Hi how do you get the image not to distort when filling a shape? I notice it's most obvious in the first example of the woman in between the two buildings

Right-click and open the 'format shape' within 'picture corrections' you should be able to find a section about 'crop' you can adjust the size of the picture (not adjusting its container) and also 'move' the image around within its container shape.
