Shipwrecks never cease to fascinate us - but some are especially captivating, be it for the story behind the sinking or the wreck's fascinating state of preservation. In this episode we'll look at six shipwrecks frozen in time and the fascinating, sometimes terrifying series of events that led to them landing on the sea floor. In this compilation episode we take a look at a series of shipwrecks, some legendary and renown and others all but forgotten; from the mighty USS Johnston to the infamous Endurance, the superb SS President Coolidge to the captivating MV World Discoverer.
Oceanliner Designs explores the design, construction, engineering and operation of history’s greatest vessels- from Titanic to Queen Mary and from the Empress of Ireland to the Lusitania. Join maritime researcher and illustrator Michael Brady as he tells the stories behind some of history's most famous ocean liners and machines!

Hi friends! While the team has been busy on an upcoming special and other videos, and I have been sick (as usual) I've also been going through applications to our recently advertised writing position, coordinating with new members of the team and bringing them aboard. To that end I've been more thinly-stretched than usual as far as production on the channel goes! This is only a temporary state of affairs but to keep momentum going I have been posting compilations of old content from the channel, repackaged for new subscribers and viewers to enjoy. Next weekend will see a resumption of 'usual programming' and a series of videos which we are sure will knock your socks off :) In the meantime please enjoy these classics!

No worries Mike! Admittedly, I was wondering what was going on with the compilations recently, but I didn’t think it was my business to ask what’s going on, and I especially didn’t think it was necessary to hurl insults and derogatory statements like some people have done, rather bizarrely, in the comments the past few times. Look forward to the upcoming content as always, my friend, Mike Brady :)

I was given the LEGO kit of the Endurance for Christmas. I built the whole thing in a single go. I too am obsessed with this amazing little ship. And yes… when I first heard the news and saw the image of her stern, “Endurance” written large… I cried.

The survivor of the Morrell, Dennis Hale, remained silent about his horrific experience until around 1990 when a therapist finally told him that he needed to speak about this which he did and it helped him greatly. He eventually published a book titled 'Sole Survivor'. Dennis passed away from cancer in 2015, now reunited with his crew mates.

You should look into more wrecks on the Great Lakes. There are a good number of wooden hulled ships that are in near perfect states of preservation on the bottom thanks to the absolutely frigid temperatures and the unique way that some of them sank. There are two that I can think of, though the ship names escape me, that sank during winter storms after being covered with ice and due to the buoyancy of the ice were kept perfectly upright as they sank, with their descent slowed again thanks to the ice, gently depositing them on the lakebed. One grain carrier was placed so gently on the bottom that the wicker baskets that the grain had been stored in are still in tact, full of hundreds of pounds of grain.

One of the things that helped Taffey 3 fight for hours was the Japanese believed that due to their small size, the destroyers were actually further away than what they were, resulting in many of their salvos going completely over the battlegroup.
@beej86
@beej86 5 күн бұрын
True. Also, since the Japanese initially thought they were engaging larger carriers and cruisers, they spent most of the engagement firing armor piercing ammunition that passed clean through the thinly armored targets without causing the devastation that HE shells would have.

Mike, is there any shot we could get a couple Great Lakes episodes? I’ve lived by the Lakes all my life, and I think it’d be great to hear you go over some of the ships. Two things about the _Morrell,_ some of the later crew members stated that parts of the hull were so rusty, you could poke a hole through it with your finger. The sole survivor, Dennis Hale, survived 38 hours in a peacoat and underwear as well.

10:35 Hello, the real controversy with the Salem Express is that many of the victims' bodies were left in the wreck. Normally, it's forbidden to enter the hull (many of the entrances have been walled off), because divers may find bodies in the cabins in particular. Recent KZbin videos, for example, show bones belonging to the unfortunate victims... Searching travelers' suitcases (and steal from them) is another big problem. Many of the victims have their families still alive, and this shows a huge lack of respect when the disaster is still recent.

Re: gathering artifacts. People have been collecting artifacts from Titanic and Lusitania for decades now, including personal items and luggage from dead passengers. So, how long does a ship need to be lying there before it's "okay" and no longer "disrespectful" to gather its artifacts?
@macgonzo
@macgonzo 6 күн бұрын
I may be wrong, but I think it depends. If it's a war grave, then it is illegal to recover anything. If it's not a war grave, then I think it depends on what the ship was carrying. There are cases where, for example, ships carrying gold bullion, etc, have been claimed for salvage by private companies, which have been disputed by the country in whose territorial waters the wreck lies. In most other cases, no one really cares. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

For those who'd like to see a bit more of her, I've got a video of my dive on her in 2017 - "SCUBA Diving Inside the Wreck of the MV Salem Express - The Titanic of the Red Sea" I'm not farming views - if you see the size of my channel and what I do with it you'll see that - I only want to help tell more of the story behind this neglected human tragedy.

Grandad saw the Majestic in action shortly after the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli: he was waiting to go ashore from the S>S> Clan McGillvary: From his letter home: "A little while later H.M.S. “TRIUMPH” and H.M.S. “MAJESTIC” took up position about 200 yards from us and the cruiser H.M.S.”BACCHANTE” about 400 yards. Well, Mr. Murray, I shall never forget being so close to warships in action again. My word! I never heard such a noise in all my life; they were firing broadsides and it seemed as if they literally shook the world. By nightfall what a sight our ship presented, wounded lying everywhere, but somehow or other I did not seem to mind now. I must have become quite callous. We worked all night (excepting my watch) doing what we could for the wounded. I’ll never forget our wounded boys. I can honestly say I never heard one groan, just “Have you got a cigarette, mate?”, or “We gave ‘em hell”, and, do you know, when my O.C. said next morning “Get your 300 rounds of ammunition and stand by to get ashore”, the thoughts of our wounded lads pulled me together and I felt I didn’t give a damn for all the Turks on the Peninsula. However we got ashore without anything worse than a few rounds of shrapnel, without losing a man. The next 3 or 4 days 50 of us were kept upon the beach unloading stores & ammunition. During this time the Turks kept up an incessant shrapnel fire upon the beach but, however, the “BACCHANTE” stood in one morning and blew the Turkish guns that had been shelling us to pieces. My word, Mr. Murray, you don’t know what we owe to the “Good old Navy”."
