Most of the sound is projected in front of him so his ears are already pretty safe. At a small venue like above he probably doesn't even have the luxury of a monitor. I bet all he hears is the guitarist just like we do in the video.

@Rage Kage Ghost notes are that extra sauce that bring a beat to the next level. They're usually played on the snare drum, slightly quieter than the main beat being played (usually referred to as the "back beat"). A great example is what he starts playing at 2:29 . It's kinda hard to see, but if you listen closely you'll hear him playing a whole bunch of subtle notes around the "back beat" with his left hand on the snare drum. Stuff like that is what to me really shows passion for music and the desire to hone your craft, and just adds so much more depth and expression and groove to a beat. It's refreshing to hear in this genre cuz it's lacking a lot of times. What makes it even better is that he can also just absolutely flat out beat the drums into submission as well haha

Nice. What's cool is these drummers have a such a small basic drum kit, like here, your basic 4 piece, bass, snare, tom, and floor, with hi-hat, ride, and 2 crashes, and they're able to produce good shit. Just goes to show you, that you don't need a big, gigantic drum kit to play well.
