What can you say, by observing a hat, about its owner?
Well, this is the answer (from 2'08'') to how some conclusions about the owner are inferred.

my deduction would run something like this: "Well... I can say that the man... is currently... not in possesion of this hat."

I love how The Empty Hearse made a reference to this, with Sherlock making deductions about a hat based on its size (and Mycroft correcting him)

With a possible exception of a few, every live actor who has portrayed Holmes has always impressed me. This leads me to believe that the director of each film and television portrayal that has done so must have also read and enjoyed the stories when he or she was a child. Ergo, it is possible to make a movie about a book character with complete and utter respect to the source material.

I know this dialogue by heart, that many times I saw it! And how I love his "R" when he says "reason" at 0:44 or "ribbed" at 2:34 :)

@changingowl10 But the task is to describe the owner, not the hat itself. But you might say the owner likes round... and... black hats.... with red linings.
@theFishy70
@theFishy70 12 жыл бұрын
Technically he is not the master of induction or deduction but of abduction. However, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Mistakenly used the term deduction to describe Holmes's method of reasoning.
@SlickVoyager
@SlickVoyager 12 жыл бұрын
@ZEEECHET Actually technically it's more like abduction, inference to the best explanation. From the premise that a given hypothesis provides a better explanation for the evidence than any other hypothesis, you conclude that the hypothesis is true.

@wootytootylemonfruit Ha ha! very funny. However My girlfriend's tastes tend exclusively toward the living. This I have ascertained via careful observation of her habits. And, since the brilliant Mr. Brett no longer fits within this category, it would seem highly dubious that she would dump me for him. Consider also that, while I lack a few of these items, I do possess more of them than any other who's company she keeps, and this possession includes the hat, the cane . . .

. . . and the quick wits (I do not number modesty among the virtues). Therefore, despite stray considerations to the contrary I deduce that I will never leave the house with an unbrushed hat, and I will entertain said notion as a working hypothesis. P.S. How was that? :)

@DarthNaver1 In your shoes, I'd acquire: British accent Monocle Hat Cane Money Quick Wits And a nifty can of that 'Liquid Sex' stuff, I hear the kids these days are raving about it... Otherwise, there's a more than slight chance she's dumping you for Mr Brett. Or, someone with the aforementioned items. . .

I don't think I understand the last point. What was the point about gas in a house? And how do candle stains prove whatever it is?
@ssehe2007
@ssehe2007 5 ай бұрын
If he had a gas system laid out he could illuminate his home at night using gas lights. Repeated candle stains indicates that he instead depends on candle light.

I am a Holmes fan, however this particular abduction by Holmes (certainly not a deduction, except for some parts), is certainly rather bad. There are many equally suitable explanations for many of the features of the hat, and at least one of the inferences is rather bad. For instance, there is no sound scientific evidence linking the size of a man's head to his intellect; even though, at the level of species, there is some evidence that the skull-body ratio tells something about intellect.

Hogwash. The hat might have been an expensive gift, and the goose may have been for his sister. Or other affectionate relative. And a head size does not correlate with intellectual curiosity.
