It's never a bad idea, but usually there's not much they can do with a cracked rib; it takes a long time, and hurts like a bastard, but it will heal.

If you'd broken a rib you'd know about it, it makes breathing uncomfortable and if you laugh or do something that really works the ribcage it's agony. More likely a tight muscle or at worst slipping rib syndrome which is caused by the cartilage moving in the lower ribs, rest and ice will generally solve it
