Lounging There Trying , like so many Hatfield melodies, just sounds so simple and hummable.... but any musician who's tried to play their stuff will tell you it's sooooo difficult, changing key and time signatures all over the place. Great stuff.

Brilliant choice. Whenever we drove north out of London in the 70s it was great to be reminded of this great band. "Halfway between Heaven and Earth" is a beautiful track worth exploring. Richard Sinclair's vocals are wonderful and of course he later joined Camel for Raindances. He later wrote a song about difficult it was to learn to play the HATN music. I can also recommend Jonathan Coe's novel The Rotter's Club which is about a prog loving teenager growing up in Britain in the mid 70s.

Love this band. Hard to believe they only managed to release 2 studio albums. The debut is insane. Going Up To People And Tinkling is an example of their zany titles. If you want to hear Phil Miller turn up the wick play Tenemous Roads by National Health literally my favorite tone he has recorded.

The Canterbury scene is my favorite progressive rock, and Hatfield & The North my favorite band from that genre. The music appeals to me on many levels. Jazz influenced, and while the musicians pursue excellence there is an underlying sense of humor to not take things too seriously. Soft Machine "Fourth" has its moments but is not as good as "Third". You can hear the free jazz direction Elton Dean was pushing with "Fletcher's Blemish". You probably switched the music during that song :-) More Hatfield & The North! From the debut: "Lobster in Cleavage Probe" segue into "Land Crabs In Earth Takeover Bid". Beautiful singing by the Northettes.

Good to hear you purchase your stuff, versus all the "options" people take up on... Myself ? I'm so last century; I like to buy for the music, and hopefully the packaging is nice along with it. I like to delve into the ins & outs of who produced it, where it was recorded and so on. Given if I especially like the material.... Ariadne, have you listened to Argent ? I especially love that band. They're not top rank as far as progressive music goes, which I disagree with. Top rank as in Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Floyd, ect. Argent tends to get lumped in with Camel, Gentle Giant...somewhat considered "lesser", which is a shame. I'll provide 3 KZbin links for Argent. The 1st you may well know, it's their most popular. The 2nd is an album cut, but great. The 3rd is my favorite thing they did. Have patience, listen through each & I feel you'll be rewarded & like them, hopefully.... @@craigfazekas3923 Me too. I can't understand all the younger people (i.e., younger than me!) opting for download-only music. What about when the internet connection goes? What about when one is out and about in the wilds? Or, as I sometimes am, in a basement office with tons and tons of concrete and steel blocking out the signal. What to do for music then? It's almost like anyone brought up in the past 20 years just assumes the internet and its presence is an automatic given, so there's no need to have a contingency plan in place for when it isn't there. But yeah, I will always---ALWAYS---choose to buy the CD of any album, wherever possible. Sure, I then rip them to Vorbis and mp3 (for more convenient PC and iPhone playback, respectively) but this way I have a physical back-up I can return to and recover from any loss, corruption, etc. (I know, "disc rot" and all that. I have about 1200 CDs, many of them from the early 90s from when my brother was alive and heavily into music, and none of them have any signs of deteriorating. That's not to say they won't EVER but so far... fine!) I was already familiar with "Hold Your Head Up" but I suspect it was from the main refrain being used in an ad or as backing music to something else because when the keyboard solo started I was all "Whoa! This is cool! Never knew this was part of the track!" The other two were cool, too. (And both had great keyboard sections that made me happy and tingly.) For the first few minutes of "Music from the Sphere" I got a big "Lamb Lies Down in Broadway" vibe. Nothing specific but just the general feel of it. (And I noticed the track is from 74, same as Lamb, so perhaps it was something in the air at the time?) Towards the end, though, especially the last couple of minutes, I was getting something else and I am still wondering what it was, with a "on the tip of my tongue" feeling. My brain keeps wanting me to go with the final section of "Made Again" by Marillion but I don't feel happy leaving that as the answer. But anyway... thank you! Another name to add to my list!

@@AriadneJC Nice, very nice. Glad you dug it !! Know what's funny ? In Hold Your Head Up, I always though that after they sing the title ? I thought they we just singing "whoa" or whatever... Here, they are actually singing, "hold your head up, WOMAN...", not "whoa". The lyrics were meant to underscore & support women's rights & such, back in '72...HUGE hot button topic back then. Meanwhile, I was all of 4 years old....😇 In 1990, I bought Argent Anthology, a good album to start with. About 7 or 8 years ago, I picked up a box set by Epic Records that included Argent's first 5 albums in a mini-CD box. The 1st album ? Meh... the rest gets progressively better & better, for my taste, anyway. That box then set me off, I became A FAN !! Next came their live set on CD, called Encore. Then I bought a book by their drummer, Bob Henrit. Copped it off of eBay, right ? Shows up ? Here, it's an autographed copy & the seller didn't list it that way ! Strange, actually.... Btw, if you're comfortable saying, where are you at ? A region or whatever is fine, if ya want- not even neccessary.... I'm Delaware, USA. Been in the mid-Atlantic region all my life. I just like to know where folks are. I even ask phone CSRs where there at, just 'cause I like to know where I'm calling. Just called Life Alert service for me Mom; their CSRs are in Atlanta, don't ya know....😎 Check out my playlist when you have the time, it's called "Tuneage". Maybe you can pick some stuff outta there that you may like, huh ? Gotta say, your name just tickles me for some reason or other. IN A POSITIVE WAY !! I'd actually asked you before, you'd said it was tied to Greek Mythology, if memory serves.... Enjoy yer Sunday, Miss Ariadne !! 😎🇺🇸

@@craigfazekas3923 Correct! My family has little to do with Greece past or present but my mother liked the name so that's what she called me. I hated it when I was a teenager because... well... I'm sure you can guess what my peers were like because I had a name they weren't familiar with. I love it now, though, and am glad I have it. I'm from England, just outside a little city called Durham. I went to the university here for my PhD and stayed because I fell in love with the place, how old-fashioned and quaint it is (and the beautiful 930-year-old cathedral). I'll check out your playlists, for sure!

He did quite a few jobs on my house in Blean, just outside Canterbury round about 2002/3. He moved to Southern Italy not long after...he could afford it with the money i’d paid him! 🙄

Dave Stewart (on keys) had a regular monthly column in Keyboard magazine. He wrote mostly about creative inspiration, and was very informative. The name National Health came from the British Healthcare system. One member had 'National Health' stamped on his glasses, and that's what they called themselves. He went on to record a few albums with a female vocalist (Barbara someone) the most memorable song was a cover version of ''We are Siamese (if you please)' . Yes from Lady and the Tramp -- quite funny!

Wonderful stuff. Both their albums are great. The title 'The Rotters Club' was used (nicked) by the novelist Jonathan Coe for his 2001 novel, later made for BBC TV, so the name lived on. Canterbury in Excelsis! So many great things about these tracks. Pip gives "Share It" such a great drive and groove, but Richard's mild mannered intonation of the goofy lyrics are the star for me. And remember, the Canterbury scene was deeply rooted in English hippy culture, so the lyrics are a pretty much straight up request for more "sex, drugs & rock-n-roll". 😄

Wow! This is also a first time ever hearing this. I new about the Group's name decades ago and remember Hatfield and the North as a road sign on the old A1 road from London to Welwyn Garden City when Hatfield was a dangerous T junction before the Galleria (near De Havilland Aircraft Factory of the first Jet Airliner etc) was even thought about. Then my dad would turn off on the A1000 road towards St Ippolyts then Hitchin then Henlow before the A1 became the A1M Motorway to get onto country roads that were not insane. All these decades. I don't drive but every time passing think of the name of the group when passing Hatfield. All these years but honestly this is the first time I've ever listen to any of their music thanks to you. Their name makes me think of Barclay James Harvest, and thus Fairport Convention and Clannad, in one direction, and Daniel Steven Crafts, in another very different and strange direction. Could be that they were all in the twilight of my awareness, but never fully noon.

P.S. a terrific track (in my opinion) to consider for a future reaction video is the opening track (“7 Sisters”) to Pip Pyle’s 1998 solo album (“7 Year Itch”). Has all the members of Hatfield and the North (Richard Sinclair on vocals only, not bass), also has Elton Dean in the line-up. The first half of the song is like a tender and reflective jazzy ballad with a fine vocal performance from Richard Sinclair, and it gradually transitions into a glorious second part of controlled chaos, where it sounds like half of the band go off doing wild solo improvisations at once (sounds like it wouldn’t work, but it does).

I am glad you got around to this. And I happily noticed my previous comments featured in your intro. Canterbury holds the grooviest position in the prog canon, in every sense of the word. Dave Stewart absolutely kills it. In a very different direction, I am going to once again very strongly recommend that you dig into the albums The Crushed Velvet Apocalypse and Any Day Now by the band The Legendary Pink Dots. I really think you will find that this band has been missing from your life.

"Beat Club" was a German TV show that ran from September 1965 to December 1972. It had the top rock acts from all over the world playing live. Way before my time though.

By the time Hatfield & The North formed Beat Club had become Musikladen but Uschi Nerke continued to host. The show was made in Germany and unfortunately Hatfield did not appear. However, there is a brief film of a concert at The Rainbow. Beat Club is a fantastic archive.

The next band to try out is National Health. They were formed after Hatfield & the North disbanded. The band consisted of the members of Hatfield, minus Richard Sinclair. John Greaves of Henry Cow joins this band and takes Sinclair's spot. Every bid as good as Hatfield & the North.

I happened upon this whole Reaction Video phenomenon near the beginning of the COVID shenanigans and promptly climbed into several rabbit holes until I settled on three favorites: a couple of college guys looking for "bangers" with lots of "sauce" (took me a bit to plumb the depths of those enigmatic terms); a gentleman one generation behind me who was raised on rap and hip hop; and you. The first two are mostly mainstreamers, but you my friend are much more adventurous; you're willing to go into the great beyond, bringing me things I've never heard before. Some I've heard *of* but never got around to actually hearing and others that never even sailed into my little ocean. I'm sixty-two years old and never heard of Hatfield and the North (let alone the Canterbury scene) until today. And now I have something else I have to add to my Amazon wish list. Thanks a lot. i-don't-know-how-i'm-gonna-keep-up-with-all-this-stuff...

If you’re new to the Canterbury scene, you should start with Caravan. Richard Sinclair (bass and vocals on this track) was a founding member, before joining Hatfield. In the Land of Grey and Pink is their finest album, in my opinion, and a great intro to their music.

It took a couple of listens to tune my ear in to some of the harmonic shifts. I still haven't quite got what feels like out of sync rhythms among the instruments at some points, but I like it. Kind of a gentler Gentle Giant. The whole Canterbury scene has a very English emotional understatement on the surface, but with a lot actually going on underneath.

To me, the crowning achievement of the Canterbury Scene is 'Rock Bottom' by Robert Wyatt. It was the first album he released after his accident and the mood definitely reflects this. It also has an all star cast: Mike Oldfield, Fred Frith, Hugh Hopper, Richard Sinclair, Ivor Cutler and Nick Mason as producer! Has anyone suggested Henry Cow yet? Their first album (Legend or Leg End) is somewhat related to the Canterbury Scene but from the second (Unrest) on, it's all downhill avant-garde delight. For a first listen I would suggest "Half Asleep/Half Awake".

I get an Al Di Meola vibe from Phil here. Can't put a finger on it, though. If you don't know Al--go to Elegant Gypsy (1977?) or anything else into the mid 1980's.

In the last 48 hours I have heard, for the first time, five groups that were contemporary with many of the bands of my youth. Four of them I had never heard of before. and two of which I definitely like with two more that may move into the like category with more exposure. What do they have in common? I heard them here first. As a thank you, I gift you knowledge of The Weakerthans... okay they are probably too well known. How about Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, specifically 49 tonnes. B&TRK are a Canadian C&W band with a difference.

I've tried several of the the Canterbury genre. And I just don't get it. Camel is the only one close to this genre that I do like. The vocals here are not captivating for me and the instrumental parts are sometimes interesting but too much 'noodling' for my taste. I have similar problems to the jazz stuff I tried to listen to. Lack of a clear melody or something maybe? I don't know. I don't have the skills JustJP has to analyse and know why it hits or why it doesn't. What I do know, give me a Yes, Genesis, Marillion, Pendragon, Arena, IQ, Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfield song any time and it flies for me (not necessarily in that order ;-) ). And countless others of course!

Not heard them before. Musically great but I do not feel the song melody on the first song, just following the music. Or vice versa. For me it got a bit annoying. The second song only instrumental part though really really good. Jabba-dibba-dobba-jazz as my old man would have said. More of that and I’ll forget the first song 🤠

Another trip down memory lane, this time to try out a band i reaaaally wanted to like way back when, bought the album as an import. But the singer... He hits all the notes, which aren't easy to sing at all, but his voice is colourless, adds nothing. Hadn't heard this since i don't know when but some things don't change: Hatfield should have hired a singer, or just be an instrumental band (I enjoyed Lounging There Trying.)
