Good job. I guess the logic was, if you want to look outside just open the window!

It might have been good logic 80 years ago... not anymore lol too cold in winter and too hot in summer lol

Fascinating to watch. My bedside window no longer fits the frame as the house has tilted over the years, leaving gaps for the wind and rain to blow through. I can't close the windows fully, or even the storm shutters because everything is wonky. For now I'm using that spongey tape in the gaps 😄

It's been 20 years since I replaced glass panes, but it seems the price for glass is significantly higher there than Midwest US. Nice vid--and I saw you on Brandon's channel.

The price of glass is crazy. I'd love to change more glass but it's too costly when I have other things to do.

I have the glass that is frosted/blurred down low and becomes clear as they go up. Even at my height, I have to get on my toes just to see ouside a little bit. Kind of strange to have this instead of curtains with clear glass! Did they not want to see the countryside scenery? Mine are all wood frame and aren't screwed together so replacing them won't be quite so easy. However, I still want to.

It’s sad we have to pay good money to open the view in our houses. My house has the frosting and the owner had curtains lol like, why man? Wood frames, and small windows? The glass should be cheaper considering the size. You might be able to split the wood apart and change them… gotta be a way! Try it on a window you don’t care about lol

@@DIYJapan LOL! My house was the same way! They had old curtains hanging up, on top of the frosted/blurred windows -- in the country! What's with people? I guess they're scared the tanuki or monkeys doth know too much.

It's like country PTSD... maybe a bad event in the past? People had to hide their presence... who knows. But once a certain amount of people went in one direction, it seems, then the whole country followed with blurry ugly windows. But crazy it goes way back to houses even over a hundred years old now.

@@DIYJapan Country PTSD rofl! That's funny. When I lived in Tokyo, my neighbor's kitchen window upstairs was just across from one of my bedroom windows, which I would sometimes crack open to let the air flow through. The windows were frosted (of course!) and I used the curtains when I opened the windows. However, I would always hear a loud slide and click sound shortly after opening my window! Haha! So paranoid to be in the "super safe" country, ne?

My friend bought a house in japan recently and every window in the house floor to ceiling had same star/cracked look, so silly, you cant look out any window and he had really nice mountain views like you.

It seems everyone in Japan had the same “problem”. People in Japan must love it because every house is the same. It won’t be cheap changing out bigger windows though.

Did you use a better glass? Maybe stronger or better at insulating?

Glass was a direct thickness replacement. Nothing bigger will fit the frame unfortunately.

Nice video! Spent the past few years doing my own diy project on a regular Japanese home. Can I ask who did you order the glass from? Can't seem to find anyone online in Japan for those prices.

This is the site that I order from: www.kowa-v.jp/order.php The prices are calculated by size and thickness and they ship to anywhere in Japan. Hope that helps!

I guess it's because traditionally japanese houses didn't have windows at all because glass was not known in Japan. So probably people felt uncomfortable having big see through holes in their walls. At least that's my thought on the subject xD.

They emphasize on privacy over everything else. ''Natural light... nah, I rather privacy'' ''Great view... nah, blur it'' lol

Thanks! Yeah, the neighbors are going to find it strange I think lol They are already not used to seeing someone staring out the window when I have it open lol

Fogged windows and the insulation on them is so bad, are the bane of my existence. Is the insulation any better when you did them yourself?

The edges where the glass meets the frame seem to be a big area where heat loss happens. That rubber trim gets old and lets in cold air in. Putting silicone seal around them has improved them a lot.

The house is in the coast. Have you gone through a typhoon? Was it scary living in a kominka during extraordinary weather event?

I’ve gone through two typhoons since buying the property. Both times weren’t scary at all. The village is located in a cove so it’s protected against strong waves and currents. Maybe they weren’t strong enough to scare me lol
