Having a gastroscopy in hospital - Patient information

Just had this done today, it wasn't even bad I was sedated and don't even remember or felt anything. Just woke up and it was over. Just have a sore throats and little bloating. Don't be nervous it's easy under sedation

Lucky! I got it done 2 1/2 years ago with neither sedation or spray - just nothing. Gonna get it done again, looking forward 🤙

This is done so differently here in the states. You are put into a medical gown and you have to take sedation.

Been twice there. The beginning of the procedure - as they slide the scope down to stomach - is the challenging part. After that they start pulling it off slowly to the esophagus and it becomes easier to handle.

why is it so big like a hose and not alot smaller nowdays ?

Mostly due to the fact, that the endoscope has work channels where the doctor inserts different tools (like injection needles). There are slimmer endoscopes, such as the nasogastroscopes, but they are not cheap, and other than it being a little slimmer, it has a much more limited use than the standard gastroscope.

I had this last year without sedation. Worst thing ever, had a panic attack before they went in, was horrifying.

not gonna lie it's a very unpleasant procedure, luckily it only lasts 5-10 minutes. although i chose to only get the throat spray, the intravenous sedative may not even work properly if youre overly tense prior. Plus there's more downtime after the procedure. Yes, you will gag, wretch and belch repeatedly. fasting beforehand is vital, at least 6 hours no food no liquid either. the doctor was right though. he urged me to try and relax and focus on breathing through the nose. after the first 5 minutes it did get easier and I got more used to the scope. had slight stomach ache and a sore throat for a few hours after but the relatively quick recovery time was the main reason I chose not to go for the sedative. was given the all clear anyway by the doctors so really was glad to have it done in the end for peace of mind.

Raphael Lynne what are you talking about. You can easily do this with just the throat spray as ling as you're relatively healthy. I cam understand an elderly person opting for sedation though..

Raphael I'm assuming you're in the US where heavy sedation is the norm for endoscopies? I had one done a year ago here in the U.K with no sedation at all. Only the throat spray - unlike the lucky chap in this video. Even tho this is definitely not something I'd want done regularly, it really is fine as long as you concentrate on your breathing. I had a biopsy done at the same time and you feel nothing. Afterwards I was up and out pretty much immediately. I felt quite gassy for some time but that was all. For me, it was a useful test which did find some significant gastric issues which I am now treated for.

I had this the nurse had 4 ml of sedation doctor said no use 3 ml woke up halfway threw doctors listen to your nurses

I had mine done the 27 th of september . I was so stressed about it, I lost my appetit and sleep , but let me tell you , it's really easy peasy . I only got a sore throat for 2 days and that's it ! Good luck .
