You would have been in heaven in the early 1970. Old silent film stars wandered around. There was a woman dressed in a red Chinese floor length jacket, we called her the Dragon Lady because of her jacket. Mae West was still kicking just up the street. The now gone homes with original crystal chandeliers were beautiful torn down now to make room for a glass and metal monstrosity

Thanks for this tour of the grounds. In the early 1950's, mom and I drove past this house on the western slope of Laurel Canyon and all during that decade we called it the "Old Pink Mansion" and speculated about who lived there. In 1968, I was in the Log Cabin, at the northwest corner of Lookout Mountain Ave. and Laurel Canyon Blvd., further south from the Rick Rubin Mansion, while Frank Zappa was in residence. I gave a ride home to Eduardo, a denizen of the Log Cabin, and got a tour. I mainly remember the bowling alley in the basement, with small alcoves along the south side, where very stoned, beautiful young hippie girls (they seemed like 14 year old runaways) seemed to be living. Upstairs, directly off the living room with its massive stone fireplace, was Carl Franzoni's bedroom, with his multi-colored velvet tunics hanging all around the room, suspended from wooden beams, and life-sized black and white photos of a naked Carl. The whole place emitted a very creepy vibe and I was glad to get out of there. This house burned to the ground during the 1980's. Directly across Laurel Canyon, on the eastern slope, were old, terraced, stone ruins where we partied (trespassing) when I was in high school, and these were referred to as "the Houdini House." This had burned down some time in the recent past, before 1965. Even then, we heard the rumors of underground tunnels. Never have I read about Errol Flynn living in what is now the Rick Rubin mansion. Flynn lived with his first wife, Lili Damita, up at the top of Lookout Mountain Ave. in the mid-1930's, and in 1940 he built a house on Torreyson Place, just off Mulholland Blvd., at the top of Laurel Canyon, overlooking the San Fernando Valley. ((My dad was a musician and played for private parties there.) Admittedly, no one has yet written a decent book about Flynn's life and career, but the Rubin Mansion is never mentioned. In the 1930's-1960's, the Houdini ruins, Tom Mix's Log Cabin, and the "Old Pink Mansion" were all owned by Fania Pearson and rented out during this time period.

My God this is such an amazing comment. Thanks for providing history for the area, it's really cool :) Do you have any other interesting stories from that time and place?
@lemorab14 жыл бұрын
@@purplegypsylady777 Thanks for the feedback. No, I don't have any other Laurel Canyon stories from that time or any other. At the time, I had no idea that it was such a SCENE. It's only decades later, in all the memoirs, where people are telling us that it was a scene. The Canyon was a road you took, like all other canyon roads in the area, to get from the Valley into West Los Angeles or Hollywood or Beverly Hills.

Another obscure fact. Houdini also used to live for a short time (while working to become famous in his profession) in Weehawken, New Jersey on Shippen Street directly across the Hudson River from midtown Manhattan. You can see the Empire State Building and the river directly from the home. Very few people know this... I grew up there and my mother found out through two elderly women who owned the home, way back in the late 1960's on line at the bank. Wanted to share...regards, Marilyn

"The truth is the property at 2400 Laurel Canyon Blvd was never owned by Houdini. It was owned by Ralf M. Walker, who in 1915 built a Mediterranean style villa at what was then 2398 Laurel Canyon Blvd (the address became 2400 later). The house was three stories with 11 bedrooms, nine baths, a ballroom, a 15-foot stage for musicians and a ballet room big enough for 10 dancers. He also built a four bedroom guest house across the street at 2435 Laurel Canyon Blvd, and this is where Houdini comes in. Walker and Houdini were friends -- Houdini might have even invested in Walker's Laurel Canyon Land Co. -- and when the magician came to California in 1919 to film his two features for Famous Players-Lasky, The Grim Game and Terror Island, he and Bess are said to have stayed at Walker's guesthouse at 2435 Laurel Canyon Blvd."Both houses went up in flames in July 1959."

One that was in that spot i had also read that. Similar story that he and his wife lived in the guest house not actually the mansion either way the one they call the Houdini Estate really is a impressive place as they. Have it now set up for having functions at the grounds looked really nice in the video and on the website photos

Ive always been a avid reader and one of my favorite subjects to read about has always been about musicians and parts of their Ives and memories the story i read years ago about the mansion was that Houdini actually lived in the smal house accross the street i. Always thought that was the one that Led Zepplin lived in ? Or at least rented at one point either way the one you filmed at is stunning And the recording studio is now becoming legendary in the recording world as some of those that have recorded there have pretty good stories about the place ! Its pretty. Weird that you talked about the possible tunnel between there and Zappa’s house that also housed a wel known studio as well ?

There was a driveway behind big iron gates that lead up to the mansion, so groceries wasn't a problem. But the terraced gardens and all the stairs would have kept anyone in great shape if they walked it a lot. Apparently it's only a myth that Houdini lived there. He and his wife lived in a large guest house owned by the owner of this mansion, across the street. It's gone now.
