Hashirama was very patient with Madara, giving him chance after chance, while Tobirama advised to be more ruthless. In the end Madara tried to destroy the Leaf and Hashirama killed him (or thought so), so it was concluded that Tobirama's view was correct. Tobirama's students Hiruzen inherited Hashirama's good will and patience, which led to bad things as he wasn't ruthless enough with Orochimaru and Danzo. Danzo inherited Tobirama's pragmatism and ruthlessness, which led to Uchiha massacre and Sasuke becoming what he turned into. Sasuke is correct in thinking that all of the past kage are at fault for the current state of affairs. Except maybe Minato, bro died too early to be involved in politics, this mess has nothing to do with him.

Tobirama's approach with the Uchiha is an example of correctly identifying problems but wrongly identifying solutions. While he correctly understands that the Uchiha harbor a troubled history largely owing to their inborn abilities and can thus be unpredictable, he wrongly extrapolates that observation onto the entire clan and their future, expecting them to become a hazard unless corralled into a position where the village could manage and surveil them directly while still benefitting from their talents. The term "soft bigotry of low expectations" probably applies here. Had he allowed the Uchiha to attain any position in the village based on merit and character instead of forcing them into a ready-made role based on their surname, he would have successfully dispersed them across the various functions of the village and allowed them to integrate into the village with less stigma. Madara has a point when he says Hashirama has got his priorities upside down. As Hokage, Hashirama came to believe that the village is of supreme importance, somewhat forgetting that it's the bonds between the people of the village that really matter, and what made the village possible in the first place. This ideology of village supremacy would be shared by the rest of the villages and, eventually, reignite the flames of war.

Na, tobirama was right to make them the police. See generally before the creation of police states like now, they were considered great honorable positions. The people already hated the uchiha, so by making them the law enforcement, it prevented legal discrimination against themand provided great opportunity to change the way they were perceived. Thata stupid smart, because in the old days, most laws were few and good, so they always seemed like they were stopping villans. That is, if they weren't corrupt. Were never told any details on what the uchiha had issue with, its vauge. The 1 issue was confinment....but they got to live with their people however they wanted, no discrimination, and ot was done because of the 9 tails attack, which was the fault of an uchiha. I know its deliberately vauge because its supposed to show that everybody is truly in the wrong and theirs no "oppressed people"bs, that its a symptom of the system, cycle of hatred and uchiha curse. The isolation of the Uchiha was implemented under Tobirama's rule. By the time of the 9-tails attack, Tobirama was long dead, and his successor was already an old man. Even if the attack had been the reason for their confinement, nobody knew Obito was behind it, and none of the Uchiha even knew of Obito's continued existence, which means the basis for the confinement would have been a rumor at best. Even if they'd known it was Obito, his actions wouldn't necessarily have reflected the views and goals of the clan. Without conclusive evidence that the Uchiha were in cahoots with Obito, punishing them in his stead would have been absolutely unjust.

@foreighteen7797 bro you gotta summarize. Let me clarify. In the past most laws weren't bs arbitrary regulations that affected people's day to day like now. If it was illegal, it was probably heinous. So as a rule in most cultures police are looked up to. They created peace and order. Yes, they were discriminated against in 1 facet. Now go look at all the other laws throughout history that were placed on hated groups. The uchiha were guaranteed to be free of them all. The other clans didn't get the freedom the uchiha had, so they were above the law, simply by having a corner of the village to themselves and by being the cops. Nepotism was the point. Everyone hated the uchiha, so people would deliberately harass and selectively enforce laws against them if the police were based on tests. Tobirama wanted to make certain that the uchiha had political power in the village they founded IN SPITE OF THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE. Finally I was wrong on the timing, the uchiha had extra surveillance and less trust after the 9 tails incident. Rightfully because people knew the uchiha already had greivences and were mentally unstable and were the only group to control the 9 tails in the past. They knew it wasn't an accident. When dealing with the near destruction of your military power, you don't give anyone the benefit of the doubt. The leaf is a military fortified city, so it's run just like any other military base.

Tobirama was definitely the reason that made Madara lose hope. That and the Uchiha tablet that gave him the motivation to pursue and achieve a new darker dream. Although it wasn't only because of Tobirama but he made Madara realize that if Tobirama could still feel resentment toward him, it could be and would be the same for other people toward him and the Uchiha clan. That's what disillusioned him and made him understand the Uchihas were only tolerated by Hashirama and a part of the village. Anger and fear were still in people's hearts. Madara is clearly the more rational type so it naturally devasted him and made him come to the probably too radical conclusion that real peace was simply impossible despite the end of the wars. Hashirama was more hopeful but also too idealistic so he overshadowed people's actual feelings of resentment against the Uchiha clan. It's so tragic because Tobirama's attitude is very understandable, the Uchihas killed his brother but the dude just wasn't able to forget and live a peaceful life because he would see his former mortal enemies everywhere and every day. But it's this same resentment, anger and doubtful attitude that led to Madara's own hatred. Also there was the constant fear of the Sharingan because it can control Kurama, which is always a risk for the village. It's such a complicated but also very realistic problem. Hiruzen definitely messed up on every level though. Even when Minato looks at Hiruzen, you know something should be said about Naruto and how he treated him terribly. It became even worse with Itachi when the Uchihas decided to actually revolt against the village because the menace was now real.

I’m glad someone finally said this correctly. While Tobirama created inequities for the Uchiha (for understandable reason, but still unjust, I mean you’re not going to be buddies with the guys who slaughtered your family, cmon guys), the Uchiha still sowed their own fate. They did not have to set up a coupe and try to overthrow the Hokage! Tobirama cannot be held solely responsible for their actions. They made that choice (which Hiruzen should’ve tried harder to stop). Everyone seems to try to absolve Hashirama (because he’s the cool guy) but it is partially because of his naïveté that caused this too. As Tobirama stated, just because Madara is your BFF doesn’t mean you can just unilaterally make him Hokage. Hashirama was boldly blinded by his dream and his friendship. It was not until their final valley battle that he came to begin to realize that he was always giving Madara a pass. He even still didn’t fully get it until he was reanimated. Madara being exactly like Tobirama instead of being the bigger person is equally as guilty. Two wrongs don’t make a right. He could’ve easily tried to democratically work it out with Hashirama (during the stone tablet scene) and I believe even Tobirama could’ve been reasoned with but instead chose to be hard headed! The three of them are ALL part of the problem. To be honest, Hokages 1-3 + Madara all played a bad hand. Thats it from me. lol Thanks for listening to me rant. 😅

That's totally true! Tobirama is just very realistic at the end of the day. His reasons are understandable. You're not going to be friend with the guy who slaughtered your family, but yet that's what Hashirama authentically tried to do because it was the only way. At least get rid of the anger if not friends. It was just harder for Tobirama on his side just like it was for Madara. They're very similar in the end. The Uchihas still have their part of responsibility in this. Itachi wouldn't have had to murder them all if they could have let go of their rebellion cause he was capable of seeing the full picture and not simply stay on the side of his own clan and family. But even the Uchihas are understandable. They were treated differently because of their terrifying powers and potential for destruction. Obito will reinforce the fears of the village against the clan by destroying the entire village and manipulating Kurama. Hiruzen should definitely have tried harder. But in the same way, at the same time I can't totally blame him. He was just one men who inherited this whole situation and Danzo was acting in the shadows at the same time. I think nobody would have liked to be in his position. It was so much to handle. But he left everything on Itachi which is clearly unacceptable too. I think most people try to excuse Hashirama because in the end, despite everything, he had the right mindset contrary to others and even his own village. But the problem is he was such an ideal to reach and others couldn't be as strong as he was and let go of their past to live in peace so easily. Even for Tobirama, he just couldn't endure as much as his big brother. Same for Madara. Hashirama's error was to naively believe that others could simply forgive for a better future like he was able to. He should have been more attentive to how Tobirama felt and discuss about Madara and the Uchiha clan with him. But it's Itachi who gave us the answer to Hashirama's biggest mistake. The hokage should be decided by the people and not be promoted to then win people's trust. They accepted Hashirama as their hokage because he worked so hard for his dream of peace and did so much for the people who live in Konoha. It wasn't the case for Madara yet. He had to win people's trust through his actions first. Hashirama naively believed that everyone would accept Madara simply because he would become the hokage. It was probably too complicated to understand for Hashirama and Madara at the time. There was no hokage prior to that after all. As soon as Madara had read the stone tablet, it was already almost too late because he lost hope for peace in Konoha and had a new more seducing objective in mind. Tobirama was the one who provided harsh realities to Hashirama to shoulder him but he also needed to believe and be more hopeful and chill himself. He was so hard headed in nature but I'm sure his brother could have reasoned him too if he could have been more attentive to the fact that Tobirama and people with a similar mindset by extension were a part of the problem. All the hokages + Madara definitely have their part of responsibility in this story, even Hashirama even though he had the best intentions. There is no singular reason as to how things came to be. Multiple factors make up the events. Madara's plan, Tobirama's good intentions but not so good exections, Obito's existance, Hiruzen not truly stepping up as hokage in political devides, Minato's death (as he said he would have tried to avoid it if he were still alive)... On the topic of Minato, isn't it a bit weird that Sasuke had nothing to say to him or ask of him?

Well, that makes sense. Minato was Hokage just for a couple of years, maybe five, and really didn't nothing important for the village in that time in terms of Politic and village wellness. The other threee Hokage besides have ruled for several years, going through three wars and lived so many life experience that Minato can't keep on. Remember, Minato died probably 27 or less. Hashirama died in is old age, same has Hiruzen. Tobirama probably around is 40.

​@@ajddf2227 The flaw can be explained by the fact that he activated izanagi during the battle regardless of the outcome, and since he was a full-fledged uchiha unlike danzo, he could cover more timespan with a single izanagi cast, whereas danzo had 1 minute per eye. So think of it like this: - uchiha blood = more izanagi time, but lots of years to wait for a recast. - senju blood = less izanagi time, but faster recovery for a recast.

Funny that, to this day, people can't seem to either let go of their fanboyism towards the Uchiha (even when they did many unsavory things with no prompt from anyone - though Kishimoto went out of his way to present them as the biggest victims of the story) or still try to use the old "oppressed vs oppressors" in order to explain the massacre. So let's analyze things from a very objective point, using only what the manga/anime gives us: 1- Tobirama hated the Uchiha No, he didn't. He even had a trusted Uchiha subordinate, Kagami. But coming from the era of Warring States, of course he hadn't completely forgotten how the Uchiha can be nasty at their worst. Plus, Hashirama wanted to outright make Madara Hokage by himself, while Tobirama points out that, as a village, they need to decide things democratically. Hashirama alone shouldn't determine who's supposed to become Hokage. Plus Madara was basically eavesdropping a private conversation between two brothers. He wasn't exactly in the right. 2- The Police Force was made to subjugate the Uchiha No, it wasn't. There's not even a shred of evidence to prove that, and the sources who claim it was aren't the most unbiased themselves (Orochimaru had an axe to grind with the village for the longest time, so you can't take his word at face value). Plus they operated extremely well up until the Nine-Tails attack (which, like it or not, it *was* caused by an Uchiha). 3- Madara was slighted Again, he wasn't. Remember Oonoki's flashback, when Madara goes directly behind Hashirama's orders and outright states the Stone will submit and he shouldn't even say Hashirama's name within earshot of him? That already implies Madara was undermining Hashirama from behind the scenes (since, at the very least, that scene is supposed to happen before Madara leaves the village, considering he was still wearing his headband at that time). Again, he was even eavesdropping a private conversation. And Tobirama didn't even say something offensive; he only confirmed that, as a democracy, people should choose the Hokage. As he pointed out, even the Uchiha members weren't on board with Madara's plans. The whole mess started when Madara himself started attacking the village as a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy. 4- The Uchiha Massacre was X's fault No. There were a lot of factors contributing to that. Between Madara's attacks, Tobirama's policies, Hiruzen's inability to be stern when he needed to be, Danzou's schemes, Obito's latest attack on the village, it was bound to happen. The Uchiha clan was already gung ho about taking over the village while Fugaku was trying his damnedest to rein them in. The Elders only decided for the extermination when it was clear there was no way around it, and the Uchiha were, indeed, willing to get bloody. While Danzou didn't help matters, Itachi's handling of the situation wasn't exactly graceful, either. He claimed that he didn't kill Sasuke due to him being a child and not into the plans, so are we led to believe every other child of the clan was in the plan? Also he decided to ask for Obito's help, who already had an ax to grind with both clan and village and, indirectly, allowed him to obtain a ton of eyes for his laboratory under a promise of not attacking the village. Well, we've seen how well that turned out to be. Problem is, people are too quick to whitewash any heinous actions the Uchiha committed during the series due to rule of cool and Draco in leather pants. For someone who wanted his brother to be a hero, Itachi didn't have any problem beating him up and putting him into Tsukuyomi twice, undoing any mental healing he was undergoing as a member of team 7. Obito also did a lot of uncalled for things like killing the original Akatsuki members, killing Konan and pushing Sasuke even deeper into evil. Sasuke himself ditched his whole team and even tried to kill Karin. Yet most of these actions are either ignored or glossed over because people still adhere to "the Uchiha were oppressed" malarkey.

The most tragic part about this is Madara actually did want the village just as much as Hashirama yet izuna made him promise not too.. then madara goes against that and ends up being a naruto leveled outcast in a village he helped found. History probably would have been different if not for tobirama's meddling and the all the villagers including the uchiha being afraid of and avoiding someone that wanted to protect them. Imo anybody wouldve abandoned the village in those conditions. Especially with rhe tobirama thing. Your brothers murderer really just talked your only friend into back tracking on making madara hokage. All of the villagers suspicion and hatred for madara never stopped then he had the hokage title dangled in front of him to only realize the Uchiha would be eventually exterminated if they stay... which eventually passed because they betrayed madara when he tried to warn them.
