A playthrough of Konami's 1988 horror-theme arcade platforming game, Haunted Castle.
Played through on the default settings.
Haunted Castle, or Akumajou Dracula as it was called in Japan, was a pseudo-adaptation of the original Castlevania for the coin-op audience. Though many of the stages are similarly themed to their NES counterparts, Haunted Castle represents a pretty dramatic overhaul of the entire experience.
And for some reason, it now includes the intro sequence from Ghosts 'n Goblins. Weird.
The stages have been shortened by quite a bit, but they are generally far harder than what the NES game posed. The enemies are often positioned perfectly to hit you into other enemies or bottomless pits, there are no health power-ups, and there are a couple of brutally hard auto-scroll segments. I really enjoyed the simplicity and the challenge of Haunted Castle, but it does take a good amount of patience to get through it. You can't just credit spam your way to the end - the game limits you to four continues before it boots you back to the beginning, regardless of how many credits are lined up.
The graphics and the sound are great by 1988 standards. Simon looks far less like a metal band reject here than he did Castlevania Chronicles, and the sprites are huge and well detailed. The levels end up feeling a bit claustrophobic because of how over-sized Simon is, but the game thankfully restrains itself from filling the screen with unavoidable obstacles (usually), so it's not generally an issue from a gameplay standpoint. The music is excellent, and is probably one of my all-time favorite Castlevania soundtracks - it was composed by Kenichi Matubara, also responsible for the music in Simon's Quest - and you can certainly hear the influence. They're tunes are all catchy, and they all make far heavier use of (relatively) high quality samples than you'd expect for a thirty year old game.
Does anyone else hear Bald Bull laughing when Dracula kidnaps Simon's woman in the intro?
It still seems odd to me that Konami wouldn't have called this Castlevania in order to capitalize on the popularity of the NES games when it was released in the US.
But overall, Haunted Castle / Castlevania Arcade / Akumajou Dracula / 悪魔城ドラキュラ / whatever else you want to call it is a super-demanding, super-fun horror platformer that marks a novel first in the lost-lasting franchise. If you're a fan of the series, this is certainly one to check out.

@Nicholas Rumleskie Yeah, that's my day job. I dunno, I'm sure that we all learn something from our influences, no matter what they are. I think whatever people learn from them is probably dependent on wha they're playing and whatever experiences of their own that they bring to them. I know that's super vague, but it's the best I've got :)

My only REAL complaint is how brutal and unforgiving the game is compared to its console counterparts. I know limiting continues was a thing back then, but one life per credit for something requiring THIS MUCH resource management and pattern memorization is borderline obscene. I don't think credit spamming would have been good for this game either. To be honest, I don't know where the balance would be, but I DO know this game needed more time in the oven and more money in the bank to have truly done the IP justice.

Ah, Haunted Castle, the only Castlevania game in existence that lets Simon Belmont fight his supernatural adversaries with not only the iconic Vampire Killer whip, but also a sword and a mace. Also, as other people have already mentioned, Simon does indeed walk like he has to go take a number two ASAP. An interesting arcade *Castlevania* that's pretty good. I wouldn't call this a masterpiece, nor would I compare it to some of the greats in the classic series, not even the original NES classic, but the great vampire-whipping leather-skirted one has certainly seen worse, I suppose. That *Dracula's* gone too far this time, kidnapping his girl and all! The Batman's a dirty playboy he is, stealing women's souls and making them his slaves and all. Then again, what is a man? It's kinda weird playing a linear Castlevania game without breakable candles in the levels (That's like having Super Mario Bros without Coin Blocks). Especially when in the first game you could upgrade the whip to maximum range in matter of seconds. The sprites here are so big, that a double sized whip would already take half the screen horizontally, which might be a reason why they had to nerf the system by adding Chain and the Sword.

I also find this game quite important historically in the Akumajou Dracula games because, even Sōgetsu no Jūjika (aka Dawn of Sorrow) re-used music from this exact game. Also, not a bad one, not really a good one, is really in some sort of limbo of whatever you like it or not, maybe is really whatever you can even play it without getting too frustrated, but I will also do credits for the music, very very impressive voices, and this is probably the only Akumajou Dracula game where you can throw "Bombs" and "Boomerangs" as sub-weapons, I'm not aware if any other allows you to do this, is also the first one where a Sword is your main weapon, alongside many things, while minimal, the concept is there and will be re-used in later games. Anyway nice playthrough, this is "K" version right? Because it doesn't look as absurd as "M"

Game feels more like it takes place after the events of Castlevania 2, rather than be an adaptation of the original game. Why? In one of the emulators I used, Dracula was just being an ass and was always spawning on me. Used a different emulator and he didn't do that. If you still haven't best dracula but want to, there is a channel called U Can Beat Video Games. He shows you the best way to beat NES games, like castlevania 1 & 2.

Because most people don't know there is multiple versions of the American version. One version is impossible to play since you die in 2-4 hits and the other is playable. Most unfortunate Americans play the impossible version when they went to arcades, and would probably remember it as a coin eating machine. Along with that, it was incredibly dumb of Konami to call this Hainted Castle, people would probably see this and think it is a bootleg of Castlevania.

If this was intended to be an arcade version of Castlevania (or Castlevania 1 was intended to be an NES version of this) then they should have the same plot. Castlevania 1 takes place in 1691, yet this opening cutscene shows Simon Belmont weaing a tuxedo, which didn't exist until the late 1800's, and features the Wedding March, written in 1842. Brilliant plot.

Got the PS2 Japanese version via one of the Oretachi Geason packs, yes, it is quite a hard game, maybe too hard for it's own good. Especially one of the US revisions, either K, or M, that is not recommended to play due to much harder it is that the other US revision, or the Japanese revisions.

M is absolutely absurd. I've learned to not play it if I dont want to throw controllers. The difficulty level imo absolutely ruins it. This is the K version. It's still hard, but it's much more manageable.
@Bloodreign1
@Bloodreign1 5 жыл бұрын
My thinking the M in the M revision has to stand for masochistic, because it takes that kind of person to want to do that particular version due to it's insane version. There's 2 Japanese revisions as well, not sure if they share the same difficulty level or not, and the one I have on PS2, not sure which Japanese revision it's based off of, but I am not good at it at all. It's still nice to have the game though, even if it's a massive kick to the balls.

Funny presentation clashing with the regular games aside, this would be a bonafide classic arcade game if certain versions didn't decide your long life bar was exactly 2 hit points. Or arbitrarily cut off your continues as if it doesn't WANT you punching quarters in. Good thing you can play any version but with infinite continues in the modern Switch port. And it's got some iconic music for the series, the final level especially becoming Julius' theme in the Sorrow games.
