Haunted, Tunnel, Meredith, Fairmont, WV. Scary, This tunnel I was told is supposed to be haunted. Get a drink and walk with us, and see.

I have lived in Fairmont all my life and never heard that the tunnel was haunted. I used to walk it all the time back in the late 1970s when it still had tracks in it. It was built by The Monongahela Railway in 1914. There isn't much "overburden" over the tunnel, so I have often wondered if it wasn't a "cut and cover" tunnel where the concrete arch was built in a cut and then covered with earth and rock. The last train probably used it around 1977 - perhaps an engine, a caboose, and a carload of flour for the bakery or maybe something for Alcan. While the mine at Jordan was working, the engine for the switcher was kept overnights and on weekends on a short wye-spur on the Fairmont end of the tunnel. It is somewhat unusual in that it is bare concrete and not brick-lined. Even in its heyday it probably never saw more than half a dozen trains a day, and after the Merchant Street station was taken out of service circa 1970 it saw very infrequent use. Bridge piers for the old right-of-way remain at Morgantown Avenue, The Drive, Auburn Street, Intersection of Merchant / East Park / Morgantown Avenue (we STILL say "down where the underpass was), and Merchant Street.

I live within walking distance to this tunnel. I would love to use this path for exercise but I won't do it because of how poorly lit the tunnel is combined with little incaved doorways where people can hide if they wanted to. You can be attacked so easily and I can not understand why Fairmont will not fill those hidey holes in

That tunnel goes all the way to the fort and in to morgantown I think

This looks very similar to Bryson City,N.C.’s “Tunnel to Nowhere.” Another big waste of taxpayers money.
