The problem is people think BL are just gay romance and love stories. It's like saying shoujo are just highschool romance and geikomi are just all realistic portrayals of gay life by gay people. BL do actually have psychological horror and where the main leads does not necessarily have to end with each other. Most popular BL manga-ka of psychological kind is Harada. They do fucked up stuff well. Shoujo has Banana Fish and stuff like Earl Cain. Josei has Sakura Gari, etc. Japanese label their stories not accdg to genre but accdg to their market target, doesn't mean other people outside their market target can't read and enjoy it too but they are not actually considered "story genres" and they can have a variety of stories: BL, Geikomi, Yuri/GL, Shoujo Josei, Seinen, the problem is when people would recommend heavier and more shocking stuff to people who are noobs. And the most controversial ones are those that tend to reach mainstream non-BL readers due to its controversial themes.

@@jartalol31 I feel like a lot of the time it's how ppl perceive "tags" in general. Like Evangelion is considered mecha, but to me that's psychological (horror) like how some ppl consider KS """"boys love"""" while most ppl would say that it's horror. I'm glad bcs it means media (the works themselves and the audiences) nowadays are more and more diverse so that you can't really group them into big categories anymore. It's becoming less and less logical to just shove BL into "for women/joseimuke" and GL into "for men/danseimuke" categories, even though that's still how a lot of Jpn websites divide their selections.

The best 'entry point' of BL I'd say is Given. No sexual act for the first volume, full of self discovery and fluff. There are many other great series I've read in the past too, but Given is good for setting the standard. Yeah, KS is definitely not it.

To be honest, I love Killing Stalking. It's definitely not marketed as BL though like many people think. It's originally phsychological horror, and it's one of the better ones out there in my opinion. Agreed, never have I read a psychological horror where it made my heart race the way KS did and it was also one of the few stories where I couldn’t predict where it was going at first so I became hooked. It was real disappointing to see people hating on it bc it ‘romanticized’ abusive relationships, like it clearly wasn’t about romance and it’s literally showing you that from chapter 1.
@SarahJSweetheart

It's definitely a STARK warning against people who look to manipulate and control you. Obvs it's extreme/that's not what irl abuse looks like, but it DOES showcase typical manipulation tactics irl abusers use, that's why I liked it, it even helped me recognise how controlling and manipulative my ex was.

@@Hiddinnie the thing is romance and romanticization aren't linked nor the same thing. Does ks contain romance? Is it bl? YES the two main characters are in a relationship, whether that relationship is good, is obviously not the case lol. Now, is the abuse and toxicity ROMANTICIZED? Which means is it portrayed as if it were normal, a good thing or essential to the relationship? NO IT'S NOT. So ks is a psychological horror BL that tackles two deeply flawed main characters in a very dark story. The story talks about a dark romance and terrible crimes BUT it does not romanticize them. Nor the relationship the two characters have. Nonetheless it is still considered bl, even by the author. Hope this was of help

Remember to check the tags/warnings/reviews before reading! - The Warehouse (manhwa) - The 188 series (novel) - Checkmate (manhwa) - The Black Mirror (manhwa) - Most of Harada's manga - Nitro+chiral VNs (Togainu no Chi, Sweet Pool, Dramatical Murder) - At the End of the Road/What Lies at the End (manga) - Ten Count (manga) - Don't Pick Up Boyfriends from the Trash Bin (novel) - The Earth is Online (novel) - ZENO (RPG horror game; not exactly BL but might as well be) And there's tons of people who DO consume and enjoy dark stuff. i enjoyed reading KS, it was one of the first psychological horror manhwa I dared to read and one of the works that really scared me and always keep me on my toes every updates and put me in a spiral of emotions... a lot. anyways, the author really did a great job in portraying the emotions in each character, the atmosphere and dread in every panel, i thoroughly enjoyed that shit. But yes, keep in mind it's not BL, no healthy romance at all. i remember it raised some confusion when this was still on-going ('till this day) and the author had to keep reminding the readers that is not BL xD just a fucked up horror shit. a really good fucked up horror shit imo.

I fully agree killing stalking is in no way bl but psychological horror (massive spoilers ahead if you haven’t read it) I love these kind of stories about psychological horror and in my opinion killing stalking is by far one of the best I’ve ever read, it’s an amazing storyline with many different twist and turns which is exactly what im looking for in psychological horror. Killing stalking amazed me in many ways from not being able to predict what was going to happen next to Yoon-bum not being all so innocent either(as seen in chapter 1 where is shown that he is a stalker and broke into Sangwoo’s house) to the troubles of psychological issues such as potential Stockholm syndrome(from Yb’s view point seeing So in ways that can’t be understood from others because they lack in desperation) to the twist of Sangwoo’s childhood and him seeing his mom in Yoon-bum to the parts where he himself starts caring about Yoon-bum more deeply. I don’t get triggered by anything and i hardly cry when i read angst because i read angst as my main hobby but the ending here really broke me. Sangwoo dying while screaming Yoon-bum’s name in the hospital to Yoon-bum hallucinating Sangwoo on the street causing him to run into the traffic it was amazing. It was so sad and it made me bawl my eyes out but that’s exactly what I’m looking for when i read psychological horror. I have seen other comments here about being sad that people hate on the work because it “romanticises ” abuse even tho it doesn’t and i fully agree, it doesn’t romanticise it at all, everyone that has read the work should be well aware of that, the work focuses on the way the two main characters meet, live together (involuntarily) and how their relationship develops until they eventually die both their deaths having been caused by the other. A relationship doesn’t mean a romantic connection, it simply means that two characters are connected to each other in a way. Yoon-bum suffers in my opinion from Stockholm Syndrom which is a really good way of writing the story because it can actually happen in the real world. Stockholm Syndrom would explain why Yoon-bum resisting in the beginning and trying to run away to having found a connection between him and Sangwoo due to being kept there so long. By that time he doesn’t even think of running away and exposing him anymore, the slightest things that Sangwoo started allowing him to do may not be important to us but to Yoon-bum it is life changing, in that situation these tiny things feel to him like Sangwoo is treating him perfectly good. If you are interested in these type of stories I’d definitely recommend reading it you might also like “Blind play” it is pretty similar to killing stalking, by far not as good but really interesting none the less. Thank you for taking your time to read this have a good night/day.

Killing Stalking is BL. It is labelled as BL in Lezhin thus it is considered BL. People just have misconception that BL should only have healthy gay romantic stories when it always had variety, including psychological horror even if the two male leads are not meant to end up to be together or just one or two of them die. I side eye people who automatically rec KS though for BL because as much as I enjoyed the psychological horror BL that it is in first season, it's not honestly something you immediately rec to unsuspecting people? Did these people actually read it or heard of it because it is infamous and have reached some sort mainstream familiarity about it? Somehow I feel like these people just haven't read enough. It's like when people new to anime ask for recs and people looking to troll will recommend something to traumatize them. I never actually finished this BL webtoon because how quickly both the fans and its haters just annoyed me with always bringing it up.

To people saying KS is not BL please don't spread this misconception, under official publishers it is labeled BL w other tags. BL like other genres has a variety of stories/subgenres, KS is not the only one of its kind or new to that. Harada, Psyche Delico are very popular authors with BL stories in the same vein. KS is certainly pretty hardcore/tw and would not be recommended as an entry read, but please do not sanitize the genre to just fluff, sex or positive romance when authors and publishers have never treated it that way. This would also help people to not fall into reading BL with wrong assumptions. The category of BL seems better described as encompassing anything involving romantic relationships between guys, that includes toxic ones. It's only recently that there are now a lot more diverse stories with healthy relationships but frankly you still find many tropes present such as romanticizing nonconsent.

Except it’s only marketed like that so people will read it, the author has explicitly stated that while interpreting the relationship is “up to the reader” their intent was ALWAYS that it was an abusive psychological horror/thriller. Many publishing companies and such will market anything with “gay shit” in it as “BL” or “GL” because it makes more people read it. BL is supposed to be romantic, but KS is not that. While BL can of course have unhealthy stuff in it to, it’s always centrally focused on the romantic relationship or connection between two or more characters. KS is marketed as one for profits sake, but doesn’t fit the actual description, even though like you said BL can also contain stuff like angst and trauma, not just good things. I’d recommend the video essay on KZbin by James Somerton, which goes into a lot of detail about this stuff.

I know some people are gonna boo me for this take but I see a lot of misinformation so: Bl isn't meant to romanticize, bl is just that. Boys love. A love story can be horror, it can be a bad story, a bad romance (lol) bl isn't meant to talk about what an ideal romantic relationship is. Bl is just fiction, and as such, it can be about whatever! The story itself doesn't romanticize to0xic relationships and neither do the readers that say it's bl. The problem is when people are like "this is what irl romance should be" and guess what ? No one does that! I'm tired of people wanting bl to be just cutsie, slice of life stories that remove the depth and tridimensionality of what mlm and queer media CAN BE. We want slice of life fluff? WE HAVE IT! We want horror, mystery and evil main characters? WE CAN HAVE THAT TOO. Why limit ourselves??? Wanna argue? Let's take archivist's fave danmei mo dao zu shi! That novel is 70% horror and mystery and necromancy and also a critic to society and 30% romance. Following the belief that bad romance bl cannot be bl because it's more about the horror than the romance, then mdzs shouldn't be bl either. AND YET. If a story isn't to your taste, don't worry! There are countless of fluffy love stories more normal than KS 😂 I personally read it because I wanted a cool story with 2 main leads that were both bad and flawed! Just, be warned that as a psychological horror bl it does have very harsh scenes If you're looking for a realistic bl I can advise umibe no entrenger

I agree with this! BL like any other genre of fiction and media is a sandbox for exploration! Authors are allowed to write complex ugly characters and strained/painful relationships even if they aren't necessarily the best portrayal of people. Stories are stories, and sometimes those stories can be of bad people doing bad things. But that doesnt strip it of its title as a BL series. This genre doesn't have to be soft and fluffy all the time. + There are so many subgenres that can go under BL. You can have horror BL, action BL, Mystery Thriller BL, Sports BL, School Life BL. Even then, these are all still BL.

@@natchann6558 ikr? I see people in the comments being like "anyway guys here is BETTER BL" when what they mean is just, tamer more chill bl. I'm tired of this holier than thou behaviour towards horror queer media! Just because something isn't to your taste it doesn't mean it's automatically bad but it's impossible to tell some people that

Hey, just wanted to say thank you for saying this. I was starting to doubt KS was BL from these comments, but yeah it really should be considered BL since it's just a category. Killing Stalking has very clear BL scenes. I also agree with how tiring it is to see most of the comments here discussing "good BL," as if BL that explores darker content is automatically bad. Like dude, I love Sasaki to Miyano and Given, but I want some goddamn variety! I don't need wholesome and fluffy romance 24/7 because that's boring. Reading and enjoying darker content doesn't mean you'd accept it in real life either. Obviously though it shouldn't be recommended to any BL newcomers since it's intense. Also THANK YOU for bringing up Fuuchan's taste. I'm quite certain he would agree with you since he likes MXTX and 2ha and Saezuru. Hell, let's bring up Scarle who likes fictional toxic men. It sucks when people trash on "problematic BL" when it's fictional and equally, and maybe even more so, as compelling to read as fluffy romances. Sorry for ranting on your post. I just really appreciate your comment and wanted to add my thoughts.

Oh, and I might as well give more dark BL recommendations that have interesting plot. Remember to check the tags/warnings/reviews before reading! - The Warehouse (manhwa) - The 188 series (novel) - Checkmate (manhwa) - The Black Mirror (manhwa) - Most of Harada's manga - Nitro+chiral VNs (Togainu no Chi, Sweet Pool, Dramatical Murder) - At the End of the Road/What Lies at the End (manga) - Ten Count (manga) - Don't Pick Up Boyfriends from the Trash Bin (novel) - The Earth is Online (novel) And there's tons of people who DO consume and enjoy dark stuff. No need to feel bad about liking it. Just take a look at ao3 lmao

i understand the author's hesitance to not label it as BL (the same way the creator of Yuri on Ice refuses to let the anime be promoted with the BL tag as well btw) bcos a lot of ppl will see smth tagged as bl and think, oh! i don't like that bcos it's bl and so it's likely that their hesitance to tag it as BL is smth more on the lines of "this is this kind of genre story that just features mlm characters" and not "this isn't bl bcos it's supposed to be a reflection of x or y in mlm stories". bcos yoi and ks being not tagged as bl means they get promoted more in other categories unrelated to bl (sports, psychological horror). think, in the same way that some action stories aren't tagged with romance either, even if they have it heavily featured, bcos the "romance" is secondary to the main plot being told even if it is in the forefront.

KS honestly is so interesting and pretty exciting and good tho, yeah it is f*cked up if you see it in BL tag not recommended for anyone who like to romanticizing that kind of red red red flag persson and situation. but in psychological horror tag is a good recommendation. If you wanna good BL try Kieta Hatsukoi, Sasaki to Miyano, and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi. That is my best 3 favorite soft BL so far.

I agree Killing Stalking is pretty messed up. I did not read the whole thing but skipped the chapters and it got worse in the end.

I gotta tell something, its fine if you like KS, to me is one of my favorites because of the story itself, and IT IS labeled as bl by the author herself, is just that some people think that bl is just the romantic kind of story, this one is just bl AND psychological horror at the same time 🤷

I couldn't read it, way too much for me. Seriously though guys, don't think of it as BL because it's not. It's definitely physical horror and NOT a walk through the garden

I read lots of BL but KS is not BL. But people romanticise it. There is no romance there. Just lots of trauma.

Omg guys, bl not ony appears in a romance way. This just simply implies a relationship between gaymen. And killing stalking was confirmed to be a part of bl. I can understand if u say the plot fucks up, sangwoo doesnt love bum bcs he just sees him as an image of his mother. But in my own opinion, sangwoo just used to take bum as his mom's replacement, time goes and eventually sangwoo really has the feeling for bum. I can genuinely ensure that cause sangwoo tore the picture they took in the park together in order to free bum, he was affraid that bum will have to suffer the consequences if the police realizes bum is his partner in crime. And the last scene, right before the death, sangwoo keeps calling bum's name, NOT HIS MOTHER'S NAME, so i feel like finally, he can get rid of the obsession with his mom and have a real look at bum. Thats it, my perspective, btw english is not my native language so... just ingnore my spelling or grammar mistakes

I'm on fulgur dada's side about killing stalking hshshhshshs. A troll that chooses to recommend KS although we know it's a pain for the new readers lol. But yeh, for me, I'd like to recommend KS because it deserves the support and the author's hardwork. But I will never promote it as BL.

To me, killing stalking is a good manhwa but a really fucked up plot. It gives me a different feeling or emotions while I read that and I say I'm pretty satisfied with the manhwa 10/10. idk must be something wrong with me hahaha.
