The thing about the Y2K Bug is that it WAS an issue that could have absolutely borked a LOT of things. So computer programmers worked for years leading up to January 1st to correct the computational issues that would have caused global computer crashes. So when nothing happened the narrative became that it was NEVER an issue instead of one we cut off at the pass.

People panicked over it but even in areas where minimal to nothing was done about it the errors encountered were minimal to non-existent. So while it's speculated that it had the potential to crash things it can also be argued that it wasn't going to crash systems. There's arguments to be made in both directions. But to say nothing at all happened is not true. There were certain systems in certain companies around the world that experienced errors at the turn to 2000 including bus machines, bank machines, and other services.

To clarify for those confused by Sean's tangent: the 'Y2K bug' was a programming glitch that stemmed from an ill-advised shortcut that went into the development of most of the major OSs in use in the '90s -- to save space in the code, the system clocks were often coded to omit the first two digits of the year, incrementing from '98' to '99'... but they weren't all told what to do after '99'. In fairness, the issue likely wouldn't have been _as_ catastrophic as the media suggested at the time -- indeed, there was a degree of Y2K end-times hysteria that I remember -- but a cascade of unhandled exceptions in operating systems across the globe would've been _chaotic_ at a minimum, and for those of you too young to remember that time period, chaos was the _last_ thing we needed. That nothing really _happened_ when the clocks rolled over to 1/1/00 was due in large part to the efforts of the programmers and systems engineers who knew the problem was there and worked diligently through the late '90s to develop and implement a fix for the issue -- a truly Herculean task when you consider that it wasn't as simple as putting out a patch that anyone could download over Wi-fi over the span of a coffee break. The moral of the story? _Be polite to programmers -- they make it possible to watch the funny Irishman play horror games on the KZbins._
@QuantumWaltz2 жыл бұрын
I was a computer programmer's kid in the 90s, and basically the only thing I remember about the Y2K bug is my dad's continuous "oh, ffs people" attitude about it. I mean, people really thought we'd revert to the stone age instead of something more realistic like the time just before computers were widespread - AKA, the time my parents were in _college._
@LordEpoa2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I was coming to the comment section to say just this. It WAS going to be a problem, but it was identified ahead of time and taken care of before any issues could occur. That seems to be a recurring theme with humanity. Bad thing didn't happen, therefore it wasn't gonna happen despite the effort put in by millions of people to stop it.
@VixeyTeh2 жыл бұрын
I remember. I was studying IT at the time. Sure the world wouldn't come to an end exactly but key systems such as banks, air traffic schedules and hospitals that relied on up to date information to support human lives could have gone horribly wrong. Exactly as you explained, thankfully a lot of programmers and system engineers were working very hard to update all the systems to avoid the chaos and catastrophe. Particularly with the planes and hospitals. Thankfully IT people make viewing this possible.

4:30 Y2K was an actual computer bug that would have had actually bad consequences that was only averted due to thousands of computer programmers working millions of hours, costing billions of dollars to fix it. Just because nothing happened at 1/1/2000 doesn't mean the threat wasn't real. I mean, there were some people who went WAY overboard with their predictions of doom and gloom, like building whole bomb shelters with a decade of canned food and supplies because they believed it was going to be the end of the world, but it was an actual issue that took a lot of manpower to fix and prevent.

A small little detail I'm sure some people missed: when Jack enters the room with the mannequins and the circle of candles, time goes backwards and when he leaves it time goes back to normal Edit: it appears to have been an edit thing so just ignore me and continue on with your day. Thank you.
@StarWarsNerd14652 жыл бұрын
How’d you notice that?
@StarrChild.2 жыл бұрын
I have a feeling that was an editing thing. There was a cut before Jack walked into the room so it's probably just him playing it on a different day or time. As when he goes back out of the room, the time doesn't jump forward to where he was last, it just carries on as normal.

To answer your question, yes, the thumbnail did in fact intrigue me and make me want to check out the video. I doubt I would have felt so intrigued if it would have been the standard “shocked face reacting to game bad guy” type of thumbnail.

I am LOVING the horror content. I've noticed I have a hard time watching other Tuber's doing "Let's Play" content, because I appreciate your pacing when playing games versus others. You're thorough without being tedious, showing us all there is to see. You read conversations aloud when needed, providing character and giving life to the text on screen. Most games, you come prepared with stories of lore and pertinent info on the subject matter that we as the audience couldn't access ourselves. And your play style is very similar to my own, so it is most pleasing to sit back and vicariously experience a play-through of the many games I can only dream of affording. I'm certain MANY of us here feel the same as I do. Anyway, congrats on 28 subscribers! Some day, you'll hit 100. I believe in you!

16:00 I was expecting the moon to actually be an eye. It looked like the black circle part in the center was like the pupil, and the red around it was the eye color. I was expecting it to blink and that it would be like a demonic moon entity that the cult was worshipping. Regardless, that was an interesting game, and the video was fun to watch!

Hey Jack! One reason why many horror games have incredibly high sensitivity might be because of how they are programmed, they might have made their game work best on their setups (maybe they have a lower DPI mouse), so it feels normal for some, but too high or low for others.

4:08 to anyone like me who wasn't alive then, and doesn't know why Y2K was seen as a problem: It was because when the year was to roll from 1999 to 2000, computers would display dates as xx/xx/00. And due to the way dates were stored on some machines, the fear was computers would think the year went from 1999 to 1900, causing glitches and stuff.
@z-beeblebrox2 жыл бұрын
To get an idea how bad of a disaster it could've been: lots of live databases actively running on servers rely on chronological dating as their sort method - for example, the stock market. If instead of the year switching from 1999 to 2000, it went 1999 to 1900, any computer-aided stock trade made in the new year (a significant majority of them, even back then) would be treated as the oldest trades in the database instead of the newest. So the entire digitized stock market would stop updating indefinitely and current trades would be lost to the archives, failing to shift prices despite new stocks being bought and sold. While the chances of ever going into 2000 blindly unaware of this problem and failing to fixt it were extremely low, if we had, it would've been a financial disaster worse than 2008 by orders of magnitude.

Maybe you know--I was talking to my bf about the game being a good representation of '97-'98, except for the sheer amount of pcs. We were lucky to have one per classroom--it was more likely that we had them in the library for public use instead of computer labs. Was the number of pcs accurate, in your opinion, or no?

Sean also skimming when he reads due to ADHD is highkey like, relatable, but also, holy shit I didn't realize that was an ADHD thing- basically taking in as much core info as you can without reading it specifically, and then just context clues and piecing it together. Sometimes my brain gets funky when I have to read actual sentences, especially in large swaths of text, and I'll either lose track of which line I was one like multiple times over and lose it each time I start again, or I'll sorta, like, my eyes just unfocus against my will, just glaze over, and I forget all of the sentences I was just reading like some sort of Eldritch being reached into my head and plucked out the knowledge.

your thumbnails have actually been my favorites for the longest time! i like how they focus on a character in the game w the title of the game in the back. i remember loving the resi 7 ones; resi 8, tlou2, undertale & subnautica ones are really good too - you do them a for a lot of series and i think they’re beautiful :)) however someone once said that the yt algorithm prefers it if a face were in the image too(?), like an :O reaction type. but for found footage/vhs games, you can definitely take advantage of the mystery factor with red circles and arrows. i forgot what was the second question but i guess this paragraph is enough
