I’m disabled. I say I’m disabled. Other people in my family are disabled. They say disabled. It’s not a “dirty word” or “bad” it’s just a fact. (Molly Burke has several videos and interviews about this exact topic. 10/10 would recommend)

Our preferred terminology is people with diverse abilities (always people first or person centric, followed by their diagnosis or ability). Person with autism, person with Down’s syndrome, person with mobility challenges etc. Love that you’re asking! There are so many different preferences out there, never hurts to ask what people are happy with. Good on you!

Rachel, you can buy Irish butter at your local supermarket!! The brand is KerryGold, and they also make some delicious cheese too called Dubliner. You can see the difference in its coloring because it’s more yellow that typical American butter, looks like the color of margarine, and in its taste because it’s sweeter and more creamy. There’s a real discernible difference. You’re welcome ♥️🤣

I follow a pescatarian diet for the same reasons. I’m also disabled and truly don’t worry so much about the actual words you use. I had to change the way I viewed terms we use when my family moved from Chicago to Indiana when I was a kid because in some rural parts here the term cripple is still commonly used. Most of the time people mean no harm. These terms were just what they heard growing up. What bothered me more as a teen/young adult was how so many people were hesitant to come up to me because they were afraid of using a term that society has deemed unacceptable. There is nothing wrong with being curious and asking questions - that’s how we learn as human beings! It’s ok if you want to be “socially correct” and use the more common “safe” words. We as a society need to get away from judging each other for the terms we use and focus more on our intentions.
@otismilo3699 Жыл бұрын
Usually people who dont have the issue make the rules on what is socially acceptable for those with the issue. Ie people who arent disabled say we shouldnt use the word disabled because it offends the people with disabilities. Those who are disabled literally dont care about the word.

Disabled person here. Both terms you both used are fine, but so is disabled (my preference) But PLEASE don’t use “differently abled” the consensus is it’s extremely patronising. I also hate “handicapped” but I’m from the UK it’s not said at all here My sons teacher tried correcting the whole classroom to use this term “differently abled” and he was so uncomfortable , he hadn’t heard the term before and thought it was patronising too, but didn’t want to speak for me: he now has full permission of course. Obviously I don’t speak for everyone in the disabled community. Some may not care. But my observations are a lot of us dislike the term “differently abled”
