You need a mouse trap , stainless steel safety wire, fishing swivel, a drill and a bit. Position the trap so that the bait end (plastic piece) of the mouse trap is in front of the trigger on the trap, secure the mouse trap using the wire, on the bait end of the mouse trap put a piece of wire so it hangs down into the trap and attach your bait to the wire , do not use any other bait in the trap only the wire that is hooked to the trap , set the mouse trap attach the wire to the brass end of the trap , and attach it to the piece that attaches to the door, this works great, nothing gets out i have caught a lot of birds and light animals with this

Thanks for your brilliant idea. I was trying to catch some young possums and they were to lite to trip the trigger. But one little tug on the bait and the mouse trap pulls the latch. Great idea. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Sir, I know this is some seven (7) years later, but I have a simple question: Are you using the smaller MOUSE traps, or are you using the larger RAT traps? Hard to tell. I am doing this set up and have the RAT variation. I'm wondering if I need to get MOUSE traps. Thank you.

I'm using a mouse trap , but i don't see why your rat trap variation will not work , please be careful of your fingers when you are setting it

@@ddlago Thank you for your responding. I just got back in from trying a mouse trap. Too small for the 1079 and 1081 larger traps. Have to go to a rat trap. Also, any idea what gauge wire you are using. I have .020 wire here and I'm hoping it will do the job. Might be too thin. I don't know.

@@brothermatthews1300 Perhaps a mouse trap trigger is to light for the bait that you are using in the larger traps , so go with a a rat trap , .020 gauge wire should be enough ,just set it to trigger hook on the 79-81 so it comes off fast , i use anti-sieze to grease the pivot points , another good trap that i use is a Tomahawk Pro Series 1010SS for larger animals

This LIVE TRAP is to catch larger animals but the original trigger on the Havahart 1078 does not make the trap door fall. Squirrels come in, eat and escape. Hooking a mouse trap on top of the cage seduces larger animals to eat the dangling food and then the mousetrap which is on top of the 1078, to trigger the trap door. The original trigger on the Havahart 1078 is too stiff and WILL. NOT trap anything especially squirrels.

This isa live trap. The animal does not get hurt or die. It gets caught and can be relocated.
