Hawks were used for processing firewood ie: small branches and twigs. Easy to replace handle if broken. Where as a axe was harder, unless you had a pioneer style of axe. A axe is the woods tool, a hawk was a survival tool and weapon. Good vid mate!

Well said. The original concept of the trade axe is lost on a lot of people. Once you understand it's role, it really excels.

I like the trail hawk because of the blade shape when you take it off the handle its good for skinning and scraping hide as well as being usefull for food prep and a few tasks as a carpentry tool

I have many hatchets, but I rarely use them for some reason. I think they look really cool, but I just prefer something heavier and with a longer handle. I do keep one in the garage to play with and use it as my “beater” when I’m just playing around. Maybe I’ll have to revisit them. Thanks for another great video!

It seems the pros and cons are what you would expect: hatchet has a fatter grind and longer bit, so splits better and sticks less, but tomahawk has power of longer handle and the thinner grind and shorter bit aid in carving. Being able to remove tomahawk head adds to its versatility, and the one-handed length and ability to remove more material made the hatchet better for carpentry. I think it just depends on what you prioritize. Seems an ideal might be something like the Rinaldi's boy's axe, i.e. a tomahawk style small axe.

Your very skillful use of both tools was impressive, making it difficult to choose between the two. I wish that you had finished carving the spoon with either or both tools. The tomahawk handle is removed much more easily; so I wrongly anticipated that you would use it to finish carving the spoon. Good video. Thanks for sharing.

You might be the first person on the internet to buck a log with a tomahawk lol I was surprised how well it did. I guarantee there’s going to be some fuss about how a saw ought to be used over a hand axe. I don’t do much carving, never needed to or wanted to. Obviously, an axe head of this size (wetterlings) would suit bushcrafters better on something a touch longer like the tomahawk. Both tools are plenty capable in the right hands. What do I know? lol.
@benscottwoodchopper6 жыл бұрын
Both tools are too anemic for serious firewood cutting but are nice enough to tuck into a belt and wonder around with, much better than a big knife imho. You should give carving a try, its pretty cool to be able to make your own spoons and people love them as gifts

A tomahawk is more veritile but less specialised. Always tradeoffs - A tomahawk, a large big blade is a great combo for survival use including self defense.

true yeah, there is a disparity in wieghts but in general most tomahawks are much lighter in head wieght as a rule. the same hehad wieght on longer handle will always win regardless

Regardless of the head size, give me a handle I can use with two hands. Honestly, I wouldn’t carry anything into the woods that was much less than 28”. Hatchets are only really good for that kind of hacking you did on the spoon, which I have no need or time for. Give me a 2-2.5 lb head with a 28”-30” handle and I’d go anywhere with that.
@benscottwoodchopper5 жыл бұрын
Yeah if I was purely interested in firewood I would take a small saw or a 2 handed axe. Hatchets are not firewood gathering tools
@KevinsDisobedience5 жыл бұрын
That really is all I’m interested in. For fuel to heat my house, and for fuel when I wild camp. I take the Husqvarna 28” 1.25 lb axe and a Silky saw when I camp. Otherwise, I’m using Hults Bruk 32” 3.5lb axe to fell and chop with, and Council Tools Velvicut boy’s axe to limb with. When splitting saw cut wood, I use a 4lb vintage Council I refurbished on a 32” handle. I’ve just never needed anything longer, and I’ve never wanted anything shorter than the Husky. Seems like we’ve come to similar conclusions about head weight and handle length through use. I wonder if real use will always yield similar results, or wether a man’s size and preference has more to do with it? Thanks for sharing your findings.

@@KevinsDisobedience I got one of those cold steel trail boss axes for Christmas and just cut off about 10 inches from it and sanded it down with some hempstring wrap for the overstrike guard. It's my favorite little 2 handed axe now.

I think the hatchet has the advantage because of the wedge shaped head design, the tomahawk is uniform thickness right up till the eye. The best of both worlds can be found In rinaldi's axes, tomahawk style handles but proper woodcutting heads in a range of wieghts from 250 grams to 1300 grams. I have a couple but this video by a friend shows it best kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIGmgIh6dtKdrtk
