That's for doing a 'shotgun' of the drink. Turn the can upside down and stab a hole near the bottom, cover with finger. Rip open tab, chug contents. Beer, soda/pop, whatever. It'll allow the contents inside to drain out quickly since the container will fill with air from the other side. As to the fizz though, the can was probably disturbed too much (dropped, shaken). Might be ok if let alone for some time but who knows.
