That he'd leave Ukraine besides those separatist regions that wanted to either be part of Russia or independent states, if Ukraine remained a neutral state and to not join NATO. I think that's the best option. If they keep fighting, their populations will reach critical levels where birth rates would be so low that both countries may never be able to fully recover.
