What a great idea to teach the kids to gear up and gear down. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

Theoretically could you just endlessly do this until you reached light speed and beyond?
@hydroworld-soontobemigrate61603 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not (Well, at least not with LEGO gears). Remember, speed and torque (turning force) are inversely proportional. That means that the more you increase speed, the more you decrease the output turning force. This also means that the more you gear up, the less weight you are able to rotate. That's why many gearboxes focus on increasing the output turning force at the cost of speed, so that they have enough power to rotate heavier objects. This is especially important for wheeled vehicles, whose rotating parts (the wheels) are consistently in contact with ground. This contact creates more friction that the motor must overcome in order to move the vehicle. The EV3 Medium Motor only has so much torque, you can only gear up so many times before the friction becomes too great for the motor to overcome. That's when it begins to stall, or even break if it tries too hard. So unless you want to risk your motors, I would highly recommend never attempting to do that.

You need infinite energy to make something with mass move at the speed of light, let alone how much force you would need to turn the first gear or how much force a Lego gear can handle

Could I do that on 45444 kit?
