I would say its Smith's timing. A bit like when you putt a ball at a windmill obstacle. You putt when the hole is obstructed because by the time the ball gets there the hole will be unobstructed. Same thing with the rising walls or propellers. Also knowing the right time to dive is good and sometimes waiting for the mass of people to go first, so you can take your time, is beneficial. Oh, and you don't have to jump to dive. You can dive whenever. Even in midair which is helpful for the ring game.
