As a beginner, I don’t have a lot of pastels and unfortunately made some wrong choices and find the pastels hard to use. I bought a set of Sennelier and love them. I since then have been picking up sample sets. One of which is the blue earth and I remember touching them after opening the box and thinking they feel like butter. Thank you Karen.

i enjoyed watching your video and your videos in general too! Your very talented and a dedicated Artist. Thanks for the reviews and tutorials featuring such diverse topics! I did comment on budget brands getting more exposure and showing us how you would use them. Sennelier is not a budget brand in my opinion, just saying I think there are more pastels that might be a good choice beside Schmincke or other go to's. Wonderful rendition of the Emerald Isle!
@brendamorgado5624 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen I love all your demos they are so informative , and I like your so causal ways of your videos .My question is about the hard stick pastels you use . I have a set of the Nupastels and the Faber Castell sets Are there any other sets that would be good to have on hand ? I also soft pastel sets . . , unison, Terry Lugwig I have always mainly done portraits with my pastels but I am trying to learn about how to do landscapes . Thank you so much for all you teach us .hugs stay safe
@KarenMargulis4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brenda! I use Nupastels for the hard sticks. Holbein makes similar square pastels but they can't be used with an alcohol wash so I stick to Nupastels or Polychoromos.

merci Karen.. formidable pastel.... quelle gomme utilisez vous? merci
@andrearhoda28025 жыл бұрын
Your interpretation was much more interesting than the reference photo! It is easy to see why they call Ireland the Emerald Isle!!! When you paint your skies, do you whisper at first, before you blend with the insulation? I seem to fill the tooth so quickly when I blend......but I'm not using Uart paper and real soft pastel. I'm using Canson and Rembrandt.
@KarenMargulis5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! The sanded paper does give more tooth to layer. I did blend in the fist layer then added the softer pastels

Karen, I'm wondering how you feel about the softness/experience of the Blue Earth pastels after working with them for awhile? They are on sale right now at Dakota and I'm thinking of getting them to have in my pochade box (with room to add some other colors/brands of my own choice).
@ElizabethBattle2 жыл бұрын

Love this demo, Karen. Did I hear you right? Did you say that the Blue Earth pastels are softer than Terry Ludwig pastels? I'm on the hunt for a nice soft, buttery pastel . I wanted to purchase Terry Ludwig, but the price is not in my budget.
@KarenMargulis4 жыл бұрын
To me they are a bit softer but they are also smaller! Dakota has Terry Ludwig sets for $272 for 60 and the Blue Earth 84 for $269 so they are not all that different in price. Something to consider!
@reneekroyer51044 жыл бұрын
@@KarenMargulis Thanks Karen. I see what you mean. I found the Blue Earth Nomad set at dickblick for $185 but now I'm not sure which one to get. Seems to me it is more economical to get the TL set for $272 but I loved the colors of the nomad set. Hmmmm, decisions, decisions. I wish I had a money tree in my back yard, too! lol Between the paper cost and the pastel cost, my wallet is moaning, especially as I'm retired and relying on stock market investments to live on. Oh boy. But that is another story/issue. lol

This is fabulous. I prefer very soft pastels, although they tend to be quite expensive. So far my favourite is the Koh-i-noor Extra Soft - they're gorgeous and not at all gritty, but they only do a set of 48. I have to say, too, that I love the tones of this landscape as they appear on the video thumbnail. Why do cameras/computers change colours so much?! 😊

@josephineherrera85082 жыл бұрын
I loved this, Karen. So you used warm and reddish colors as underpainting for green. But what if your photo is of the red rocks in Sedona!? What colors would one use for underpainting?
@KarenMargulis2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! There are really no rules when it comes to underpainting colors! Every choice does impact the painting though so a lot of practice with different underpainting colors will allow you to make more intuitive choices. For red rock I might use bold warm colors to enhance the reds but that is not the only choice.
@josieb.herrera47702 жыл бұрын
@@KarenMargulis thank you, Karen. So I’m glad that I tried to do just that. It seems to be working, so far.
@kirkwilliams49422 жыл бұрын
Just curious why you don't set your underpainting with alcohol?
@KarenMargulis2 жыл бұрын
I do use an alcohol wash often but sometimes I do a dry wash when I don't want to wait for anything to dry.
