Brodies' 5.5 this year, Bertuzzi's 5 this year...the cap is also going up from 82 to 87, so there's another 5M...The prudent thing to do would be to let Marner play his contract out and decide from there whether or not to extend him...If not then, as you've said...cap space ain't nothing

Bettman introduced cap in the NBA. Same with the NHL. Add the lockouts. Simple stats of playoff appearances and cup wins and you’ve stretched the goal posts (context) to suit YOUR narrative. Using the Bettman numbers 0-30 means a Canadian team is MATHEMATICALLY due to win a cup. Keyword: “Mathematically” aka “stats”. Do whatever you want with suppositions and interpretations. Personally I know Bettman is keen to make hockey more popular wherever possible.
