Oh man, the fucking nostalgia. Zao was the one the most important bands in my life when I was a young high schooler, and a then zealous christian looking for absolutely anything counter christian culture, so metal and hardcore were a perfect fit, and I quickly fell in love with Zao, Living Sacrifice, Extol and many of the other usual suspects. Zao though fit a very special niche, and I remember even back then Dan talking about having panic attacks, and how terrible it is to have them. I remember thinking 'hmmm, glad I don't have those, that sounds awful' Well, I ended up having multiple panic attacks, and a pretty much full on break down in my late 30's. Just turned 40, and am atheist, and am living the best, healthiest, happiest, and most at peace life that I have ever lived. Not saying atheism is the key to happiness, by any stretch. No matter what pursuit you choose, you decide if it brings you joy or not. But yeah, Zao still fucking owns, and I love listening to them, and am so stoked for them that they have kept this band alive despite SO many odds against it. Keep it up my dudes. And Russ, you are a fellow Full Sail alum who I fucking love. Keep being you man.

i have a similar experience with them in my early days as well, only as an edgy atheist teen. i was looking for something spiritual that wasn't representative of what i disliked and was mesmerized by their early shit with sean jonas because of how explicitly heavy and passionate it was, even though some of the super right-leaning youth pastor style shit doesn't really hold up for me these days, their entire discography across both vocalists have this element of spirituality that is easy to relate to and extremely thought provoking.
Sac was our favortie, but Zao was for showing other christians that you weren't to be trifled with. It never worked, but that's how we used it.

I’m with you dude…been listening and going to shows since Splintered Shards…. If you came up in the scene when I did, you experienced one of the best times for hardcore/metal-core/math/metal/grind stuff. It rescued the few from “nu-metal” and I am so glad that it did. What a time to be alive. I also still keep Zao in the rotation and I’m 42.
