I think people just really don't play around it properly. You often see people straight run into the critical spots of his q, the kennen basically committed suicide by hashinshin for the first five minutes. Aatrox still does damage, but it's so item and area dependent, in my opinion they have just made the damage outside the critical spots too low. It should still be dangerous to be inside it, to prevent people from walking inside and beating you down with autos, which is incidentally the most annoying thing when playing Aatrox. I'm lost as to what he is even supposed to be, before he felt like a lane bully, now he feels useless until you have bc and dd, even then I could be playing illaoi and likely doing better with the same build. For a guy swinging around a huge sword the impact feels pretty meh when it actually hits.

did math for ryze fullbuild with elixer active on seraphs, roa, void staff, d-cap, boots, hextech glp and got this. 826 ap and 5,228 mana. I rebounded the mana to ap looping only once, from seraphs to passive once and no re-loops. empowered q is 1,264 damage.

If you get caught by a bruiser that isn't called riven then your spacing is likely to blame, even if they have all the movespeed in the world then you have a thresh to deny any engage they try and make. Honestly even removing the amount of slows in the game wouldn't make a difference now. Most bruisers have a very linear engage option, they run at you and if they catch you then yeh you probably die. But given Caitlyn, Ezreal, and Kai sa are popular, good luck ever getting a chance to do that. Bruisers already do less damage then assassins, who have an easier time getting to you in the first place. Explain to me why Caitlyn should be able to three shot me through tabi and a chain vest, with high base hp and two hp items on Darius, with no chance of me ever getting through her support unless they seriously misplay. If you flash she can just trade flash and then e, good luck ever reaching her after that, same with Ezreal and Kai sa. The amount of damage in the game is so high, this poke you are talking about is taking half someones hp bar in one or two crits with ie and pd. AP champions simply have zhonyas which prevents any meaningful engage, do similar damage while cutting your healing, can one shot you through an mr item, and likely have incredibly long range with at least one CC. The only reason bruisers get to win in either of these examples is by bad mistakes made in the positioning of ones character. It is not fun or engaging gameplay to be consistently poked down, instakilled, or generally be unable to hit anyone as a melee champion. Bruiser damage is just fine, everyone elses is pretty nuts i.e. being burst combo 100 to 0 by annie support. There needs to be a way to mitigate long range poke or reduce damage dealt to bruisers, otherwise they will forever be useless.

well yes ryze is pretty much the strongest combat dd in the game but he has a very short range and cant do anything against a slightly well positioned team. his overtuned combat is pretty much nonexistent in good lobbies so ryze player have to fully rely on his macro potential which is very good as well, but nothing too crazy. i can see the logic behind riots decision to overbuff his damage and overall combat against low skilled enemies to fight his extremly low winrate in lowelo where players dont understand macro play and cant make use of a champ which biggest strength is the macro play.
