I'm liking these *M5Dial* devices. I can see many projects with them I just hope that they offer other colors for the ring and body. Or at least, perhaps, a method and files for a person to 3D print their own so as to match whatever color a project might be. Orange is nice, but may not be suitable for everyone.

Great video and helpful information. I tried the WatchESPI example (clock shown in video) and was disappointed to find that such a cool looking project was missing the last 1% of functionality and the displayed time was hardcoded to the display rather than updating to display the actual time... Though that did make me learn how to modify the code to make the 'clock' work as expected - maybe that's a subtle hint to learn for yourself lol? Either way, thanks for the video and sharing your knowledge!

If you want to cut a hole into plastic I find those drill attachments with circular sawtooth cutting edge do the job nicely, but use a piece of wood to mount it on as you drill, and cut it slowly on a drill stand. ABS plastic is a nice material to cut in this way.

This is yet another AMAZING video. I just wish that they were in stock so I don't have to wait. 🙂 You really make me think hard about the nature of UI. I have been hearing lately that car owners are getting sick of touch-screen displays and want the old-fashioned control knobs back as they are much easier to use. A device like this seems perfect for certain types of applications

@@VolosProjects, I have some bad news to report. I got my new device about a week ago but it's defective. I've been working with the folks at M5Dial and they've been helpful. It seems that I have bad touchscreen and some other strange behavior. To fully convince myself that the problem wasn't just a buggy demo app, I loaded your timer app from this video. My device doesn't respond to any screen touches at all but will sometimes beep like I pressed the screen. Anyway, I've asked the manufacturer for a replacement / refund. Hopefully I hear from them again soon. That being said, I haven't give up hope yet. This device is really a pretty amazing piece of engineering that I hope I can get working. I can see a lot of possible applications for this kind of integrated display. I REALLY want this to work out 🙂

Any idea why your sketches would be showing up mirrored on the screen....? The watch sketch is fine, but the piano and timers for some reason end up fully functional, but their display (though not touchscreen interaction zones) is mirrored.

I love your "Watch" display, but the github entry has very little information as to how to load it via Arduino IDE, I was kind of expecting a sketch to copy, but there appears to be some dependencies too.

How about using one of these as a safe combination input device, with an Arduino inside the safe to check the combination. It could be much better than commercial solutions. The Arduino could send a seed and then the dial could sign the result and send that back making replay attacks impossible. There would need to be a little thought put into this, but I can see that this would be an attractive option.

I built an electronic door lock for my house that works just like that, except with at 12 digit keypad. I didn't implement the digital signature feature though, as inspection of the signal path wires for a skimmer is trivial, and the likelihood of a thief designing, installing, monitoring, and then returning to utilize a signal skimmer is highly unlikely, and would also show up pretty glaringly on the security cameras.

Can you show how you could power this with a battery pack or something similar other than using the USB-C? I'd like to make it so this could be carried around or set on a desk similar to how you used the plastic case in this video. I just don't know what type of battery and connector to use. Thanks!
