In the heart of Louisiana, nestled beneath a canopy of ancient cypress trees, lay the haunted swamp of Bayou Noir. Legend whispered of a spectral banjo player whose mournful tunes echoed through the mist-shrouded waters, luring unsuspecting souls to their doom. For generations, the locals avoided the swamp at all costs, knowing its cursed reputation all too well. But one fateful night, Jackson, a young musician with a daring spirit and a love for adventure, decided to defy the warnings and seek out the source of the eerie melodies. Armed with his trusty banjo and fueled by curiosity, Jackson ventured deep into the murky depths of Bayou Noir. The air grew thick with a sense of foreboding as he navigated through the twisting maze of waterlogged trees and tangled vines. As the moon cast an ethereal glow upon the swamp, Jackson's keen ears caught the faint strains of music drifting through the mist. Following the haunting melody, he pushed forward, his heart pounding with anticipation. Suddenly, he stumbled upon a small clearing, illuminated by the soft glow of fireflies. In the center stood an old wooden shack, its timbers weathered and worn. And there, sitting on the porch, was the spectral figure of a man, his fingers dancing across the strings of a ghostly banjo. Mesmerized by the haunting melody, Jackson approached cautiously, his banjo at the ready. The spectral musician turned to him, his eyes empty sockets filled with an otherworldly light. Without a word, the ghostly figure beckoned Jackson to join him, offering his own banjo as a gesture of camaraderie. Hesitant yet intrigued, Jackson accepted the instrument, his fingers trembling as he plucked the strings. As their duet filled the swamp with a haunting harmony, Jackson felt a strange sense of connection with the spectral musician. But as the night wore on, he began to sense a dark energy emanating from the swamp, a malevolent force that threatened to consume them both. With a sudden jolt of realization, Jackson understood the true nature of the banjo player's curse. Bound to the swamp by his own tragic fate, the ghost sought to ensnare others in his eternal lament, trapping their souls in the murky depths forever. In a desperate bid for freedom, Jackson broke away from the spectral musician, his banjo echoing with a defiant melody that shattered the oppressive silence of the swamp. With each note, he felt the dark energy recede, weakening the ghostly grip that held him captive. As the first light of dawn pierced the veil of mist, Jackson emerged from the haunted swamp, his banjo clutched tightly in his hands. Though he had escaped the clutches of Bayou Noir, the memory of its cursed melody would haunt him forever, a reminder of the dangers that lurked within the shadows of the night.

*it was strange, being home again. New Lwizyàn is the terraformed moon of a dead planet called Quintin IV. It had its cities of course, including a recreation of the famous New Orleans called La Nouvelle-Orléans. But I wasn't from there. I grew up in the bayou, among the folks just trying to make a living along the terraformed lakes and rivers of the man-made marshes. I left that life as soon as I could, went to school in Orleans, then I joined the Imperial Navy. I've been to all kinds of planets, moons, stations, asteroids, you name it. I've met alot of different people, both in the service and out of it. Never been to the Imperial Core, to Earth or Mars or any planet like that, just out in the colonies and frontier. Fought my fair share of human enemies: rebels, pirates, etc. Aliens too, the kind so strange and foreign that they make the things I saw in the bayou as a child seem tame by comparison. Now I was back, not as a visitor or someone returning home, but as someone in the service doing a job. A rebellion has broken out here, and our job is to make sure nobody gets the rebels any reinforcements and to keep the troops down below supplied. I sit in my bunk, writing in my diary, and all I can think about are the fond memories of long summer nights with my family. We'd sit around in a clearing near our cabin and Dad would play the banjo and sing songs. It was good times.*

I was surprised, in ducking under a low bough, to find myself in a circle of light from a small campfire. The fire seemed to push back the mists, making an island of calm. A man sat there on a log, plucking his banjo in a haunting song. His head was low, so that his hat blocked his face from the light of the fire. "Beg pardon, yeh know the way outta here? Mah wife is expectin' me, see, and this fog came up awful quick-" "And you got lost. It happens, don't lose your head over it." He declined to raise his head, seeming to fixate on his strange melody. "Do...do y'know how I can get back? I live off the frog ponds by the meadow." The stranger pointed to my right with a hand as steady as the Appalachian Mountains. And I knew that was the way. "Thank yeh, but the way is dark as anythin' an-" He waved his hand dismissively, and I noticed dreamily that the music kept up without his hands touching the strings. "No matter, friend. You can borrow my lantern, by that rock there." I looked down at my feet to see an oil lantern. It was worn, but clearly well taken care of. And it had not been there before. "Wha-" The stranger of the bayou seemed to nod, and I kept my question to myself. Ma always said not to question good fortune too hard, lest she leave. The worry that had gripped me of being lost in the fog the rest of my days dripped off me, and I sat there on that log for what felt like hours, listening as the song that felt the essence of the bayou weave up my spine and back down again, a song in solitude that nevertheless felt comforting. It was an ebb and flow like lapping water. It was the swaying dance of the fireflies above a stretch of dark water. It was the twinkle of stars through the cottonwood trees. The last note rang out, and I knew his song would stay with me forevermore. I turned to express my thanks to the man for his help and music, only to find him facing away from the fire, legs on the far side of the log. Somehow I hadn't heard him shift round. He seemed ready to leave at any moment, but he still looked at the ground. I shifted my feet awkwardly. "I'd best be goin' too. Must thank ya for help...by the way, whatcha say yer name was, feller?" "I didn't." The stranger stood slowly, and walked into the mist without another word, seeming to disappear as soon as he left the firelight, down to the squelch of his footsteps in the mud. And the night was still. Edit: continuity, he stood up twice at first 😅 and now he stopped playing, and there are a few more details thrown in to complete the picture!

Sounds like a passage from a book I would enjoy, like some southern Gothic comparable to Carl Hiaasen or William Gay. The music sounds like a fan of the book heard the music in his heart and put it here. Damn good stuff

@@philwhite4191 Aww thanks! I'm happy to hear you liked it so much! I'll have to check out those authors!

@@terrortalks3037 if that's your own work, very cool. Hiaasen qualifies if Southern Gothic comes in a floral print shirt and huaraches. He's a humorist for the Miami Herald with several great novels exploring the seedy underbelly of Florida to his credit. He's almost like if Elmore Leonard was hilarious. Gay is Missouri caverns, Kentucky hollows, Tennessee bogs, places to hide stills or dump bodies....much more of a classicist of the genre, perhaps he might be compared with Faulkner.

@@philwhite4191 it is my own work, I just got struck with the idea while listening and started writing! Nice, Gay sounds pretty up my alley, any particular good one to start with?

Y’all load up your piroges and head on down to Bayou Sorrel where we gon have a good ol’ fashion fais-do-do! We gon make groceries and eat dem crawfish, some boudin, maybe some gator, definitely dem cracklins….and whatever yall bringing yeah. We gon play dis song on da loudspeaker, but not too loud, cz we gotta add in the sounds of dem frogs, dem crickets, dem gator growls and maybe da call of da rougarou! Sights include da Spanish moss dancin off da branches of da Cypress Tree, the blue sky turnin to deep purple and then givin way to the magical light show of da lightnin bugs! Feel like I shouldn’t have to say this, but don’t bother showin up if you don’t got da local brews in yo piroge…..

This is the strangest and most comforting genre. However, not to be nit-picky, sometimes there is no banjo but an acoustic guitar.
