starting next year - and will add about 25 times increase (not 25%, but 25 times!!!). So the F35 allows updates to software and allows updates to the CPU system with FAR greater ease then older jets. The often used flip phone vs smartphone is a good example. You can update the software and features with great ease in a new phone - older phones architecture did not allow this. The chip set in the F35 is based on IBM's power PC architecture. This is the same chip set that IBM uses for their Artificial inteligance systems, and is also the same systems that the Lawrence Livermore atomic bomb labs super computers use for running computer simulations of atomic bomb explosions. So the newer systems are FAR more modular, and have far more options to software and hardware updates. But, be it a F18 built in 1990 (31 years ago), then the basic computer chip sets can certainly become hard to find. I actually don't know how they find and get say a new CPU for a f22, or say a older F18. The first fighter jet to have a semiconductor based computer on a chip? It was the F14 tom cat - (1970). So, this does become much like how do you go and find a 30 year old computer - can it get it to boot and run today????

Yes, in nearly every way. Finland did a test with rafale, eurofighter, f35 and other jets and selected the F35 as it matched or beat every other jet in every other category (except price). You could take out a squadron of rafale with a single f35 so its pointless in 5th gen warfare to invest in 4th gen jets.
