Hello everyone!
Hope you all have been doing well. Just a llittle rant today about folks who like to judge gaming from the outside while they don’t play themselves.
It frequently frustrates me to no end. How do you guys deal with it?
Take care!

"When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” ― C.S. Lewis

I get that almost on a daily basis. Whenever I get involved in an argument on tiktok I invariably get the person I’m arguing with looking at my profile and making a comment about being ‘childish’ due to what they see. I tell them that their response shows they have no actual argument.

I used to run into this back in the 80's and 90's but it has become, generally, more accepted. I did find more of the negative comments when I lived in the Midwest but not so much out here in Washington. I have always felt sorry for folks who have stifled that creative spark and forgot the sense of play that we all need. Im in my late 50's and I dont see myself not playing anytime soon.

Every time I hear "That is for kids" no matter the specifics, I think: "You aren't grown up, you have just become dead inside". Playing, haveing fun in general is a fundamental part of being mentaly healthy. Not haveing a valve to release the pressure that an "adult" life brings with it is a setup to fail in life. No one ever can just go through life without a little sillyness on the side. For some this will be sport, some go danceing into the night, other play music and yes, some people awaken their inner child and play games and paint. Its all good. Everything of those things is fine. As for the specific topic of painting. I would ask those people to search for miniture painting contests online. There are some breathtaking works of art and then they should tell me that this is childs play.

Haters gonna be haters, and hate is more often than not found hand in hand with ignorance and tunnel vision. Just gotta stop acknowledging they even exist, and continue doing what you love.

I played DnD every weekend for over 6 years in the army. Obviously exclude deployments, but yeah. My on base housing was crammed with minis and terrain.

I think mileage may vary depending heavily on who you are. Bundok, while in the Marines, seems kind and soft-spoken, so I can see people being comfortable enough to tell her--"kindly"--that her hobbies are dumb and childish. I look like a cross between a biker and a former Marine (I'm not--I'm soft), so people don't tend to say much. I also keep high boundries, so the negative people don't tend to get in to say much. That all being said, as someone over 35, the average person has become a lot more cool with nerdy stuff in the last 5-10 years.

I will say, my narration voice is quite different than my every day speech. I was very surprised when one of my husband's friends said, "she sounds like she should be on NPR". (Which I think was a compliment.) It's funny; I've been around the block yet those who don't know me feel a bit more threatened and unwilling to say anything. Yet those who know where I've been and what I've done in my 29 years think I don't have an understanding on what's important or "priority for an adult". Maybe I just need to get an orc sleeve to get the message across haha.

I have found that being really socially awkward helps a lot. Also, when i show some nicely painted end products, folks kinda get it.

Currently 22, Thankful to have found on average interest with my painting and geeky hobbies. Most common responses are disinterest and the "im at work i have to pretend i care about my coworkers hobby" type of conversation.. Definitely noticed plenty of people who when I return the question of "what do you do away from work" reply with a dull "nothing really"

I keep some of my paints on my desk in the office. Luckily, the people that are interested speak kindly and the ones that aren't know better than to start anything. There's a strange recognition that comes with openness.

I had a coworker who was ecstatic about his hobby. He mowed his lawn everyday in the summer, then watched at least 5 hours of tv.

I use to hide being a geek, I remember being saying ohhhhh you play D&D ThA DeViLs Game 🙄 Now I truly don’t give those people time or to much energy. When you stop playing and imagining and dreaming that is when you grow old

I was always open about geekiness, but am luckily built to appear as a physical threat so peers never really said much haha. As I grow older though it now seems that commentary is being run. Oh well, I figure when I pass my estate sale will just be a collection of orc and beholder miniatures, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I found more negativity in my 20s, I’m in my 50s now and find that most people are interested and curious. I can’t remember the last time someone was negative to me about gaming.

It's funny to me because, individuals in my peer group (I'm still in my 20s for a few more months) don't voice anything against it, but those older seem to see it as "not growing up". Ironically, most of the people I actually game with are in their mid-30s to early 50s.

@@BundoksCavern I think the "grow up" stuff isn't related to age but what people experianced in life. Most likely they where either told that this is the "grown up" way or they had some hardship that forced them to change from child to "adult" before it was their time. Just act as if your hobby is the most normal thing in the world and show them that you can still work hard and take responsibilities like everyone else.

The person telling you it is childish is just being condescending. To me there is no difference between painting on a canvas vs a 3d object. You are being creative, and enjoying yourself. I am a grown man with kids and a desk job, and I show my minis to everyone that interacts with me. So far most have asked to play a round of dnd, and they like it. The people that dismiss your hobby are just being rude to put you down. They need to be nicer or they need to leave. Also nice paint job.

I’m glad you’re able to pull some folks into the dnd fold! And we’re working on the niceties; the person that said it to me is rather close, so I’m trying to reinforce just what this all means to me vs what their perception is.
