Hauling Manure/Farm Boot Recommendation/1256 Broke Down!

An unexpectedly warm December means we can continue to haul manure and clean out the original dairy barn we use to house our extra cows. The 830 Case on the Minnesota Manure Spreader makes pretty quick work of the manure. We also take a few minutes to answer some viewer questions about the boots we wear on our farm. Everything old school, even hauling the tractor to the mechanic to be fixed. That's probably how that tractor was delivered new in that 1970 timeframe. IPTO gear is what let loose on it sounds like, but the good news is your TA is ok if it would still move.

I've heard manure hauling called "hauling prosperity". We try to rotate things around so the strips get manure prior to putting in a corn crop. Interesting to hear about the boot longevity. How do the foam uppers last...always wondered if it would be dicey dealing with welding sparks, etc? At least the 1256 didn't break down during the busy season. The IPTO drive gear that powers the hydraulics and pto is driven by a set of splines in the back of the clutch pressure plate. It is a fairly common occurrence on these series of IH tractors to have the splines wear thin and strip out especially if the unit is subjected to a lot of PTO work. A visual check can be made through the rectangular cover on the bottom of the clutch housing. It's a pretty simple and straightforward repair.

Was that, would you say, a fairly heavy application of fertilizer? I don't remember how heavy we spread it but if that spreader was full when we got to my Grandparents house for Xmas I knew I was gonna be standing on the floor board by the clutch on Grandpas Ford 3000, gripping that rear fender and staring back as we made a mess of the snow. I wear the Tingley workbrute pullover boots over Red Wing 8" work shoes. Wore the 17" Tingley for most of the years I Dairied. Pull ons never fit right, and were either to hot or cold, not comfy. Merry Christmas, y'all!
