I'm 44. My mom read this to me when I was I kid. I read it to youngest daughter when she was a senior a few years ago, and I'm reading (listening) right now for our next family colloquium. If you like these kinds of stories, you may enjoy Deep Survival; Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why. It's a compilation of survival stories like this, and they ate all true. From plane crashes, boats sinking, lost in the mountains, mountaineering accidents, snowmobiling incidents, etc. It's amazing how sometimes those you would think would live sometimes don't, and those you think would die actually live! (And you can learn what you'd need to know and do to live in ANY situation). Good luck with your school assignments. If you're not enjoying the book now, because you have to read it for school, try reading it again as an adult. You may find you really enjoy it. I can relate, though. I remember feeling that way about Silas Marner! (I still can't stand The Scarlet Letter, though!)

This is one my favorite books. Brian is very likable and sympathetic. The way Paulsen describes how Brian’s mental and physical health are effected by this is very well written. The boy has been through so much crap at this point and he realizes he can survive or complain and whine about it and face death. I also liked how he uses stuff he learned from movies and school to survive. I recommend anyone into survival stories to read this book. RIP Gary Paulsen.
