Mondays video leads nicely into this one. We love reading your comments and sometimes, some of you chuck us a curve ball and really make us think!
This week it was Craig, who was wondering as we gleefully loaded our van to the brim with traveling goodies 'When did you last weigh all that?"
ummm good question, so we trotted off to the local weigh bridge hoping Redders wasnt going to have to live with just a mankini for clothes on our Christmas market trip, the croissant habit would be slammed to a halt and annual subscription for slimming world for both of us was essential!
Were we over?
were we under?
check it out!
We are Corrin and Paul and we travel Europe in our Motorhome with our two intrepid travel hounds Dolly and Pippa!
At the moment while we wait for our schengen allowance to reset we have taken a trip in the UK to uncover the costs of motorhoming in the UK.
We leave for Europe again on the 15th November

Hi, yes we have a few options to consider, the quickest is a paper exercise to add 200 kg , the next is air suspension and new tyres / wheels to add even more, the 200kg is more than enough and will pay for itself with the reduction in VED , SV tech seem pretty good 👍🙂

As someone who lives in France if you do upgrade the weigh limit don't bother with the "Angles Mort" stickers , most in France don't bother, But it's up to you at the end of the day. I think our van runs over weight when we are touring, as on the MOT here they weigh the van as part of the test.(not sure if they would fail it if over as I have never been over) So I have to empty at least 50% of the van (helps give it a good clean anyway) mostly the tools, snow chains from the storage part, empty the water tank and go with 1/4 of a tank of fuel and it's under by 60kgs every time, so I know it must be over under normal running. I think the police over here tend to leave motorhomes alone, but sometimes check them at motorway pay points (something I never use anyway) we do get the odd story on the French motorhome sites about this, I have only read two stories about been stopped and fined in 10 years living here and "yes" both were on motorway's. When we first moved to France we loaded everything we could in the van, even brought my motorbike on the rack we went to a local weigh bridge (which was free) and the weight was 4 tons we were broth shocked and have never done it again, but we had just brought our home so forgive us on that one, don't tell anyone 🙂
@redsgotravels
@redsgotravels 9 ай бұрын
Haha 🤣 we won’t tell anyone ! Yes the stickers are often talked about on sites, and although it’s weight , a van smaller but heavier than ours would need one, and we wouldn’t ( in our current situation ) .. being part of the test is a good way to declutter ! Yes , we do build up over time and never get round to it, so emptying out isn’t a bad thing, but as you mentioned when you load back up it’s easy to exceed , payloads can be a bit tight , but your secret is safe with us 😬 😂 safe travels and thanks for commenting and supporting us, very much appreciated ❤️

😂😂 yes, it was a pleasant surprise, but we do need the extra, although we don’t have to modify the van to get the extra 200 kg, it makes us complaint with any legal issues, I would imagine many are over without realising , particularly the ones who travel with passengers in the rear, ours is 4 berth, 4 adults approx 350 kg, add 100 L of water we’re at 450 kg … it really is a tight margin isn’t it ? I’m convinced many people don’t consider the weight or if they do they ignore it. We live and travel in France and there are loads of motorhomes with families and bikes etc and no angles mort sticker. There’s no way they’re under 3500kg. We chose a motorhome with a decent 565kg capacity and only 2 of us (and Westie) but I was still concerned we might be over. Took it to a weigh bridge (which was free in France 🥳) and with everything (full water, bikes etc) we are just under so it’s a good incentive to keep in shape!

Very interesting! We too are going to Germany after our cruise next week ,2 adults 2 Yorkshire terrier boyz 4500kg swift escape,so hopefully we are good to go! With all the winter clothing and bedding which we didn’t need last year on our Spain tour,but What I wanted bring to your intention’if you didn’t know’ was something I only discovered a few weeks ago about Tires and mainly only applies to Germany over winter and apparently are very strict about this! You need the winter tires with the M + S and snow flake in a mountain logo stamped on the tires, just having M + S Without this logo what most uk tires have is illegal in Germany 🇩🇪…..anyway I checked this out and it’s correct,I had my tires changed last week at kwik fit at £187 per tire…more expense but I did manage to resell mt old tires for £250 so helped keep cost down a little….when we there we are going to choose around 5 sites and hire a car in each new park up,so hopefully can discover more of Germany especially if weather very cold as I expect it will be 🥶 have you chosen any stops yet! Or have you any recommendations! We are going blind and hoping we are making the right move by doing this,thought we might start in cologne area first slowly making our way to Hamburg and towns and cities in between …..hopefully we might see you somewhere over there ,have a good trip.😉🙌😘 Andrew and David Archie and Jack

Planning to buy, we hired an Adria Matrix, which is a 4 berth, this one plated at 3500kgs, they are 3650kgs when new, and with just 2 of us, 2 x e-bikes, minimal food, 20l fresh water and no grey or cassette, we were 3720kgs! So we'll be up-plating too, we've got grandfather C1, and with reduced road tax, it'll pay for itself in a couple of years. It just maybe limits potential buyers when it comes to selling, who took their car test after 01/01/1997.

In 30 years travelling in Morocco in winter, I have met many UK Motor-homers on campsites who have never heard of the 3500kg limit. Many were driving Monsters with a UK car license. The UK licence should be upgraded to 4000kg to cover most UK Motorhomes.

@redsgotravels 9 ай бұрын
Good morning ! Yes it’s a bit of a grey area that can catch you out, motorhome manufacturers really do cut it fine , and then the up plate process is just a paper chase with no mechanical change, unless you want to add even more weight again.. not sure what the answer is, but you’re right, I wonder how many people are inadvertently driving a motorhome on the wrong category without realising ? 🙂

Driving a Vehicle over 3500kg without a Private Heavy Goods License is a criminal offence, but the worst is that you are driving uninsured. @@redsgotravels
@redsgotravels
@redsgotravels 9 ай бұрын
@robertcroft8241 depends on when you passed your test to drive a car , we are both fully entitled to drive a vehicle up to 7500 kg, having passed our test pre Jan 1997 , in addition Paul is HGV qualified after 30 years with the fire service , but anybody who has passed after the cut off date no longer has this entitlement , It’s on the uk Govt website .. The situation in the UK up until 1 January 1997 was that drivers who passed their car test also gained entitlement to drive a light lorry or van (C1 entitlement) without the need for a separate test. Those drivers retained the 'grandfather right' to continue to drive vehicles up to 8.25 tonnes. So some will have it some won’t, and as you say those that don’t won’t be legal !

We had our 2019 Bessacarr 399L plated at 3850Kg from new, that way we don’t have to worry about payload. As you say it’s strange the tax for the 3850Kg class is cheaper than the 3500Kg class. Do you think a 40Kg leeway is cutting it a bit close, you had about 25% in your water tank and you spoke about a 30Kg bike. Of course as someone pointed out to me as I put on my magnetic Angles Morts stickers at a ferry port it’s an give away of your weight if you stray into the wrong weight limit. The downside of plating your MoHo over 3500Kg is something I had this year, I turned 70 earlier in the year (I know you’re obviously nowhere near that) So now to be able to drive our MoHo and tow a trailer over 750Kg I had to keep category C1+E on my licence. This involves a medical and eyesight test, no problem, I passed the medical ok and my licence was duly issued, but I’m now going to have to do this every three years now.

Hi Charlie and thanks for commenting, yes we feel the 40kg limit is a bit close, we will up plate for sure, we will remove the back box contents ( about 50kg ) .. chairs, windbreak, table etc , as we won’t need that until next year, so do have a bit more of a buffer zone, the lower tax is great, but as you say it does add a few other factors.. 🙂👍

Earlier this year we were loaded for our France trip including 2 dogs 2 e-bikes (on a towbar mounted carrier) but no water we had the van weighed and overall we were under the 3700kg but we were 40kg over on our rear axle (2000kg) so decided to remove the bikes and go without then and while travelling through Belgium we did see the motorway police stopping and weighing vans.

Don't forget the fuel and water weight. Don't up plate unless you really have too..the hassle in Europe is a pain in the arse...go boxes, heavier fees etc. better off trying to save weight elsewhere

We did mention we had fuel and water on board, but it’s so close to the limit .. we will save on vehicle tax and gain a bit of flexibility.. ❤️ we really do need a little bit more as even tho 450 kg seems a lot , 4 adults and a full fuel tank , that’s the payload reached ! Lots to consider ❤️

@@redsgotravels were you full on fuel and water? Either way it's your decision but at least you checked...loads of Moho owners bury their heads and claim to be under 3.5t even with bikes etc swinging off the rear and a family of 4 🤣

😂 yes full on diesel only a third full on water. Totally agree, it’s been an eye opener and we are amazed at some of the sights we are seeing that are clearly over weight

Hi guys, what an interesting and useful video, we haven't given much thought to this before so are very grateful you've done this vlog. I think we'll have to double check our weight and slightly worried we've both piled on so much weight in the States that we'll be right over our limit 😂 Really great information though, lots of love to you both 💕❤

Maybe confirm your breakdown cover will be ok for the higher weight? I'm in the same situation where a decision needs to be made, staying under 3.5t is possible but only just!

Hi ! Breakdown cover is fine, it’s the length of the vehicle that trips up people, luckily we are ok 👍👍

Good video, thanks for doing this, we keep meaning to get weighed too! What do you use for breakdown cover? We're with AA just now as they cover our car and motorhome if it's less than 3.5 tonnes, so another consideration and cost, though I appreciate we're saving money on road tax 😊

Hi there and Thankyou ! We use safeguard and our breakdown is included , most trucks are ok with a little more weight , but it’s the length that can become an issue 🙂

Sitting at 3460 and as you mentioned you still had the bike. I think you need to think around your up plating decision . Going off on long trips you are going to need to carry more on board water and how much food and the like do you have on board at weight. You appear close to over weight. We are 4500, we travel throughout Europe with no real issue of additional cost re tolls. This Summer we did Austria without a Go box. Slovenia without motorways (Yes you need a box but they only work on their motorways), so didn't use them, Switzerland paid for the 10 day ticket App. So seriously consider up platting and then you have everything you need. Its not as though your are nearing 70??

Up plating is certainly going to happen… put 4 adults and fill the water tank, that’s it maxxed ! I wonder how many people actually weigh their motorhomes ? ❤️

Hi when you upgrade that means you come under commercial speed limits . Does this affect your insurance
@redsgotravels
@redsgotravels 9 ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for the question, yes It goes from plg to phg , and commercial speed limits come into play, but we tend to stick at those speeds anyway, no rush, easy going more mpg , ref the insurance, it should just be ‘noted’ as long as it’s done officially via a reputable company , but no doubt an admin fee to add the amendment 🙂👍
