I like the idea that you have to date Alan Smiths anecdotes based on how developed his chemical weapons program is. "I was 16 at the time..." "Ah, post-Anthrax." I also love the dissonance between "Don't give money to the homeless, they might have issues and do drugs!" and "It might be justifiable for someone to kill a baby with a hammer, they might have mental issues so we should empathise with them!"

As an anxious woman, i find it quite unsettling when anyone approaches me

I once found 30 quid in soho just on the street. I then shouted out 'I JUST FOUND 30 QUID!' to 2 of my mates and then a random crackhead came out of nowhere and snatched it out of my hand. Felt like total shit that whole evening.

I grew up in an Arabic family and country as a young child. There are so many superstitions as part of the culture that's bordering on bad omens. For example, throwing something in the dark. My grandma used to tell me it will hit a djin and it will possess you or as you might have seen it if you live on the uk or went to an Arabic country. A blue pendent shaped in a hand with an eye in it. It's basically to ward off evil eyes. I never understood these superstition. We get taught to pray for protection and have faith in god to protect us, we the culture is based so much around these superstitions which just counter the whole point of faith and belief that God will protect you 😅😅 never made sense to me. Another crazy on is eating with your left hand. I was told as a child that if I used my left hand, I will be feeding the devil. As a little, this was quite traumatising to accidently use my left hand and think I just fed this mythical monster built up in my imagination.

It's very difficult to condemn religion but support superstition or the other way around two go hand in hand. "I should do this because a mythical power I can't see or prove will like me for it and reward me" is the backbone of being superstitious and religious. But at the same time, I will say "bless you" and avoid ladders because it's culturally reinforced. Not that I believe either will make a difference, its just part of culture.

@@SaintPhoenixx Haha.. Yeah, it just never made much sense to me. Like I have met so many Arabs including my family who say a prayer before driving a car for example. But they have the evil eye amulet hanging off of their rear view mirror and also some have a "magic" ward with a bunch of nonsense roots and herbs and a piece of paper... Like wtf... Man... religion, it's just a mess isn't it, and maybe it's not just religion, just people's backward beliefs and what they twist into rules.. Anyways, I still love my culture and I respect people who have their own beliefs. But as I grow older, I find it more and more difficult to listen to these things. Off topic, if you're interested. Ask a Muslim about Saydna Adam wa Saydetna Hawa'a, just ask, if they were the first to be put on earth with all the knowledge of humanity, then how do you explain cavemen? I am betting you, each one will come up with another random reason or they will say, it's god's will and we shouldn't ask.

I don't think anyone is under the illusion that giving a homeless man some change is going to save his life. It is, of course a complex systemic issue and just like we won't save the planet by recycling, we can't end homelessness ourselves either. There are plenty of people with or without homes who struggle with mental illness. There are lots of people where I'm from who are more than happy to buy some local bum a beer as long as they are not disrespectful or harassing folks.

"So you'd compare that to superstition" It's exactly what superstition is about. Superstition is a personification of safety rules. For instance, 7 years of bad luck for breaking a mirror. Back when mirrors were silvered (or mercury'd?) glass it makes sense why it's dangerous to break a mirror. The glass used wouldn't be safety glass. You'd be cutting your hands and possibly bleeding out. Walking under ladders? It's easy to not be clumsy if you're not in a very cramped space. The chances of you tripping and injuring yourself and whoever is using the ladder goes up dramatically if you're walking through it rather than around it. Plenty of superstitions have other meanings (black cats being a sign of witches -> devil worshipers), but even then you can possibly reverse engineer a sort of hazard meaning out of them from a pre-scientific time.

The same could be said of religious tenetes! Its been argued that a lot of abrahamic rules, laws or beliefs could be boiled down to good advice at the age it was originally created, historically speaking. Things such as "don't eat meat' whether its beef, pork and so on could have been based on it being good advice to avoid it because of poor quality meat or wide spread viruses and such. Not to say that all religious teachings had to have been based on hard logic or reason I think thats not the point, but I agree with you that its not a bad thing to have had them necessarily

@SaintPhoenixx Жыл бұрын
Same, but also because I never carry cash. If I go into a shop and there's a homeless guy outside (happens semi-regularly at the shop round the corner), I'll buy them a Coke and a sandwich or something. Its such a pain in the ass to get cash out and spend some to get change etc.
@mat6732 Жыл бұрын
I've personally understood it that giving them money that could fuel a possible addiction whether its drinking or other substances isn't so cut and dry. On the one hand it could possibly be a contributing factor to their current situation, but on the other hand? It is fucking impossibly difficult to live on the streets and sleep through the night and substances like that are for so so many homeless people the only thing that keeps them alive and asleep. It is such a big part of survival for them and at the end of the day I won't begrudge you for having that kind of cynicism - its all such a fucked situation. Like ross said I guess, a tenner won't change their lives but if it gets them through the day its better than nothing at all. We can only trust that they can make do, the rest is up to voting, protesting and proper care in the way of legislation and such
