If you have heart problems you don’t go to the dentist, you go to a Cardiologist. So why do people go to an artist that specializes in let’s say portraits to ask for lettering? I never understood that.
@longasicanseethelight8224 жыл бұрын
@KeisyDiaz. Probably because people just don't do research & expect wherever they walk in to, too be able to do whatever they want, as if every shop is like a street shop. Id hazard a guess that a large portion of people seeking a tattoo are completely unaware that these artists have specialities, let alone the names of them.
@LadyBorgia4 жыл бұрын
I think it's because there's a fair amount of people who don't understand how various types of art differ and that each type of art and artist have their style and things they specialize in. They actually often don't fully get it when it comes to medicine too. I'm both a scientist and an artist who works in various different types of mediums (some vastly different from another.) I would have been a neuro or a cardio thoracic surgeon if I had not come down with severe rheumatoid arthritis on my way to becoming one. I've noticed with both medicine and art that there's a lack of research done to see who they're actually working with.

iv'e come across people on these inked videos that genuinely think that if they walk into any tattoo shop they expect to get a perfect tattoo exactly how they want it. And they don't think that bc they're uneducated, they think that because they're ignorant pricks who obviously don't have any experience with the art world and that tattoos can just be copied and pasted onto skin no matter the tattoo or tattoo artist.

Know that if you are getting tattooed you'll probably be spending no less than $100 on average for something small, with $100+ being a fairly normal hourly rate. Find an artist you like, discus ideas, size, placement, and if you want to go ahead with it ask for a price range. I've never had an artist give me a price and expect me to immediately be able to shell out for a tattoo (though they may ask for a deposit to reserve your spot), they understand if you need to put it off for a bit before you can afford it. @rodrigoandrade2564 жыл бұрын
Wrong placement can be something VERY subtle that makes A LOT of difference. For example, if you want a portrait on the upper part of your arm, if the piece is just a little bit higher than it should, it will mess up the whole design (You can end-up with a grandma picture with a HUGE forehead, for example). It also has to do with the natural curves and flow of your body, that can make an otherwise great tattoo become weird to look at just because of a wrong angle. And about right artist is just research the style the artist do. Don't go to a black and grey specialist asking for an watercolor fish, or to a old school specialist asking for a realistic portrait

I think preventative Steps are best, advice I heard once is when you pick a tattoo artist, look at their work and think about if you would be happy with any tattoo they've done previously on you. Obviously not a hard and fast rule but it's a good way to think about it- if you like a majority of their art and how they place it it's less likely you'll have any issues by the time you get there
@HJ-si7hd4 жыл бұрын
Most custom tattoos require a consultation beforehand where you discuss what you want, where you want it, size, and your budget. If possible it's always best to do this in person so the artist can see your body and let you know right away if they think something won't work well. But if you don't like what they come up with on the day of, just speak up! They want you to be happy with their work, so don't feel that you have to say "yeah that's fine" if it isn't.
@mottyreef4 жыл бұрын
I learned about placement with tribal tattoos because they always follow the flow of the body, have the curves and "straight lines" of the body part, and fill up an entire part to look complete. More complex art is the same in the sense all the lines and curves and size fit the body.

When I went in for my first tattoo, I knew I wanted a Phoenix. Since that is the name of my city, I had seen come cool phoenix tatts. I had some ideas but my artist was basically like, "that's not how tattoo's work" in a tone that suggested that I was some kind of lame tourist getting tatted at 42. I told him I was an artist, too, that I had worn black for 27 years and wanted color on me, how I moved to Phoenix on 9-11-2001 from New York and lost someone in the towers, how my parents house burned down when she was pregs with me, and how I loved birds. Plus, about what size and placement. An artist can let an artist work. Just do it, and I will pay what it costs. When he saw I was serious, so was he. I don't think the stencil was his drawing, but I did not watch him as he worked. When he told me to look, I was so excited. he went at least twice the size, and quite different placement, from my hip to my armpit, with the wings and flames sweeping towards my back. My idea sucked, this was awesome. He tattooed it while I was breathing, or in the times I held my breath; I could hear him holding his breath in concentration, I could feel what he was putting into this work, in the placement he chose. the phoenix's belly is at the edge of my ribs--it breathes when I do. no natural movement I do will distort the bird to look wonky, but as I do move, the feathers and flames move as the skin is pulled across my back ribs. (I'm skinny). There is nothing special about a phoenix tattoo, the shop has a great vibe, but neither it, or the artist are famous. I wanted an awesome tattoo that I thought might need a unicorn scull, or a scarecrow version of myself burning in an antique cart, but my artist did not think that was awesome. I was like, can you still do it awesome? he said yes. He did a better job than he had to because it was his art, his project, not mine. He took something standard and made it extraordinary. Trust the artist if you want it to be art. .

Tattoos aren't just priced arbitrarily. It takes about 5 minutes to do the research required to understand pricing and almost every artist charges around the same hourly rate. The question should be "what's your typical hourly rate and how many hours/sessions would something like this take?" Even then, if you're getting a large piece you should be prepared to be flexible. Every client is different so it's a little silly to think of pricing in super concrete terms.

I don’t understand why tattoo artists get so Annoyed at people asking for a price. I am poor and I need to know if this tattoo is going to bankrupt me before I get it. Literally any other artist will give you a quote for a commission if you ask them to do a painting mural etc.

@Rainart5204 жыл бұрын
You can do this politely by telling them you want to book them in advance (several months to a year), mentioning that you’re saving up (always save for a 20% tip), then ask a rough estimate about a vague tattoo; and example would be say black and grey to fit a half sleeve. Don’t go into any other detail but that. That way, you don’t seem like you’re price shopping for the cheapest, but are actually doing research on the artist. I’ve done this and the artist was so patient with me, I was able to get it after six months
@inked4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they aren't talking about people who are trying to respectfully find out the price range. The artists are talking about the countless folks who DM, "How much sleev?"

When I was younger I wanted all my tattoos to be really meaningful and significant and all that lame shit. I quickly discovered that I HATED explaining the significance to people. It felt painfully cringe every time. Also, predictably, I discovered that those meaningful things weren't as meaningful to me anymore. Then I started focusing on getting *quality artwork.* and I'm way more satisfied with my ink now. It's way more fun to enjoy good art than muddle through unpacking the semiotics of your ink. Good art is gonna be good art forever. Also, Kelly, I'll have you know that virtually all my tattoos were inspired by gazing into a witch's eye.

Why would asking price be an issue? Dont you want to know how much it would be before you get a tattoo? It's kinda a super important part of getting a tattoo.
@axolotllan4 жыл бұрын
I think its a case of asking price before properly looking over the person's work asking them if they are available/capable of the kind of piece you are looking at getting. The reason I think alot of them like the idea of e-mail requests is it allows the person to specify what body part/subject matter they are looking at which can allow an artist to assess time and effort and calculate cost and even look over references the client may provide as to what they want. If they work anything like any other 'custom' style work field they wanna quote appropriately but there is likely wiggle room in rates. At comic conventions artists doing custom pieces for fans often have different commission rates for different mediums * ink/pencil/colour * and for whether it is a full body pose or headshot or multiple characters and some will even have a list of characters they will do without reference provided for a lesser charge. Thing is most of these artists want you to have looked into them and their work and what they do and get an idea of their prices before your come up with your request.

I definitely made the mistake of having so many thoughts and details I wanted to put into one piece, and also having a specific style in mind that my artist never could've achieved a satisfying result for me. In the end, I "distilled" the essence of the idea I had in my head, and my artist created an awesome sleeve. Always trust your artist. If you cannot do that, you'll have to find another one. Or just don't get tattoos.

8:58 That's some solid advice. I really wanted to start getting tattooed at 18 but couldn't get enough money for it. Waited until 26 and I'm extremely happy that I waited. I would, at 18, been right on the tail end of tribals in my town and would 100% have gotten a whole mess of too much black. Oh, and I would absolutely have drawn them myself and been super precious and, well, 18 about it.

I don’t know why asking for price is such a big deal. A lot of people like to budget for their future tattoo. Having a rough estimate for the tattoo you want can help you gauge how much you should save, and really force you to think about what you want on your body. Cost is always going to be a big factor in whether or not a person gets a tattoo. It’s not a factor that is easy to ignore unless you have spare money.

I have designed my own tattoo twice before, and loved both of them. but i also brought the idea to the artist, asked their genuine opinion of the idea, and listened to the tattoo artists advice. my second tattoo i got a bit bigger then i wanted because the artist said it would last longer that way. I also have a degree in graphic design and have been an artist myself for 8 years. So like, i know art. for my next tattoo though, im letting my artist design it entirely for me, i gave her the idea and placement (half wreath of blackberries, below the knee) and she is doing the design work, and im thrilled to see the result next month when i go in to get it done! Bottom line; listen to the artist. they know what theyre talking about.

As someone, who worked in an eyeglass apparel store as an optician and a salesperson, I totally... totally... TOTALLY... understand why the "How much?" right off bat is annoying. In my old line of work, that question was always given the answer of "Depends on what you want". You never gave a definite price right off bat, because you could end up doing a $500 job for $150/$200. And that's because you told a client that you'll provide a service for a cheaper price without consulting with them. Now, when it comes to tattoos, I think it's safe to say that a potential client should save up to $1,500, just in case. With a saved-up $1,500, you'll might be close to having the right amount for a custom job. Or, you might be surprised by learning that your desired piece is lesser than that amount.

I think that for a while - not as much nowadays - the idea that your tattoo has to have a meaning was widespread and people want to justify themselves by adding meaning to stuff that don’t need it. It can just be a cool piece of art on your body, it doesn’t need to be deep!
@Bananacustardcostuming3 жыл бұрын
I disagree about asking about price. I’m a self employed artist myself, so if I’m getting inked, it’s a luxury I’m saving up for. If my tattooist says “that’ll be £500” then I know how much to save up. Sometimes the sessions are shorter and easier for me to budget for. Not all of us have bottomless income and you should encourage people to budget and be realistic about what they can afford and when.
@joanfergusonsgirl47744 жыл бұрын
Pricing doesn’t matter when you find the right artist who’s style you like and are after for your piece to be done by. I’d only be asking about a price purely so i know what amount of money to have saved (for those of us who need to save our asses off) and that would be if after the artist still hasn’t given me an estimated pricing after I’ve made my booking paid my deposit and given them my ideas for my piece. I don’t care how much it’s going to cost, I’m just happy with a ball park of what to bring. Personally if an artist tells me around $1000 for example, I’ll bring double that just to be on the safe side 🤷🏽♀️

I just recently got my first semi-big color piece. Me and one of my best friends wanted to get BFF tats, but I wanted to get something that didn't necessarily look identical just with the same theme. So we both agreed on Alien heads with a Galaxy inside. Just the simple generic silhouette. We gave the artists freedom to do what they wanted with that preface and we both got amazing work done because of it. Moral of the story is if you let an artist have creative decision it usually turns out amazing and people comment you on your weird ass alien galaxy tattoo all the time.
@elizabethcrossley68534 жыл бұрын
yep i let my artists have creative free reign... i say... i want such and such on such and such a body part... in YOUR style and i like the vibe of these pieces you have done... da da da... it allows them to feel comfortable and i chose that person for their vibe and their art so why wouldnt i let them create.

For some people, price is a real concern because you just don't get the opportunity to save much. Some people are paycheck-to-paycheck. It isn't always about being cheap, it's about seeing what your options are because you are limited financially. If your "shop minimum" is greater than their budget, just let them know so they can spend elsewhere or continue to save.

3:00 I've actually had the other way around experience when I was going from shops to shops in my town to get my first tattoo... I entered a shop, asking to see the portfolios of the different artists working there, to see if the style fitted what I was looking for, and immediatly, this guy (the owner of the shop I guess?) just blatantly asks we "what is it you want?". So I answer, explain the plan, the size, where I want it, that it's my first tattoo, and then he just tells me "Ok, that's gonna be €350"... So, being young, inexperienced, and a tad too nice, I smiled, said, "Ok thank you very much! Can I have your card to see what you usually do?" and got out of there. Needless to say, I ditched the card in the nearest bin the moment I was out, and trust me, that bin wasn't far from the shop... XD In the end, I got my first tattoo somewhere else, and I don't regret it one bit, and i've had many afterwards. Artists, run away from clients who immediatly ask about the price, but clients, run away just as fast from "artists" who only want your money, and don't think about your wellbeing... ^^ Lotsaluv!!!

What is a good, non-judgy way to inquire about price or to work your budget into the design process? Most people do have a budget of how much they can spend for a piece, but I wouldn’t want to make an artist feel like they cost too much.
@sleepy-peepy4 жыл бұрын
When you're emailing an artist after you share your idea you can literally just say "I have a budget of about $______" and they will tell you if they can do it for that cost or not. They just need information about the idea before they can make an estimate. Don't overthink it.
