The biggest difference between "thrill" and this song is that Miku (red rose) is actually playing the guitar and not just holding it as a prop. Under Kanami's tutelage she has become quite the little rockstar. This impresses the shit out of me, having a number of my friends who play guitar and have seen their journeys.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う 💛。 This MV was filmed at a famous and old stone quarry (Ishikiri-Sanmyaku) located in Ibaraki prefecture, north of Tokyo. Kanami, the lead guitarist, was very scared when she stood near the brink of the cliff but she could defy the fear once cameras started to capture her playing scene. [source : Gekirock News]. Saiki is singing "Hunky Dory" repeatedly. It sounds to me, an aged Japanese, a kind of word play or pun. This phrase is very close to Japanese expression "Honki (本気) Dori (or Tori 撮り)" that means 「本気」= serious, earnest, sincere" and 「撮り」= filming, recording, image capturing". This is cynically suitable 😄 to what influencers do, isn't it? In the rap part Saiki is also singing "Always that one-upping contest, chit-chat chit-chat". "Chit-chat" sounds like "chicchai ちっちゃい" in Japanese. That means "tiny, trivial, frivolous, worthless etc." Miku's lyrics includes a lot of word play and Miku admitted she did it on purpose in an interview [source : Spice Oct.7] "Influencer" was played on Sep.7 at Zepp DiverCity Tokyo in Band-Maid's pre-US concert as the 13th song and that was the premiere (live debut). Just so you know, I witnessed it at the venue ヽ(^o^)丿. And it was played at Aftershock festival in Sacramento CA and at more than 10 venues during their 2022 US tour😍

I liked your analysis at the end. The answer to some of your questions: "What was the effect in the guitar solo?" A harmonizer pedal. Kanami has used it quite a bit on the latest EP, only occasionally before that. Try "from now on", an instrumental where she puts it to great use. "When did they start rapping?" There are a couple of other songs that arguably have some rap-vocals over rock instrumentation, but this is the only song to have a proper segment. They love experimenting and I think they've drawn from every major genre at some point - I guess it was hip-hop's turn. "Are they angry about the whole influencer thing?" No, I think Miku just likes researching and writing lyrics about different topics. The lyrics are satirical but from interviews I don't think there's anything personal in it.

"I definitely got, 'old man yells at clouds', type of vibe from it." Ahh, no. It's about empty clout chasers who offer nothing, but want everything in return. The kind of people on social media that start drama for attention, or go a soup kitchen, take selfies, and leave. Then they post about how they want to give back to the community. It's about people desperately seeking attention and approval by any means possible. If you like bass, then you just found one of the most bass oriented bands out there. MISA is a phenomenal player, with the best tone I've heard. There's a reason people chant her name at concerts. MISA! MISA! MISA!

I'd go back all the way to 1965 and The Kinks' Dedicated Follower Of Fashion for music coming from a neighbouring satirical space: Miku is no fool and actually thinks about the messages she's sending with her songs.

All I can say is this band explores all facets of rock music, just with a Band-Maid touch to it. Well you can't really get an understanding of who these ladies are until you get to hear more of their over 120 song catalog. Thrill is nearly 10 years old, it showed their potential, but they have grown exponentially better over the years. The Rap thing is fairly new concept for Band-Maid, they flirted with it a little maybe in Blooming, but I would conciser that more like rhythmic vocals.
@MaartenT Жыл бұрын
They don't have a lot of rap in their music although they seemingly are experimenting with things like this on their newest EP. The effect the lead guitarist (Kanami) is using nowadays, maybe a bit too much according to some people, is coming from her Eventide H9 Harmonizer pedal. As far as their outfits go, they basically wear them until they are worn and get new ones when that happens. They always are somewhat similar, although the drummer is less of a "maid" with each outfit and the main vocalist and bassist basically changed into something different from very early on. These particular ones are the newest outfits, they only started wearing them with the new EP last year, so basically when they could tour again.
@stephenriggs8177 Жыл бұрын
The maids pick a new outfit, every few years, and that's what they wear. They did an accoustic show in sand-colored dresses, but that was pretty much the only exception.
@glenkelley6799 Жыл бұрын
Nice reaction. Dress changes every couple of years (they design their own) and has evolved since the Thrill days (bassist MISA now dresses as an assassin maid and singer Saiki dresses as the head maid). They have always featured all the members so you will always will hear the bass. There is no ego in this band. Plenty of suggestions below, anyone is great> Singer Saiki has parts in a lot of their songs where she appears to be rapping, but it's really more like fast lyrics.

Band Maid doesn't play a genre, Band Maid IS a genre. Pop, punk, rock, metal, prog, sludge. They combine all of these genre into the Band Maid sound. They are unique.

@MaartenT Жыл бұрын
@@paulpetersen879 I know Moratorium. I personally wouldn't call it sludge, but it has quite a heavy riff for sure. And in the end, genres are pretty vague to begin with. I wouldn't even call most of their riffs metal while a lot of people do. I personally see them more as a pop punk/hard rock mix, with the amount of each genre from 100% on one side to 100% on the other depending on the track (but usually a mix). I would probably put most of their newer stuff closer to the pop punk camp than hard rock, but it's basically impossible to put a real label on them any more because they mix in so many tiny parts of other genres. Also, Akane's drums are certainly metal inspired, which is probably why so many people see their heavier tracks as metal. I don't think they have a lot of metal riffs personally, most of them are punk riffs but heavier or hard rock riffs. "Beauty and the beast" probably has their most metal riff. But it also depends from person to person what they hear and how they feel a track. So yeah, I can see where you are coming from even if I don't see it that way.

The way Band-Maid blends genres into very dense yet super integrated music with new guitar tones (Kanami's first run in No God, for instance); Akane's drum patterns, fills and beats which go beyond any rock drumming we've ever heard; MISA's second-lead runs and slap/pick/finger techniques; Miku's unusual second vocal work and lyrics; and Saiki's rapid-fire, powerful singing style... all has Band-Maid if not busting new trails out of their core genre, then certainly setting new trends in rock music for all rock musicians to consider and be inspired by. In short, I'd say Band-Maid is making waves by setting new playing, performance, and prolific work ethic standards that we'll see the results of for years to come. They've upped the game for all to follow! Thx, SeptaSOAREousRex!

Regarding the lyrics, I think it’s all more tongue-and-cheek poking fun at our social media world and don’t really think their complaining anymore than the pointing out of some of the absurdities we encounter with it in a general basis. And, yeah, having to deal with for the band (and no doubt in their Contracts, has got to be annoying) 🤷🏻♂️. Musically, it’s a very unique and interesting song and the more I listen to this, the other Unleash EP songs, Sense and Unseen Wold songs - they are a real step into high-end rock composition, instrumentation, and orchestration. Yes, Band-Maid's "Sound" has definitely evolved since 'Thrill'. A few rap elements have crept into their recent releases and, as always, Saiki pulls it off quite nicely. Try reacting to 'Giovanni' from their 'Unseen World' Album. 'Giovanni' stretches across metal, jazz, hard rock, rap; a true genre bender. Misa and Akane's bass and drum interlude is trippy and jazzy. Meanwhile Kanami uses a lot of pitch shifting effect. Saiki's and Miku's vocals are awesome. Find a live version and compare it to the studio recording. As always an awesome performance.

I think that some in Band-Maid would resent an influencer. These five women have been working hard for 10 YEARS to achieve what they have. No tricks, no posing or gathering *clicks*. Sweat, practice and determination. When they started, they were told what to wear and which music written by some else to play. Always maintaining the face of sweet, polite Japanese females. I personally woudn't call Bloomings vocals rap, but I can certainly see why you say that it is. I think it is a combination of the way the Japanese language works (a lot of short sounds when people are talking fast) and singing fast what makes it sound like rap to a lot of Western people, but honestly it is very close. I don't think it was intentionally done like that in Blooming (not sure though), while I do think it was meant as rap in Influencer. You can actually hear it with other Japanese bands as well when they sing fast (and not melodic/flowy). Nemophila certainly has some rap parts in some of their songs and it was clearly meant that way, but some of it just sounds like that for the same reason. It's actually fascinating how well these bands pull it off too, I can guarantee you I wouldn't be able to.

A more valid starting point would be Alone, or YOLO. Alone is their first recorded song that was all Band Maid, music, lyrics, and arrangement. Prior to Alone, including Thrill, the music was not written by the band. Yolo is actually older in time than Alone. Kanami, the lead guitar, had been working on that song before joining Band Maid. Band-maid do NOT have a totally new sound- their songs vary massively song to song! Tho an album maybe be generally more rock or more pop or more prog, there is a lot of variance in that per song still- and then the next album may go a completely different direction! Its better to think of them as experimenting under the general rock umbrella and doing whatever they like. Except the very early stuff, every album has some songs that are rocky, some more pop, some more prog, maybe some that are a bit metal or punk etc etc. Unless you've heard a good mix - say 20+ songs at least- I dont think you'd be getting a good idea of their amazing music. The main think to change over the years is they all got even BETTER musicians! Check out the recent instrumental 'From now on' if you wanna hear some of that!

"Have Band Maid developed their own sound"? Seriously? There is no band that sounds like them. At all. They may at times sound like other bands, but that's because who doesn't? But no one sounds like them. Even from years ago they had their own sound. Improving as songwriters doesn't mean that they didn't have the "chops" before. Other bands can only dream of writing songs like they do. That's because unlike other bands, it's a team effort. But it does sound like you're late to the party.
