It's a public space that gets shows booked within because they're open to all forms of expression. People make art there, rehearse, and plenty of other things. It's been co-opted by the hardcore scene in town because it accommodates people well and it's right downtown in Philly

Genre bands are important to... fill out genres. Imagine if there was only one album (or hell, just one song if we want to take this to its logical end) in each style of music ever, wouldn't that be depressing every time you heard something you liked and wanted more in the same vein? It's not just acceptable to retread common ground, it's actively beneficial to the entire the medium. Obviously wildly experimental music is great too but this is an exceptionally idiotic and short-sighted take.
