Guitar and violin making always fascinated me. Back in the era that I grew up in we only had television. And I distinctly remember one program (that was aired in the late 80's) on violin making. Everything on violin making seemed sort of hush - hush then. Violin making secrets shhhh. - don't give any secrets away, which was a pity as I really considered that career direction. I suspect it would have given me great satisfaction. Nowadays so much information is available - I'm not saying people will just tell you everything, yet with so much information there your starting point I think is a lot easier.

Yes I do. Thanks for the reply. Really appreciate that. My guitar neck needs sorting out. Way back when (I bought it) there was not much technical info so for years I played with a Ibanez (12 string) with a "bent" neck. The action was also way too high from the fret - so I never bothered to learn scales. It always felt that I could not properly "push down" the second string behind the fret properly. I will list my questions in proper order. That is the back round.

Listened to your duet again this morning 2 October 2021. This song just GETS me - the way you play it. Every time. I did join facebook. So surely but slowly things are getting sorted out. My electronics workbench (previous smaller one) and workshop was really a mess - for lack of where to store put all my components and measuring equipment. Slowly but surely things are getting sorted out. But my new workbench is gettting ready. Each day I see how I can optimize my workspace. Then you can see what my world looks like. As for Facebook - I REALLY do not have selfies or photos of the surrounding Port ELizabeth area. Port ELizabeth is really quite beautifull, but I will have to actively go out and take pictures and post them. Once I have these I will post as I acquired a Smart phone - that was the Idea. I surely will ask questions pertaining to the guitar. My fingers are somewhat stagnant. THey need some excersize. Thanks again for sending me the chords. Gustav

Thank you for your reply. Probably the best thing would just be to talk or call someone that repairs guitars to get some guidance. Some guitar necks (12 strings) actually looked narrower, but again I do not have a clue. To look at a picture of a neck and judge is a difficult - for me at least.

Had a very interesting experience the previous saturday. I phoned Taylor guitars to find out about guitar necks and neck widths as it does make a marked difference for me to be able to reach certain chords. I phoned the Netherlands (or Sweden) as we fall on the same timeline. Simple! At first (Saturday) there was absolutely no answer from either countries. So I phoned the following Monday. Finally - the Netherlands answered! I actually had to explain the basic thing I wanted to know over and over. Very Odd! It was as if everybody was suddenly out "ON LUNCH" or coffee. I even asked the Dutch if i should rather converse in Afrikaans as they would be able to understand it very easily. Very strange. If I didn't know any better i would say they were expecting a phone call. Or may be I'm being paranoid. DAte Stamp today 19 October 2021.

I just noted the dimensions of the giraffe shin bone. Length 120mm x 39mm wide x 9mm thick. Weight: 95 grams. My curiosity is really this: The transfer of the string vibration through the bridge to the - lets say wood "soundplates". I do not know much about the actual sound mechanics, however I do know that sound is transmitted much much further trhough a denser material (eg: that is why sound transmits a further trhough water because the water molecules are in contact with one another.) That is why I am so curious to see what kind of a difference a denser material will make for a guitar bridge. But then I would like tested on a really good instrument. There is another phenomenon that I know well from electrical engineering that might come into play with violins and maybe guitars, that may have been overlooked. Well - in a certain sense. This is called resonance. (You can thank Nicola Tesla for that) It simply means that the sounding plate of the instrument will vibrate in sympathy with the note. The better the string vibration is amplified by the instrument, the further the note will carry. Again not that I know much about these things. I always try and brake down things into logical steps. Let me see - maybe I can coax a willing knife maker to use his tools - may just for a few hours to cut out suitable size and thickness plates from the piece of bone. Sounds of instruments really fascinate me. I can hear sound differences in instruments clearly. - GUstav

Hi Adam- Sorry to only reply back now. With regards to the neck of my guitar I just need to take a allen key and tighten it untill the neck is straight. The string action should be much better already. Then I will also just check my bridge and replace it with a handmade piece of bone. I do have giraffe shinbone here - I made some hunting knives as a hobby. The bone is extremely dense and hard. The right material. I will blame my slow reply on my electronics workbench that I had put in with help from my old time school friend friend Pierre. It's a mess and I don't like unorganized equipment and parts on it. Well I'm just going to to tighten some screws to finish my enclosure for my soldering iron temperature controller, and at least that will be done. Later I suppose get a handle on twitter. Some people I suppose handle twitter quite well, but I yet have to get a handle on it. If I make the bone - I will have to flatten the Giraffe Bone first, I can always post you a piece if you want. I found suitable piece of giraffe shinbone - if you are interested I will courier it to you at my own expense. The shaping and making would be up to you. I really do not mind making up a bridge for you - I just need the right equipment. That I do not have. The main amount of work if of course to get the two cut pieces perfectly sanded flat to the correct thickness and width. Then the bow shape - etc. You should be able to get out enough material for two guitar bridges. If I still had my beltgrinder I would do it for you - no problem. Should you require the material - just put down your postal address below. I know by law for example only already manufactured items can be sent to another country. (Bugs in wood blocks etc. coming in at airports), so I am not so sure about the bone sent by courier. But if you want the material - you are most welcome I will have it sent to you by courier at my cost. Thanks again for those guitar cords. Regards GUstav

What sort of guitar neck should I look at. My guitar is as you already know a Ibanez 12 string. The string action to the fret is not right to say the least. Other than playing my brothers 6 string I do not have a way to compare guitars. Remember here in Port Elizabeth those guitars (Taylor series) are not imported for - maybe obvious reasons. They are really expensive (but worth it) and you have to convert Dollars to Rand (South African Rand). Now you are getting REALLY pricy! $5000,00 Dollars will set you back about R70000,00 I cannot just walk over to the Music store and see how they perform or how easily they play. Can you basically just make a recommendation as to guitar type, neck and so on. I REALLY do not have this knowledge. I would be really grateful if you can help me out. And yes - I can say playing a 6 string is easy - I am not fooled. Any instrument - if you want to really good - you have to practice, practice, practice. Personally I prefer the fuller sound of a 12 string - that is why I love the instrument, but I would like to do more than just strum.

Sadly, I don't know much about guitar maintenance, especially something as significant as replacing a neck. I'd be concerned that the issue may also be a result of the guitar's body (warping or cracking, perhaps), in which case replacing the neck wouldn't change much. There are some other great options out there now, where if you can you can manage to access/import them you can get a good quality instrument for a very reasonable price. Check out Alvarez guitars, for example. Sorry I'm not very helpful with this issue!

Hi Adam - I know I have made no recent comments here, but I will update. The local Port Elizabeth "cellphone information network exchange" was quite active so I (being forced to stay at home every weekend) - BECAUSE my movements are tracked. OH - yes - they don't mess around. It is not because I do not want to make contact with people. They know WHATS UP before I do. You will be quite surprised how I am sometimes actively blocked - and i am not talking about any Internet platforms. Gustav. PS - I am and was always really interested in violin making. I always was even from high school. It was just that because South Africa was so isolated under apartheid, and remember there was no Internet available then with information at your fingertips information was harder to come by. The only real cities that you would go to to find a good concert violin or information would have either been Cape Town or Johannesburg, but not Port Elizabeth (they changed the name of Port Elizabeth now to a almost unpronounceable Khio San (Bushman) name starting with a G i think. As to why I do not play the Instrument I will share with you later - soon. I will give you the real story. You may find it quite interesting and amusing. Actually I have a "feel" for the instrument. As a musician yourself you cannot explain to people who are not musical why - you just know. However it was something I only discovered much later in my life.
