Except Dave isn't correct about the skill set. The rule just states that relief isn't allowed when clearly unreasonable. So you can't say "You're mid-handicapper and can't play a left handed shot from there properly, but me as a professional can". The shot is either reasonable or unreasonable. The professional may be able to play the shot better but there's no mention of that in the rules - Rule 16.1a(3). In this case, it would be reasonable to play left handed, as there is nothing preventing a reasonable left handed shot from being played if the path wasn't there. However, the NPCR would be further into the rubbish on the left hand side and you'd end up with a worse lie and stance.

I'm afraid Dave is correct. I think rule 16.1a(3)/2 would apply here ''Player May Not Use Clearly Unreasonable Stroke to Get Relief from Condition'' and I think it's fair to say that left handed stroke would have been harder than the original shot. Now if the ball had been up close to a tree it's another story. Technically it would be fair to take relief, but you know eachother well enough to know that a left handed stroke's always gonna be harder, so one could say you can never take advantage of this rule with your friends :p

Liam, if you took relief from that position you would first have to establish the point of full relief which would be further into the rubbish and not on the other side of the path. You would therefore gain no advantage from taking relief so you were correct to play as it lay. Great videos keep them coming. Paul

The view and Dave’s incredible swing makes this worth watching. Barlow being a jerk almost negates that. Try being nice to the guys on your trip it might make you happier and someone might even share the cart with you! It is painfully obvious that practice does make better golfers.
