I hold Hattie McDaniel as one of my favorite actors. Every movie in which she appears is a masters class in acting and she graciously, without even trying, steals every scene with her honesty in listening to other actors, reacting to their words and actions, and responding with perfection. I hope that all actors, regardless of ethnicity and cultural heritage, watch Ms. McDaniel as not just a fellow actor but as a magnificant teacher.

One of my favorite people on earth..Hattie McDaniel..sincerely a white 39 irish woman. My first vision of her in Gone with the wind. I cried along with her eyes in that scene as bonnie died in that scene with Melanie, as I watched this movie with my grandmother. Aged 9.
@Irish-Rose4 жыл бұрын
For those that do not know, Clark Gable a dear friend of Hattie’s for years, & played in different movies with her, always stuck up for her. He went to her home many times on a Sunday where she made him, & her friends a huge breakfast. In Gone With The Wind, this happened. “Gable Again Outraged By Segregation When Clark Gable found out that Hattie McDaniel and the other black stars of the film would not be allowed to go to Atlanta along with the white members of the cast, he hit the ceiling. Gable was already good friends with McDaniel prior to making the movie, and he angrily threatened to boycott the premiere unless she was allowed to attend. It was McDaniel herself who talked him into going. Clark Gable was a big enough star to undo segregation on a Hollywood movie lot, but segregation in the heart of Dixie was too much even for him.” He also got the signs taken down for Whites Only for bathrooms. He refused to do Gone With The Wind if they weren’t taken down.

@JohnGalt009 Some saw the Charlie Chan movies as redressing negative Asian stereotypes. Then again, the character was played by a white actor in yellowface.
@brachiator14 жыл бұрын
@JohnGalt009 Yep, you enjoyed the character and the plot, but the racism was still there. Hollywood refused to cast an Asian actor as Charlie Chan or the Japanese detective Mr Moto. It's not that they could not find an Asian actor. They refused to cast an Asian actor. BTW, I recently watched part of a documentary where Chinese Americans noted a very mixed reaction to watching the movies growing up. They felt insulted by Charlie Chan, but loved the sons, who were played by Asian actors and who were allowed to speak and act naturally. The sons were even more hip than there square pops, to use the vernacular of the film.
@brachiator14 жыл бұрын
@JohnGalt009 Many people forget or don't know how concessions to American racism was built into Hollywood. Anna May Wong was a legitimate movie star, but she could not be cast as the wife in "The Good Earth" opposite the male star Paul Muni because the Production Code forbid even the appearance of "miscegenation," in casting. Later, stupid producers internalized the Code even after it no longer formally existed. So, they thought that white audiences would not accept an Asian male as the lead in King Fu, even though Bruce Lee's later career proved them wrong.
@Lavender17754 жыл бұрын
She played a fucking stereotypical role that was created by Caucasians to MAKE FUN OF BLACKS IN AMERICA. There is nothing uplifting about this role. It’s an insult and stop accepting shit like this or you’ll always be given shit (because that’s what this is). Instead of being a loud mouth maid (a servants really..) why not being a princess? Oh because that’s not how Caucasians see is because they see us as animalistic and that’s why they gave her this role.
@spazmonkey6184 жыл бұрын
Cadaveria I don’t think you understand the nuance though. She dared to have a stronger presence in a time when black people were hardly seen as people. Ya it was racist but that was her obstacle to overcome? She was given an inch and took a mile and probably changed how people think - just by being her lovable shining self. Screaming ‘racism’ at a dead woman’s career is a bit shortcoming really.

@Alease Montgomery Thank you bringing that information. The story is that Ms McDaniel pushed for herself to get considered for the Oscar nomination. O’Selnick did not want to do it because there was another actress in the same film being considered. Ms McDaniel ultimately persuaded him to make the call. What followed was a huge campaign from African Americans especially her sorority to get her the award. Even her initial opposition for her taking the GWTW changed to support so that she could make history. There is more about this story (good and bad) at other websites. A comprehensive documentary on her and her relationship with Walter White is worth telling.

Hattie McDaniels came through the pre-talkie movie 🎥 era. She was a huge talent that belied her size. Her heart ❤ ♥ was what gave her the chutzpah necessary to endure and preservere in a bigoted film industry where you had to deal with unscrupulous talent agents. They got a huge cut (percentage) of the actors, musicians and singers (like Billie Holliday) these were the forefathers and mothers who paved the way for future generations to come. Hattie McDaniels was one such. The first time I saw her was in the movie 🎥 "They Died With Their Boots 👢 💀 On" (1942) as the maid (and foster aunt in all but name) to Olivia De Haviland. The film 🎥 also starred Errol Flynn as the male lead of Gen. George Armstrong Custer. Hattie's portrayal of Callie the Maid was what set the film apart from others of the period because she brought a fire 🔥 and fierce energy that made the movie 🎥 work for me!

And, often times, when she's singing a tune while acting out a scene, the singing was unsçripted, and her idea.
